Apr 4th 2012 5:02PM Technical question for the Q regarding multiboxing. I've had two acccounts playing on my computer for a long time (dual screens ftw) and have never had a problem running both accounts at fullres/effects in windowed mode. I recently took advantage of the Scroll of Ressurection and now have 3 accounts. Suddenly when going from 2 to 3 accounts everything falls apart. I go from 50-60 fps to 1-2 fps. However, when I pop one of the accounts into full screen mode everything is fine again. WTH?
A few technical details you may need: 4 core AMD 1090T processor, Win 7 64 bit, 64 GB RAM, dual Radeon 7850 1GB cards...all the above overclocked/watercooled (though I undid the overclocking as a test...didn't fix). I'm guessing it is a software issue I don't know about rather than a hardware one. I just don't get the huge impact going from 2-3 accounts has, and why running 1 in full screen suddenly fixes everything (well...it fixes framerate but makes it more annoying to play that way).
Any tech gurus out there than can shed some light on this?
Apr 4th 2012 12:50PM A couple Qs:
Does guild levelling happen at the same rate in Pandaria? By that I mean is it the same proportion of exp gained from quests, and is the guild exp gained from killing dungeon bosses in guild groups going up in the new dungeons compared to the old ones as well. If the guild exp needed to level isn't increased, and we're getting a bunch from completing the level 86-90 quests (as an addendum, how much exp does a level 85/86 Panda quest give?), it would make levelling a guild much easier in Pandaria and I won't have to worry about trying to get my casual guild to level so much before Pandaria hits. Oh, and no new guild levels is still the latest word, right?
Any changes in how spell power scales with intellect now that it doesn't affect mana? For heirlooms and other levelling gear, is it better to go with the +int or the +sp versions of enchants (specifically thinking of the +22int/+30sp heirloom weapon enchants)?
Apr 3rd 2012 8:49PM @clundgren:
The argument that women make less than men for the same job is actually a complete misuse of statistics. Virtually all commonly quoted studies carried out ignore hours worked/week (men do more on average), and years of experience (men have more on average). Even worse are studies that make completely unfair comparisons by grouping jobs according to completely arbitrary educational requirements (one study actually said that someone with a 4 year arts degree should expect to make as much as someone with a 4 year engineering degree /boggle).
I sat on the board of directors for our provinces PEng association and we recently did a province wide study on earnings compared across pretty much every possible demographic. Women on average had annualized earnings 22% less than men of an equivalent age in an equivalent industry. I'm sure you'd take that as ZOMG SEXISM. However, when we made a comparison of average hourly wages between men and women of equivalent years of experience rather than age, men made 6% less than women. Let me repeat that: MEN MADE LESS THAN WOMEN. It's all about how you present the data. I really wish I could supply a link, but the information has not been made public yet:(
Also, here's a fact for you that I'm pretty sure you won't believe: men are victims of physical spousal abuse far more than women. The only reasons that you are probaby rolling your eyes in disbelief at what I said is that a) men almost never report abuse, and b) how men and women define abuse is completely different. A study was done that simply asked "Have you ever been a victim of physical abuse in a relationship" and "Have you ever committed physical abuse in a relationship". Not surprisingly, the number of women reporting being abused was far more than men, and admitting to being the abuser way lower. The unique thing about this study is that they didn't just stop there. They then went on to ask more specific questions. "Have you ever slapped a partner in a moment of passion." "Have you ever thrown an object at a partner." "Have you ever dumped a drink on somone." When you actually specifically list out things that could be considered abuse, the exact opposite was found. Men were far more often the victims than the perpetrators.
Apr 3rd 2012 6:45PM Just wanted to second Dragonlordged comment on what is sexy on men vs what is sexy on women.
I'm a guy who's spent a fair amount of time on dating sites (ZOMG TROLL BAIT) and Dragon is 110% correct. Put an attractive woman in a bikini instead of a suit and her views/messages skyrocket. With men it's the exact opposite. I'm a guy who (I tried to think of a way not to come off arrogant saying this, but just couldn't) has worked out several hours a week for years and it definitely shows, but got a far better response (as in from messages trickling in at a rate of a few a week to a dozen per day on a slow day) when I took down my "showing off shirtless" pics and went with a form fitting sweater/shirt and jeans/pants combos. The majority of women out there just don't want to see the guys half naked.
