The Light and How to Swing It: Retribution in the Firelands, part 2 {WoW}

Sep 14th 2011 12:22PM The buffs you gain up in the air benefit other specs much, much more than it benefits us (I'm looking at you, fire mages). If the top ret parses for Alys are bordering on 50k, that's enough proof to let the fire mages, boomkins, affliction warlocks, and shadow priests go up in our stead, raking in at least 15k extra DPS simply because they like haste more. For the sake of optimizing your raid DPS, staying on the ground just makes sense. It also lets us make use of our burst DPS and interrupts, especially when those ranged DPS that we're sending up don't have the same tools.

Of course, I did qualify that part of the article with "if you want my opinion." I guess you didn't!

Sep 14th 2011 11:56AM These are great ideas for future posts, and I'm sorry that you feel these raid guides aren't very interesting. The problem is that there hasn't been a whole lot of stability in the ret columnist position so this material was never released when it was still "relevant", meaning I need to play catch up with the rest of the columns. I hope you'll stick with it.

Sep 14th 2011 12:35AM I don't really see a need for "large changes" again. Although things like Holy Power and Inquisition make the beginning of encounters a bit clunky, ret really has a flow to it that works, at least in my own humble opinion. The only thing I would possibly change would be to do something about Hammer of Wrath (I hardly use it when I'm chaining my cooldowns) and perhaps take some of the RNG out of our damage.

Aug 31st 2011 3:44PM The 72 Strength difference between the Cinch of Flaming Ember and the Uncrushable Belt of Fury make me doubt that. Heroic? Maybe. Pre-heroic? Not at all.

Aug 31st 2011 2:45PM The strategy I described in the article is the one we use on 25-mans every week, and none of our tanks have expressed concern about being bursted to death. Of course, YMMV but it does work on 25s.

Aug 31st 2011 2:43PM I did the fight once or twice on 10-man, which I'm assuming from the DPS spread you described is your raid setting. If you're having trouble hitting the legs, remember that they have a fairly large hitbox, AND the stomp doesn't knock you back anymore, AND the lava lines are now shorter. Hopefully some of this alleviates your woes, but I do sympathize; in our 10-man Rhyo kills, it was very difficult to steer. Best of luck!

Aug 31st 2011 2:18PM As I said in the article, Concussive Stomp spawns the volcanoes; it doesn't destroy them. And about the activating volcanoes behind him thing, I'm sure it will be one of those great mysteries of Firelands about how it actually works, right alongside how to get Shannox to spawn!

The Light and How to Swing It: Basic retribution cooldowns -- when to pop your wings {WoW}

Jul 13th 2011 4:02PM I'm sorry, I just can't get behind clcRet. The very nature of the addon discourages the player from actually learning the rotation. Putting forth the effort to learn something new is part of what makes this game fun, and clcRet just kills that.

If Ret is your offspec, then by all means, use it.

If Ret is your mainspec, however, don't deprive yourself of what can be a very fun and interesting rotation.

Jul 13th 2011 3:55PM With 3/3 Sanctified Wrath, AW becomes a 2 minute cooldown.

In the technical sense, the AW+Zeal combo is the highest DPS usage for cooldowns right now. Splitting the cooldowns results in a DPS loss on a Patchwerk fight, but I've found that it's nice for things like the head phases of Magmaw, where you have about a minute between "burn phases".

The Light And How To Swing It: Retribution changes and new gear in 4.2 {WoW}

Jul 4th 2011 10:56AM Weapon speed is, in fact, a HUGE deal. Current stat weights (from Redcape's spreadsheet on the EJ forums) show weapon speed to be about 800 times more valuable than Strength.

If Akoma is right about the Deathblade being changed to a 3.8, only then will it be worth getting.
