Servers are coming up [updated x3] {WoW}

Oct 13th 2010 4:25AM @Toddo

You don't pay for 24/7 access, maintenance time is covered in the arrangement, and Blizzard use far less time than the agreement permits them to. So you get free game time.

15 Minutes of Fame: Nardi on WoW culture and art, part 2 {WoW}

Aug 25th 2010 8:37AM Whilst there's some truth to that I think it misses an important point, which is that the art of computer games (if it exists) should be distinct from the art in computer games.

The obvious visual art you speak of should not be overlooked, but it is not unique to video games, 3-dimensional visual environments are created in films as well and often to a much higher aesthetic standard than is practical in video games. That's not to say that those environments aren't art, but that they are not identical with video games.

You could compare the distinction to a film shot in an art gallery. There is art in the film, but there is also art that is the film which is something distinct involving considerations which are different from those in the art of the gallery.

What is unique to video games is interaction. There is the beauty of the created world, but there is also the relationship that that world enters into with the player, and I think that is what should be criticised if you want to determine whether or not video games can be art, rather than merely contain it.

Jun 24th 2010 2:40PM There's a good lead:

What aspects of WoW are improved by massive lag?

Other than that only thing I can think of is being able to use a mount in unmountable areas. I've occasionally managed to hand in the daily fishing q and leave dal without being dismounted.

Jun 24th 2010 2:33PM Interestingly (for HHG fans anyway) 6x9 does actually yield the answer '42' in base 13 (though obviously '42' isn't the same as forty-two, and being originally a radio series you can't really work it).

I think there's a quote from Douglas Adams along the lines of:

'I might be sad, but I don't make jokes in base 13'

Jun 24th 2010 2:19PM Also - with any judgement on Alex' comment aside - I think the problem is that, as Alex said, there are nothing but Cata questions atm. If you read this site, you already know everything (more or less) to be known about Cata that is currently known to the staff and not under NDA. So the task has become one of trying to find those unanswerable questions to which you can compose a vaguely amusing answer.

I didn't think the response was terribly funny, but I'm not sure why people seem to be so upset about it.

Jun 24th 2010 2:11PM @Al I don't think that's really fair. Only NA really gets covered on here, for the obvious reason that most of the content is not regional in any way, and when it is almost all the writers here are from NA so it's as you'd expect.

EU gets a bit of coverage - due to having all the world firsts and simply being a very large region with a lot of players which increases the chances of producing players/guilds of note.

China gets a bit of mention purely because of the politics.

Oceania and south east asia (apart from China), just happen to be relatively small WoW regions without much in the way of top class representation, which is understandable given the size of said regions. I seriously doubt that it's anything 'personal', just common sense.

Breakfast Topic: I fell asleep at Majordomo Executus {WoW}

May 24th 2010 9:52AM More than once I've made myself a macro on the fly with an alt modifier in it. I use f1 - f4 for encounter specific macros, so obviously i would bind it to f4 eventually.

Drama Mamas: See ya around, buddy {WoW}

May 21st 2010 9:19AM I'm a retard friend:

I can get on with people extremely well for years and years and then more or less completely lose touch because I've moved house or something.

Some people I think are just like this. It's not that I don't care about people or really enjoy their company, but rather that I'm quite a solitary person and find going out of my way to keep up regular communication to be somewhat stressful. This used to really irritate me, but now I just accept it. Other people know I'm like this, and I try to make it clear, and on the whole things work out pretty well. I have brilliant friends who I can not talk to for literally years and then bump into and take up again where we left off.

My friends don't take it personally if I go into seclusion for a couple of months, because I make it clear that that's what I'm like. I'm a bastard and I like my space.

Also, my Fallout Boy album is far superior to Mr Belt's Mamma Mia soundtrack.

Breakfast Topic: Design a unique healing spell {WoW}

Apr 9th 2010 8:45AM Prayer of Wiping:

Draws all but 3% health from a friendly target, heals the caster to full health and causes them to fade from combat for 30 seconds or until out of combat, making them untargetable, but unable to cast.

Circle of Wiping:

Draws all but 3% health from all raid/party members, heals the caster to full health and causes them to fade from combat for 30 seconds or until out of combat, making them untargetable, but unable to cast.

Lesson of Wiping:

Removes one bladder infection from a friendly female target.
