Bingo. The last and only game I preordered, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, of because of the Ocarina of Time: Master Quest that it got me. Bring out more stuff like it and the Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin box o' swag, and I'll start preordering.

That's the trick of this BS: Upselling & cross-selling only work if the consumer sheep think it's worth it. For example, I was a register monkey for at a truck stop. The pull of upselling there was "saving" money, using 2 for $(2*x), 1 for x+y formula. Gamestop's trying to use fear (game will stop working, we won't get enough in, etc) to motivate consumers - from what I've seen, greed (cheaper prices, swag) is much more effective.

Princess Daisy is the oe you're thinking of from Super Mario Land - she was a one-shot until Mario Golf 64 came out.

As for Toadstool, she was always referred to as Princess Peach in Japan - her name was initially changed in the US to Princess Toadstool in the US to help associte her with the Mushroom Kingdom, but her full name was revealed as Princess Peach Toadstool in Super Mario 64. Since then, Peach has been used in both the US and Japan.
