Reader UI of the Week: Clean up with Jeska's UI {WoW}

Mar 29th 2011 11:43PM 1. Lock your recount and omen.

2. From the default buff ui, the grouped buffs don't go away until you uncheck the frame for grouped buffs in the interface options panel. So do that.

3. As has been said, get rid of redundant boss frames.

Otherwise, you're golden. Nice UI, and grats on getting featured :D

Patch 4.1 PTR patch notes update for March 15 {WoW}

Mar 16th 2011 9:28AM The whole reason behind blizzard not wanting to make abilities different in pvp and pve is that it would be difficult relearning your buttons for pvp/pve. In other words, blizzard didn't want the abilities having completely different effects. This would be confusing, and, imo, kind of a lazy fix that would only detract from the game. Instead, they can do things like this that #1 don't change the feel for the ability in pvp/pve, and #2 don't make you relearn the ability in pvp/pve.

Raid Rx: An unofficial look at patch 4.1 healing changes and trinkets {WoW}

Feb 26th 2011 12:48PM what the heck... my comment was 4 times as long as that, it just didn't post all of it. CURSE THIS PATHETIC COMMENT SYSTEM.

anyhow, here's my conclusion, even though you don't get to see the whole post : /

Do not strive to use words of glory during this proc, especially not 1 pointers. In fact avoid using them at all, except during the first 1 or 2 casts. There was a lot of math that went into that, and i'm sorry you don't get to see it.

sorry :(

Raid Rx: An unofficial look at patch 4.1 healing changes and trinkets {WoW}

Feb 26th 2011 12:42PM The whole point of this trinket is to save you mana. Popping off a few flashes of light is not going to be beneficial, since their huge mana cost is going to outweigh the benefit of getting the mana reduction sooner to the point that its not even funny. In fact, you should hardly ever be using flash of light. Go look at the holy pally article a while ago that talked about how much to cast what and such.

In addition, 1 point word of glories? No thanks. it may get you the mana reduction slightly faster, but its not taking advantage of the mana reduction. You could probably use one at the very beginning of the 20 seconds, but not later. because of the GCD, it only quickens spells (and therefore mana reduction accumulation) by a short time. this means that word of glory is only slightly more effective in terms of mana reduction accumulation than, say, Divine Light. When used at the beginning, the ability to get in another spell is going to be worthwhile, since you are only giving up a small amount of mana reduction on the word of glory to get in that last spell which will have more mana reduction.

(Remember, don't think in terms of "getting the mana reduction sooner", because what you're really doing is squeezing together your spells in order to fit in another, higher mana reduction spell at the end.)

Feb 7th 2011 12:29AM wow thats weird... i created a new user per the instructions given in an earlier 'The Queue,' but it still used my old name on my second comment (changed it cause i changed realms / faction) guess i have to create a new account with a different email...

Feb 7th 2011 12:26AM Btw, if Chase or someone else wants to provide feedback on this comment that'd be great. Its a long post and i probably messed something up.

Feb 7th 2011 12:21AM For starters, get new trinkets. You need trinkets that give back mana or increase spirit.

Next, scrap the pvp gear (assuming you were in pve spec when i saw you). Even most low item level cataclysm gear is better than the 352 pvp gear for pve healing.

Get rid of Blessed Life. There are very few times when you will benefit from this without your tank doing something wrong, and in those cases you will probably wipe anyway. Overall a waste of a talent point.

Consider taking 1 point out of Last Word and one from Enlightened Judgements and putting them in Denounce. You can actually make a lot of mana if you take advantage of denounce procs (make a power aura or something). even when it hasn't procced you can just dps and break even or gain mana from exorcism spam (during the Magmaw down phase, for example).

Take your points out of Eternal Glory. It appears nice at first glance, but is actually a very weak talent, especially with the 15 second internal cooldown. Instead try to use Light of Dawn more often with proper positioning (use holy shock GCDs and Denounce Exorcism CDs to move around without downtime, if possible). The glyph just makes it even better.

If you've taken points out of Eternal Glory and Blessed Life like i've suggested, you can go ahead and make good use of those regained talent points in the Retribution talent tree. Improved Judgement can be nice because it makes it easier to stay back behind the ranged dps. This can be useful to keep you from having to move around as much, and makes the range on Judgement about equal to the range of Exorcism.

But you still have 2 more points to spend. You can put those points in Pursuit of Justice, if you need the speed boost on moving intensive fights. If you're not finding that to be a problem (most people don't), or perhaps you'd like a little bit more output on certain fights (your gear isn't the greatest, yet), then go ahead and put those points into Paragon of Virtue.

I highly recommend Paragon of Virtue over Pursuit of Justice, since, while the lower CD on Avenging Wrath can be nice (lets face it, we don't usually use that kind of spell on CD [pro tip: use CDs with Divine Plea]), the place where Paragon of Virtue really shines is the lowered CD to Hand of Sacrifice. This allows for liberal use of an extremely powerful spell. It almost equates to a pure external damage reduction cooldown, since the damage you take is generally low enough that Protector of the Innocent and Enlightened Judgements can pretty much cover the damage you're taking.

In regards to "rotation," make sure your using holy shock on CD, as well as making use of Light of Dawn (often more effective if you stand behind ranged dps, as i believe i mentioned earlier) instead of Word of Glory. Don't go overboard (especially until you get better gear), but don't keep yourself from using a lot of Divine Lights as apposed to Holy Lights. Holy Lights are good, but Divine Lights should be used as often as they're needed as long as you're not running completely OOM. And if you get new trinkets like i said earlier, mana should stop being AS MUCH of an issue. It will still be something to watch, but you can certainly suffer healing the occasional stupid dps once you get better mana regeneration and a larger mana pool.

That probably covered a lot more than you wanted to know, but i think it should help you a lot. And besides, I already wrote it, I'm not gonna waste a post that took that long to write. Hope this helps, and please respond if you're still having problems.

The Light and How to Swing It: Deciphering holy paladin talents {WoW}

Jan 24th 2011 12:19AM Chase,

Lets assume, for theorycrafting's sake, that 4.1 comes with a raid with lots of undead. Would it be possible for a shockadin to be competitive then?