TLDR Skimpy clothes on women, but not on men isn't sexist....it's giving what the majority of both sexes want. (someone link the Sienfield show episode dealing with sexy good vs sexy bad)
Apr 3rd 2012 5:22PM I disgree completely with this article not because of what it says, but how it says it.
Firstly, as others here have commented, I roll all female toons (honestly never thought about why...just something I've done since before MMOs existed...RPed females in MUDs) and in the decades I've been gaming I've had maybe 3 or 4 sexist comments come my way. Everyone on the "ZOMG SEXISM EVERYWHERE" bandwagon then rushes in to say that anecdotal evidence means nothing. Experiences differ. True enough. But then why is the entire article based on anecdotal evidence acceptable. You can't just blithely dismiss someone else's anecdotal evidence if that is all you have to go on yourself. Show me a reputable survey with a large enough sample size to be statistically significant saying that sexist is prelevant in the game and I'll change my tune.
Secondly, you act like there's no equivalent "creepy" quest/NPC text/dialogue that is directed at male players. Have you not interacted with some of the Goblin female NPCs? Did you never talk to that Orc female that was going to take you whether you wanted her to or not?
Lastly, are you trying to tell me that women can't be sexist? Completely anecdotal evidence I know (as I addressed earlier), but I've actually experienced more female PC sexism in game than male. About a dozen variations of being told men always think with the wrong head, jokes about being "Bobbitted" back in the day (seriously...how did that ever become something socially acceptable...how would a woman react to hearing a joke where the punchline was getting her genitals cut off), and receiving a lecture from a raid full of women in a supposedly "family friendly" guild run that men can never be as good parents is women (this one hurt the most considering I was a single parent raising my daughter alone at the time).
Apr 2nd 2012 2:32PM To everyone writing the "throw the mooching bum out" comments: they have "adult children". Think about how old the couple probably is. He's likely retired, not being a bum. The wife is quite possibly not "propping up the family", but simply younger than her husband and still of working age. There are reasons to scold him, but his being lazy most likely not one of them. (lots of likely/possibly/probably's in there, but if you look at the demographics, probabilites are a man remarrying a women with adult kids is 55+...a quick back of the envolope calculation puts the over/under age at 63)
One other comment I have. Is it just me, or does every single Drama Mamas article ever written boil down to the fact that people don't talk to eachother enough? If Shannon is feeling so left out, why hasn't she discussed this with her husband and asked for a little more "us time"? That's the logical first step. You never get what you don't ask for. (that sounds harsher than I mean it to be...I'm not blaming Shannon, most people are reluctant to talk about these things...just a general and unfortunate observation that applies to most people)
Mar 9th 2012 5:12PM Yeah. You and your damn Bentley making us look bad. You should've been happy with the Rolls Royce I got stuck with.
I'm sorry, but warriors complaining that their block isn't as OP as a paladin's just makes me think of a spoiled housewife complaining how terrible her life is with the (in her mind)substandard maid service she is receiving.
Mar 9th 2012 1:43PM LONG TIME SUBSCRIBERS NEVER EVER GOT ANYTHING GOOD!!!!!
Well....except for the Onyxia Whelpling....and the baby blizzard bear...and the unhatched Mr Chilly. Oh...and I guess maybe I should include the Collectors Edition pets I have to....zergling...panda cub...mini Diablo...mini Thor...netherwhelp...frosty's collar. Also, I'm sure there are a good dozen (probably waaaaay more) awesome items I have in my bank that no one can get anymore. I should actually look through all my alts to see what awesome things I've forgotten about.
YEAH. BUT FORGET ALL THAT WE GOT NOTHIN!!!!!!!! RAGE!!!!!!!!
Seriously though, I understand some people being mildly annoyed by the erceived lack of rewards for long time membership, but some people are just blowing this all out of proportion.
Mar 8th 2012 3:15PM Sorry, this video is unavailable in your location.
Youtube link possible? Some other way for us poor Canucks to see?
Mar 7th 2012 5:28PM Ilmyrn: You forgot the "in PVP situations" part. Turn the power on in BGs/areana, and turn it off in dungeons/raids. World PVP is more uncertain....turn on when flagged?
