Arcane Brilliance: News and notes from the patch 4.3 PTR {WoW}

Oct 15th 2011 4:30PM I think the Arcane and Frost changes are things they are playing with. So far, we've seen them raise the chance for Arcane Missiles procing to 100% in build 14809, and then reverting it in build 14849. More interesting perhaps is that they haven't listed either the frost or arcane changes into the official patch notes, so that kind of thing is probably very much still up in the air.

I guess the most important thing is that they're messing with the mechanics with how Arcane works. I would be most interested in getting an idea of what they are actually thinking with Arcane, but yeah, we'll be lucky to get more than a paragraph or so when they explain their changes.

Arcane Brilliance: On mage healing and other miscellany {WoW}

Sep 24th 2011 5:59PM Regarding healing mages, why does it have to be healing? Say in D&D, the healers are pretty much an out of combat role, with the third role in the trifecta being a 'god' if you will. By 'god', I mean you have the tank and you have the dps, and then you have a third role which is to make reality one's ***** in order to allow the tank and the dps to down the boss. Why not have arcane mess with space, time, and magic to make it possible? Say give a buff that can be given to the tank that warps space and prevents that tank from taking damage and/or hits?

There's lots of possibilities for a setup like that, and really, Arcane is the best talent tree for something like that. Sure, maybe a small relatively expensive healing spell would be good to include for emergencies, to help recover from errors and mistakes, but really, if Arcane just becomes another healing spec like the others, I'd be upset about that. But moving along to manipulating magic, space and time like the description says rather than just as another dps class, I think it would be a very positive development.

What are the implications of a real-dollar auction house? {WoW}

Aug 1st 2011 1:57PM That wasn't really the point of the comment. So you can sell something for real money and have it deposited? Suddenly, such things as money laundering laws could easily be an issue.

Matt touched on this sort of issue with the following paragraph:

"There are strict auction rules out there that vary from state to state, as well as income reporting and other rudimentary documentation that has to go on. Is my Diablo 3 income taxed? If I sell enough Stones of Jordan, will I be bumped up to another tax bracket? Suffice to say, there are many implications that a Diablo 3 cash auction house could potentially bring, but as an evolution of the way players interact with their virtual goods, it's a milestone."

So, would my transactions be tracked to try to prevent money laundering? Suddenly, with transactions being tracked by the Feds, what's to stop the IRS from coming pounding at my door about me forgetting to file income over it? There's a lot of things that can make this into a horrible development, initially at least.

Then again, it might put things into perspective with items. If this were to be implemented in WOW, would being able to sell a BOE for a hundred bucks make a big difference in how you'd view it? I've never done so, and don't really have any plans on doing so, but for the purposes of writing this, I checked the prices on some of the black market sites for selling BOEs. The normal 378 BOEs are going for about $130. So, as at those prices, the BOEs must be selling enough to pay for the bandwidth of the site and a wage of some sorts for those who farm such things. So, if I get together with 10/25 of my friends, and go farm a few of the easier bosses in Firelands, it wouldn't be unreasonable to be walking away with a few hundred bucks worth of BOEs. There are so many implications of that sort of things.

Aug 1st 2011 1:13PM It's about time. Though I guess I wonder if the money earned through the auctions can be withdrawn. I remember reading with EVE that there were issues about banking laws applying if they would have done it that way, so yeah.
