Mar 30th 2012 2:06PM I've always hated 'toon' too. My characters are not a cartoon. They do not dissolve when splashed with Dip, nor do they distort in bizarre and unusual ways when upset or disturbed. (I'm pretty sure Dip would just drip harmlessly off my monitor anyway unless you like...dropped it into a barrel of the stuff.)
I still don't use the term although it no longer makes me twitch when other people do. I tend to use 'alts' (I have so many characters, including like 7 85s now that I don't even HAVE a real 'main') or possibly 'chars'.
Mar 12th 2012 3:52PM Female player.
I hate healing. It wasn't until Cata that I even rolled a 'healer' (priest) (I started in Vanilla), spent like one or two dungeons trying it, screamed, and respecced shadow.
It's not my thing. I am not the nurturing sort. Protective, sure, I tank sometimes. But my one true calling is smashing the bad guy as hard as I can. And I'm good at it, too.
My problem is less the stigma of 'heals lol' than it is 'you have boobs so obviously you can't DPS'. I have no idea where this idea came from... after all, the only difference between me and some dude is an item of anatomy you shouldn't be hitting your buttons with. I mean... sure, if that's your thing, but it makes your keyboard sticky and you better have your keybinds in a clump if you know what I mean.
Jan 29th 2012 4:06PM There's another form of 'godmoding' that wasn't mentioned in the original article, and that's the major lore-character type. You know, the Arthas' sister's only son, or TIrion Fordring's brother, or the lost heir to the Wrynn throne, or...
Now, I actually don't mind if people want to connect themselves to extant characters in the game, like the old ex-Silver Hand paladin that remembers fighting under Alexandros Mograine, or what have you. But being his personal squire or heir or whatever is not okay. If you really REALLY want to be related to a lore figure, pick someone like the Redpaths (who at least prior to Cata, were an apparently EXTREMELY prolific family) or the blacksmith in Darkshire or someone that -doesn't- direct the future of nations. It's still an RP hook, and no one will scream at you for getting the lore wrong if you make something up.
The other people that cheese me off are the 'Fake Classes'. You rolled a death knight. YOU ARE A DEATH KNIGHT. Not a 'dark shaman' or a 'fel paladin', or whatever the hell fancy snowflake handful of words you invented. Death. Knight. They're the worst offenders, but I see it with all sorts of other classes. Am I going to throw a fit if someone wants to call a warlock a 'nethermancer' and never RPs with their demons out because ICly they can't summon them? No. That's still in the same theme of the class they chose, and doesn't break lore. A death knight might list themselves as a necromancer, that's okay too. But just saying 'I rolled a warrior but I'm actually a fel paladin battle mage warlock-shaman' is obnoxious and will make me never RP with you. And mock you to my friends.
Jan 28th 2012 5:33PM I'm not particularly fond of dumb names (I can't help remembering that guy from Penny Arcade: "I AM CHAIR. SON OF LAVA-LAMP." I am also always amazed at how many people try to integrate racial epithets and reference to poon in their names (this must happen a lot more on pvp servers if my experience in pugs is typical).
But sometimes I'll let it slide. There used to be a dwarf hunter on WRA named String. All of his pets were named things like 'Silly', 'Cheese', or 'Theory'. I thought it was cute; sadly I think he's stopped playing.
Jan 28th 2012 5:25PM Um... lrn2sarcasm?
As the person above me noted... I was being snarky.
Jan 28th 2012 12:48PM TXT-kiddies. GOD I hate txt-kiddies. Nevermind 'rouges'... 'Ur' is an ancient city in Mesopotamia, not an article of speech. Single letters are only valid if the letter is 'a', not 'r' or 'y'. Christ. And they think it's ALL RIGHT, and get pissy if you correct them, as if Blizzard charges them five dollars per letter typed. This is why our educational system is suffering, the English language is dying, blah blah... grumble. I just want to reach through the screen, smack them upside the head, and tell them to lrn2write. Anyone that relies on txt-speak immediately becomes an immature, incompetent 12-year old in my mind. Because obviously, that's their education level.
