How encounter design plays into game balance {WoW}

Feb 25th 2012 12:53AM People complain because unlike us hunters there are huge skill gaps in other classes specs. A mage that did well in FL with his 1-button spam suddenly can't handle the more difficult fire rotation and QQ's about how he "doesn't like the fire playstyle" because he's bad at playing it. Similar thing happens with BM hunters, since BM is the easiest spec to play people consider themselves "BM hunters" because they aren't good at the harder specs or just don't want to put the time in to learn.

Feb 21st 2012 8:43PM Heroic modes should be nerfed the same amount as normal modes are nerfed. If anything, the people who are doing normal modes are not grinding their heads against a single boss encounter four hours a night 4 nights a week. That's what the heroic mode raiders do, and they are the ones who most benefit from the nerfs. A guild who can't kill normal spine of deathwing, the problem isn't that everything has 5% too much health and does 5% too much damage, the problem is they aren't playing very well. A guild who can't kill hc spine of deathwing may actually see a real benefit from that 5% nerf as they are all playing closer to their maximum potential.

The absolute elite of the elite kill all the hc modes before the nerfs anyway, it's only the world top 50-100 or so that I would say get a little gipped by these nerfs as the top 50 have already cleared everything and 101-700 are the ones who need nerfs to hc mode in order to keep progressing.

Nov 15th 2011 11:48PM I actually think Hunters don't have this problem as our Auto-shots are not tied as much to our active abilities. It's kind of like a DoT you have on a target ever time you are targeting them and then the active damage choices you make happen entirely on their own. Furthermore a 1-second GCD is actually not very intrusive especially when many of your abilities have a cast time longer than or equal to 1 second.

I think the problem you have outlined with the GCD is not a GCD problem at all but rather a warrior problem as no other class has their resource so closely linked to their white damage and no other non-caster (ie class that uses primarily instants) besides DK's have a 1.5 second GCD. a warrior is really the only class that has the problems you outlines above, so I would guess that that's where you should look for a change, either in the GCD or rage mechanic for warriors rather than in GCD's in general.

Hunter, Hunter, Hunter. did I mention Hunter? We have the coolest resource mechanic in the game, we're the only class smart enough to pick up and use the high-tech guns that everyone else passes up for shiny sticks, and don't forget how uncommonly good-looking we are!

Apr 28th 2011 7:57PM Indeed the AoE buff has been nice. It's a shame we still can't touch some classes ridiculous AoE abilities *cough* fire mages *cough* but it's great to actually consider pressing the button as opposed to just single targeting packs of AoE mobs.

Also 5k multi-shot crits were just depressing to look at.

Heroics aren't hard, even a well geared and skilled DPS can comfortably carry a group of weaker players through any heroic. People complaining about heroic difficulty, I just don't understand what heroics you're in, but they aren't the ones I've experienced.

Mar 3rd 2011 3:01AM As Frost said, It's a good time to be a hunter! Picking the specc we like? Huge raid utility without sacrificing raid DPS? Switching speccs fight by fight? It's like a dream you never want to wake up from!

For me, BM is the most welcome change. I have always been one of those "choose the highest DPS specc" kind of guys and I never got to experience the joy of having exotic looking pets and playing the BM specc since TBC. Now that I'm bringing the 3% buff to my raid I am simply loving it. On heroic Magmaw yesterday I even got our rogue to say on Vent: "I can't see any of the melee! It's like Jurassic Park in here!" as I popped BW and my Chromaggus grew to tremendous size. Plus, having changed factions to alliance at the end of Wrath, you can't imagine how satisfying it is to hear the ferocious Blood Lust noise spurring everyone on rather than the wimpy *chink!* of Heroism.

You may be missing either Serpent spread or Improved Serpent Sting in your SV specc, which is where the brunt of SV AoE damage comes from. That's the only thing I can think of as SV AoE is substantially better.
