Let me first state that I do not think Blizzard should sell gold. However, I find your statement regarding effort and reward troubling.
"I've always appreciated Azeroth as the one place I would be (mostly) judged by my effort and skills and not how much money I could throw at stuff -- the closest thing to a level playing field I'm likely to find in everyday life."
The amount of money someone has to "throw at stuff" is directly related to the amount of effort one puts into earning said money. I do not know your situation, but I do know that many people do not do what it takes in RL to develop skills that are in demand.
If someone wants to earn more they need to invest time and effort into creating a highly needed set of skills. I for one was someone that in my 20's chose not to waste my time partying and instead worked 40 hours a week and then put in at least another 40 hours studying and making myself into someone that can demand a high salary. It is worth noting too, that I did this on my own without assistance. I was not lucky like some who have parents to pay for schooling, but I still achieved a high level of success.

Yes, he could have disabled that companion ability, guess he didn't expand the companion's bar to see that ability.
There are 4 action bars. By default only one is displayed at the bottom of the screen and you can scroll between the 4 available. The bottom action bar can be expanded to 2 rows and 1 row can be added to the left and right of the screen. If you display all for bars then you cannot scroll between them on the main bar.
The one thing related to bars that I am minorly disappointed in is that if you display 2 bars at the bottom your main bar is at the top and cannot be moved to the bottom. This is an issue for me as I like to map my secondary bar to F1-F12 and it is confusing when the bars are not arranged in the same manner as the keyboard.
Oct 19th 2011 10:53PM I for one can believe that people are finding it hard to return to other MMO's. After playing the SWTOR beta I cannot wait until early access starts. I currently play WoW, Rift, and LOTRO and I am ready to dump all of them for SWTOR. It is refreshing to play an MMO that DOESN'T just feel like a race to end game.

Aug 12th 2011 8:18PM I cannot speak for LoL, but I hated the F2P model of LoTRO. It is like TV with commercials. The game is constantly bugging you to spend more money in its store. That and with no bar to admission the place was full of idiots. I am gonna sound like an old man, but I'd love it if we could get a 21 and older only MMO. Now get off my lawn ;)
Aug 2nd 2011 10:23AM I may be the only one, but I think this would actually increase the gold farming business. Where does most gold farming come from, hacked accounts. Now that a hacked battle.net account is linked to real life money I would bet that hacking would increase significantly. Furthermore, since who listed an item is probably available info I could see hackers targeting individuals that post often as they would likely have more to steal.
Jul 28th 2011 11:58AM That has got to be the fastest response ever! I am not sure if it is working or not, but I do see the enclosure tag now. Thank you very much for updating the feed.
Jul 28th 2011 11:39AM Again, the RSS is broken. Seems like this is an issue every week now. Is there a reason that the "enclosure" tag is not included at the same time that this is posted? I end up almost a week behind because it takes that long for the RSS to be updated properly.
Jul 14th 2011 7:39PM This is exactly my situation. I spent roughly between 5 and 7 K on enchants alone for two characters. On the plus side, at least the Call to Arms was AV.
I am happy to see Blizzard trying. They could have easily not.