The other thing that pulls my crank are speed-instancers. I just got a character to 80 last night. Almost no Cata gear yet, bare minimum greens. Everyone in the group is in the same condition in BRC except the tank, who's 85 and geared for some reason. Tank goes charging through the instance, flatly ignoring mechanics, not waiting for anyone, including the healer, pulling all sorts of incidental damage that results in other members dying (and of COURSE he doesn't wait for the healer to re-rez them). I see speed-tanks in vanilla instances too; people who think heirlooms = immortality. These are apparently people that have never played a tank in their life but charge through blindly anyway, losing mobs like a stoner sheds dandruff, pulling bosses while 3/4 of the prior trash pulls are still up. Similar but just as annoying are the 'Go Guy' dps, screaming for the tank to pull the entire instance at once, or healers squeaking 'pull lots lol' and then flatly failing to keep up with the tank's resulting idiocy.
Jan 26th 2012 3:27PM I just remember Wowcrendor's "Go Guy"... The one who stands behind the tank trying to talk screaming 'GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!' incessantly.
I ALWAYS get the Go Guy. If I'm a DPS, then it's the tank, running ahead and chain pulling everything without waiting for the previous pull to even die, and then screaming and pissing at the healer when they're having trouble keeping up (and not waiting long enough to let them rez the inevitable deaths that result when the tank is three pulls ahead of where the DPS is desperately trying to handle what they've left up). If I'm the tank, it's the DPS, pulling for me, pulling BADLY, and then getting butthurt when I let them die. (I don't save DPS if they're stupid. Ever. You pull it, you tank it.) Except for the asshat hunters and rogues that pull, then threatdrop, and get the healer killed. They're even worse. (And my main is a hunter, even, and I HATE the complete 100% stone clad morons that I see playing my class. >:| )
I like to CC as a hunter. 90% of the time, it gets broken within three seconds of me dropping it. Usually by the tank, but fairly often by DPS that don't understand the concept of 'hit what the tank is hitting'. After my traps get broken twice by idiots, I stop dropping them.
I hate to say it, though, for all that tanks are really scarce this expac, I think all of the good ones don't pug because of how awful the pugs are, so all you get are the self-entitled asshat who thinks they're immortal and can do no wrong even if they're still in half greens, or the guy who specced into it to get a shorter queue and free goodies and has no idea what to do and is undoubtedly wearing the wrong gear (or ungemmed gear, or...)
In lowbie dungeons, you see all KINDS of stupid, like Fury tanks, Elem healers, and... I kid you not, I once got a warrior tank in normal Deadmines that was wearing cloth and leather grays, and didn't have a weapon. At all. That's right, he was trying to punch the mobs. Also he refused to switch out of battle stance and ignored party chat yelling at him to turn it on. My ele-shammy ended up tanking almost the entirety of Gearbreaker, I'm not even joking.
PuGs are so much worse now than they were in Wrath. At least they were easier back then and you didn't have to suffer the brainhurting idiocy for as long...
Jan 7th 2012 2:56PM I am female IRL and tend to play males. A couple of reasons.
First, most of the female avatars are too oversexualized for me, personally, and often have severe modeling flaws when compared to the males. Draenei girls have the worst swayback ever and too much badonkadonk (and their tails look like useless vestigial afterthoughts), female blood elves remind me too much of the girls in high school I wanted to punch in the face and their hands and feet are freakishly oversized, female night elves bounce and randomly gain the worst derpface ever while they do it, female dwarves boob-bounce so bad it makes my back hurt in sympathy, female humans have those horrid boxfeet and mittenhands with fingers that can't move at all, female trolls have a rod up their spine, don't blink, and their melee animations are abysmal, tauren females have no expressions or ankles either one... female worgen are just -horrible- compared to the males...
Anyway. Also, there's the social aspect. For some reason, there's an awful lot of immature 12 year olds that think that a pair of boobs mean you're incapable of playing the game. I've even heard of raid guilds that wouldn't even ALLOW female players to join because "girls can't play lol". This is honky, but I get less 'tude in pugs being 'male' than I do female.
Dec 31st 2011 1:56PM I've had that happen with a couple of my pets lately. I had my worg zone into HoO with a 'permanent' Time Warp and another pet with 'permanent sprint' going.
However, I did notice that if you Bestial Wrath, it overwrites the 'fake' buff and makes it go away. (I admit to being a little sad my time warp went away buuut...) Not sure what another spec could do to clear it... maybe the pet dying would also, but that's a lot of trouble to go to.
Dec 22nd 2011 4:31PM Why yes, I'd love one. Nothing says awesome like a bright teal riding turkey. Just sayin'.
