Aug 17th 2011 8:09PM This is completely unrelated to 4.3, but I dearly hope someone can answer. I'm curious what all we know about James Harrington, better known as Admiral Ripsnarl. How much we know as fact, how much is probably a solid assumption, and how much we can apply via tinfoil hat logic.
I'm a sucker for the tragic setup, so he's always been an interesting character to me. Here are my main questions:
1. Is he from Gilneas? It can be assumed he had a maritime career before joining the Defias Brotherhood and commanding one of their juggernauts. I assume it's not unreasonable to believe there would be some manner of use for sailors in Gilneas. But how would this work in Gilneas civilization? Is there any trade over the sea, despite the wall? Would vessels only exist for defense, and possibly fishing boats? Furthermore, if he's not from Gilneas, then where the heck is he from? How was he afflicted by the curse? I think this could possibly be ascertained by looking at the clothing his wife and children wear in his nightmare sequence, but I can't recall off the top of my head.
2. Is it safe to assume he did in fact murder his wife, his son, and his daughter? This is the majority of what we know about James. His nightmare consists of his family being attacked and killed by feral worgen, with his wife being killed at his hand. Is this to be taken literally? That James killed his wife, and his children were killed by other worgen? Did James kill all of them himself? Or should we see this as something else, perhaps. This is a nightmare, obviously. James' worst fear. Perhaps he doesn't know the fate of his family - doesn't remember what he did when he was in that feral state, and his worst possible explanation is that he murdered them all?
3. How do you believe James met Vanessa? How did he even get over to Westfall? We notice in a few quests that there seem to be a number of worgen comfortable operating sea vessels either as pirates or something slightly more reputable. This ties back into question one where I wonder what this amounts to in Gilnean culture, but in James' case specifically, did her perhaps acquire a vessel beforehand, or is there some other explanation for ending up where he did?
Any further speculation on this is quite welcome. I realize these are multiple and detailed questions, but I'd love to have a discussion even just in the comments. And if I've overlooked something that's been otherwise explained, I apologize and welcome correction!
