Aug 12th 2011 6:54PM I totally agree with what your saying about meter topping not being important. I really only posted that second part for the benefit of any other shaman out there that may find themselves in my position. Overall I done little healing but what healing I did do definitely helped as it came when it was most needed.
And yeah properly co-ordinated healing cd's really make or break the fight. SLT was the only reason I was even asked to go resto for it :P
Aug 12th 2011 11:57AM ''This is certainly one fight where stacking healers is not the best solution.''
We got our first kill on Staghelm the other night after increasing to 8 healers by accident. We were running with 6 or 7 healers but on the night our resto shammys were both off. Both me and the other enhance shammy went resto due to some confusion on what exactly the RL wanted. Long story short we killed him very easily after just 2 attempts. This is after a few nights of wiping and maybe 30 attempts with 6 or 7 healers where the closest we got was a sub 5% wipe.
I must admit I didn't actually do much healing apart from during scorpion phases. As I had specced purely for the fight I used Focused Insight to boost heals during scorpion phase. During cat phase I spammed Lightning Bolt to regen mana through Teluric Currents, the spirits were my dps priority during this phase.
Apr 3rd 2011 4:15PM Yeh macro probably did have a reset on target conditional in. I had just modified my old shock sequence macro from wrath.

Also worth pointing out, even if clipping Flame Shock early in itself turns out to be dps neutral, using the harder hitting Unleash Elements earlier than would have been otherwise used is a dps increase.

Of course you still use higher priority abilities as they are supposed to be used, but the only abilities higher in my list are ST_0, LL, LB, FS_UF. Clipping the dot is in no way a dps loss. A buffed Flame Shock does more damage within the 6 second cd of your shocks, it also has the added bonus that there are 3 chances for it to crit in that time, the intitial shock plus the 2 ticks. I also quite often find I am refreshing the dot just as it is about to run out. This is due to higher priority abilities coming off cd before I can get a shock off. Whether it is the Flame Shock or the following Earth Shock that is delayed doesn't matter the effect is the same, the shock cd is pushed back a little in the time window of the UE cd meaning less of the dot will be clipped. I rarely clip more than 4 seconds of the existing dot, and with my understanding off the dot system in Cata this doesn't reset the ticks it merely adds time to the existing dot.
I completely understand why you do it like that, as I said I tried it. What I found was I got messed up with target switches having to wait on the 15sec cd to reset before I could start back into my rotation. I found it had the opposite effect and rather than letting me focus on the fight, I was focusing on my shocks more than I ought to be. I now have Unleash Elements on the keybind where my Lightning Shield was on WotLK, this just works better for me.

I tried a castsequence macro that had UE at the start. I dropped it as I didn't like my shocks being tied into UE on target switches.
Apr 2nd 2011 9:41PM I prefer to cast Unleash Elements as soon as it comes off cd. There are two reasons for this. First of all Unleash Elements hits harder than many of our other abilites, on a recent WoL parse the average hit for Unleash Flame was 8.8k with average crit being 13.8k. Unleash Wind added another 3.8k and 7.9k crit to the mix as you can see the damage is not to be sniffed at, in fact it hits almost as hard as a Lightning Bolt. The other reason I cast it as soon as possible is because of the Unleash Wind buff, I want to have as much uptime as possible on that buff.
Of course you still want to be casting Flame Shock whenever the Unleash Flame buff is up, so I just go ahead and clip it. A buffed Flame Shock does more damage than an Earth Shock within 2 ticks, so there is no dps loss from clipping the dot. The most important thing is to make sure that a buffed Flame Shock is up all the time.
I use a castsequence macro atm with Flame Shock, Earth Shock. I have Earth Shock on the alt modifier should I be able to fit the 3rd shock in before Unleash Elements comes back off cd.
Mar 25th 2011 11:01AM All being well and healers have the slimes and feuds sorted, the one thing that can cost a kill is timing on pushing the last phase. We had several wipes before our 1st kill due to impatient dps pushing the last phase before the raid had been sufficiently healed. It is vital to go into last phase at as close to maximum hp as possible as Nefarions shadow bolt damage effectively becomes the enrage timer. We now call for everybody to bandage themselves before pushing, this gives time to the healers to heal up and also means the dps can't push it too early as they are channeling for 8 seconds. :P
As a shaman drop glyphed Stoneclaw Totem on cd in last phase it really helps to keep you up for a longer time. Also if you are dps shaman macro Wind Shear into your shocks, I usually go into last phase below some of the healers on threat using this trick. :)
Jan 9th 2011 12:44AM Excellent article. I'd just like to mention grounding totem as I don't think you gave it enough love. With both haste buffs being covered now by more classes I've been dropping it a lot.
It's definately useful for absorbing casts in trash packs throughout any instance but the best use I have found for it is in Bastion of Twilight. On the Valiona and Theralion fight, if Valiona casts her Blackout ability on one of my group grounding will catch it. Your healers will love you for this as it means no extra damage from grouping up and sharing meteors and the dispel.
