So, If you were 20 yards away, you get nothing. 15 yards away, you get 125 life per second. Right next to the healer, get 500 life per second.
The "25" number could go up with a glyph or a talent, of course, as could the "10."

All of those things you list sound like the absolute pits. I don't have fun doing "social" things that are really just reasons to throw money away, especially those that result in intoxication and acting like a jerk. I'd far rather invite some friends over to play cards, go hiking with my community outdoor club, spend time coaching youth sports, set up a Habitat for Humanity day, or countless other things like that that aren't centered around blatant consumerism.
Guess there's something wrong with me. Good to know.

Those things aren't reasons to leave a group. They're reasons to have a chat with the player and point out what they're doing wrong and, most importantly, WHY. Most players don't read sites like WoW.com and are mostly trying to figure it out on their own.
A reason to leave a group is when someone is doing those things, you point out the problem, and then they go berserk, shouting insults in chat and then doing things even worse.
Even then, you should vote to kick them instead of just leaving yourself. If you leave, it comes off as you being a jerk. If they're kicked, at least they get the memo that they were the problem.

Prior to the addition of Toughness, I would have agreed with you. However, the Stamina addition that mining gives you is incredibly helpful and can often give you the edge you need. I've been very happy since switching to gathering-based professions and enjoying the bonuses they provide.
