Brink review: Jumping high and falling flat {Joystiq}

May 10th 2011 12:32PM @(Unverified)

I'm pretty sure most reviews are done on debug units, so in that regard achievements on a GT attached to a retail unit would pretty often prove to be a bad way of judging someone's playtime with a game. In fact, using achievements as a measure of how much game has been played seems like a fool's errand all the time.

In this particular case, it appears that

a) you don't necessarily earn a ton of achievements anyway (Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann mentioned only having 330), and
b) some of them are unlocked only if you're on the victorious team, so you may not get them anyway.

And, of course, is the little addition they posted at the end that Griffin played about 12 hours of the game. That's a far cry from 2 hours. Take that as you will. I don't see any reason to not believe that, not any more than I disbelieve any other game review that just seems a little bit off of the mean. Especially when you read the review, Griffin brings up specific complaints that I can reason out as problems that really become frustrating after multiple hours of playing.

Calling a reviewer incompetent over petty, refutable nonsense is insulting, especially if it's flat out wrong and I can completely understand getting mildly defensive about it. I'm not entirely sure about the "alcoholic parent" comment but you just called him a twat and said he has a "delusions of grandeur" (...what?), so yeah.

Maybe it's because it's incredibly insulting for people to insult your work, especially when you put a lot of time and effort into it? I'd get pretty defensive, too.

Man, I am *so surprised* that someone who's already bought the game before release takes issue with the review!

Bizarre Creations farewell video is legitimately sad {Joystiq}

Feb 18th 2011 11:13AM @anoffday
The anti-EA thing is so old and played out at this point. They haven't been the monolithic, game-pushing machine ala current Activision for years now.

Adventure game portal Sarien back with Activision's approval {Joystiq}

Jan 29th 2011 7:03PM I refuse to accept this. Activision is evil and they must've put viruses on the website or something just to help advance their mission of world domination and the ruination of the almighty video game industry.

Joystiq Top 10 of 2010: Red Dead Redemption {Joystiq}

Dec 31st 2010 4:36PM @ThePotato

This is the first year that I feel like Joystiq's weighted system did them a disservice, especially with the back half of the list. I usually find myself agreeing with most of the final selections, but not so much this time around. Oh well.

12 Days of Joyswag: Xbox 360 S plus 'Games for the Holidays,' A World of Keflings, Raskulls, and ilomilo {Joystiq}

Dec 26th 2010 11:36AM I got some games for Cristmas, but my favorite gift was a great cookbook.

12 Days of Joyswag: A Fallout: New Vegas neon sign (yeah, f'real) {Joystiq}

Dec 16th 2010 8:23PM I want this Fallout sign because I'm a poor college student and a neon sign (of any sort) would look pretty bad ass in my apartment.

DmC: Devil May Cry to utilize Unreal Engine {Joystiq}

Sep 30th 2010 11:39AM Aw, rats! First his HAIR, now the ENGINE... Ninja Theory is really screwing the pooch with this one. This game I've never played sucks.

Blue Castle Games acquired by Capcom {Joystiq}

Sep 15th 2010 8:42AM Capcom was looking to buy Gearbox, but they were only interested in making amazing 3D Realms games.
