Official forum changes, real life names to be displayed {WoW}

Jul 6th 2010 1:53PM @Ishammel

Perhaps you're that lucky, but personally, when I google my name, my LinkedIn account is the first hit, followed by some game credit pages, followed by some posts on gamasutra where I used my real name, and then a lot of posts linked to me regarding some previous employers. When you get to other people with my last name, the only time my first name also shows up is in some older family history type websites with dates in the 1800s.

Now I'm lucky enough that I'm a game developer and my employer doesn't care if I'm posting on a forum during my work day or not, but if I were locked into a real 9-5 (I have been before so I know what it's like) I would definitely not appreciate my employer being able to see if I've been doing stuff "on company time/equipment" (even if from a practical standpoint they don't enforce the policy, the ability for them to find that kind of thing out is annoying).

However, since I am a game developer (and an MMO one at that), it may be all too easy for me to make comments (either negatively or positively) that a future employer won't like or thinks was a stupid thing for me to post. They should have no power to pull that kind of thing up. Quite frankly, this change will keep me from ever posting on the forums again. (Of course I post extremely rarely as-is, but still.)

Breakfast Topic: We need more WoW lolcats {WoW}

Jun 18th 2010 11:28AM Titusx:

The British scientist Richard Dawkins coined the word "meme" in The Selfish Gene (1976) as a concept for discussion of evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. Examples of memes given in the book included melodies, catch-phrases, beliefs (notably religious beliefs), clothing fashion, and the technology of building arches.

The term Internet meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with "cream") is used to describe a concept that spreads swiftly via the Internet. The term is a reference to the concept of memes, although this concept refers to a much broader category of cultural information.

Totem Talk: Restoration talents and glyphs {WoW}

Feb 26th 2010 2:46AM @Wugan: The default UI already tracks my totems, weapons buffs, and self shields. It's just the floating Earth Shield I need to track.

Feb 25th 2010 6:58PM How about addons to use for a Resto shaman? Personally I would really like an addon that tracks my Earth Shield for me so I'm not constantly checking the tank's buffs.

Patch 3.3.3 PTR: Cull Stratholme faster than ever before {WoW}

Feb 19th 2010 7:12PM So what's up with the Deserter debuff? How do you get it? I remember getting it once the first day the Dungeon Finder was released when I used the dropped group, but I have yet to see it since then, and I've used the "Leave Party" portrait option plenty of times to bail on groups that suck. I thought maybe they'd gotten rid of the debuff or something, since I never get it, so I wonder how you actually get it...

Maybe I shouldn't be saying anything, heh.

WoW.com Giveaway: World of Warcraft Programming, 2nd Ed {WoW}

The Queue: Fantastic! {WoW}

Jan 4th 2010 4:15PM I have an amusing same person story. I ran Pit of Saron and before the end I asked if anyone wanted to continue on to the Halls of Reflection, only one guy responded with "no". The group disbanded (no one had said "yes" either) so I queued for HoR on my own and wound up in a group with the guy that said "no". I found it amusing but decided against commenting to him and he didn't say anything either.
