It's just standards that people expect. Because WoW has a coloring system people are used to they should implement something along those lines. AoC did this when it came out.

Their weapons are mostly inspired from Ratchet and Clank which is an interesting combination and world to pull weapons from. I think they mentioned it in one of their older podcasts while working on Resistance 2.
