The Daily Grind: What game terminology gets your goat? {Massively}

Aug 2nd 2011 2:24PM I was completely baffled the first time I heard someone use mob to refer to a group of mobs - 2 maybe 3 years ago?

It's not a bad coinage, it's just a case of linguistic decay between generations. People hear a term incorrectly and repeat their misunderstood meaning of it.

Somehow, players of all of the older generations of MMO's didn't have problems with it - it is only with the growing popularity of WoW that the term suddenly comes into confusion. Even then, WoW inherited a lot of the previous culture and took a very long time to alter the vocabulary.

I think I blame this one on the growth of voice chat - back when everything was typed out, things were more clear. But when some young kid is hearing something for the first time in background conversation, what can you really expect?

A spoonful of sugar helps the Fel Mana potion go down {WoW}

Sep 14th 2007 5:37AM Do the individual charges of a stacking debuff have their own cooldowns - or does drinking a new potion reset the duration of all charges back to 15?

If it doesn't, then this potion can't possibly stack 10 times. The debuff lasts 15 minutes. Potion cooldowns on 2 minutes.

Ergo, chain drinking these potions can only bring the debuff up to 8 charges, and even then, the full 8 will only last for about 1 minute before dropping back down to 7 (less if you ever refrain from chugging the instant your cooldown ends).

But I'm a hunter, so what do I care? :)

@3 Amen.

Richard Bartle's famous last words {WoW}

Jul 18th 2007 9:37PM Wow, the ignorance. You people have _NO_ idea who this man is. He practically invented the MMO. He's entitled to have a strong opinion about the current state of the industry, we owe him that much.

BigRedKitty: Snakes Are People Too {WoW}

Jul 18th 2007 7:13PM The real trick to using Snake Trap is that their aggro radius takes some getting used to. They're not shy about chasing mobs across the room.

Before busting the trap out in high stress environments, do yourself and your group a favor and put in some good practice with the thing.

Making money in BC: Mine! {WoW}

Jul 12th 2007 4:46AM And this is news how? :)

Next you'll be telling us that orcs are green... :P

BigRedKitty: Just Say No to Serpent Sting {WoW}

Jul 11th 2007 5:11PM Serpent sting is even less useful than you make it out to be. It ONLY gets its full benefit if it lasts the full duration.

What happens when you blow almost 300 mana to DoT a trash mob before your pet and two rogues turn on it? You just spent 275 mana to deal 44 damage :P Let that happen a few times while clearing out the trash... and that twitch to serpent sting is your most expensive bad habit.

2.1.2: Undocumented changes {WoW}

Jun 21st 2007 5:56PM @You could previously vendor any cut Azure Moonstone, Flame Spess., Shadow Draenite, or Golden Draenite for 1g each, it was silently nerfed back to 25s, the same as the uncut gem.

This wasn't meant as a nerf and it wasn't entirely undocumented. I don't remember the reference, but it was promised a while back as a fix that would make it cheaper for people to list cut gems on AH.

What's next for WoW instances? {WoW}

Jun 12th 2007 9:24PM I would love it if they redid all of the old Azeroth instances with a hard mode - but did it right. None of this lazy just bumping mob levels up through the roof and giving them 100x the DPS. Change the strategies up a bit, make the instances new and interesting.

Maybe hard mode Gnomeregan could be a lvl 50 instance with radiation clouds that you have to vent off before being able to travel to certain areas safely, etc...

WoW Moviewatch: The Simpsons spoof WoW {WoW}

May 23rd 2007 7:49PM Why does everyone automatically assume an MMORPG spoof absolutely has to be Warcraft?

- the spoof runs in a web browser
- they actually offer avatar customization options :P
- it's permadeath global pvp
- built in voice chat
- player-run shops/housing
- permanent status effects
- etc...

These are all notable features of other MMO's that are decidedly not WoW.

Dual-heading and WoW: a how-to guide {WoW}

May 11th 2007 8:20PM I dual head on all of my machines - but I don't span WoW across multiple monitors. I find it much more useful to have my web browser on the second monitor. Load up instance maps, perform thott searches and wowecon price checks for friends, etc...

Works wonderfully, just make sure your graphics are set to full screen windowed mode, otherwise the game will minimize any time you try to do something.
