There are fewer than 256 emotes in WoW. This means that all the emotes can be represented by a single 16bit word.

If all 4000 people spam an emote 5 times a second you get 5*16bits*4000/8(bits/byte)=40kB/s going from the server to each client.

A single line of chat can be 255 characters each being a 64bit word.

If just 10% of those people make normal conversation, say one message very five seconds you get 4000*10%*255*64bits/8(bits/byte)*(1message/5seconds)=163.2kB/s going from the server to each client.

If spamming emotes is what brought the server down then there is something wrong with their coding. It was much more likely that it was brought down just by the volume of people with a small fraction having a normal conversation. Blizz is being completely full of shit handing out bans for this. They should either increase their server capacity or do a better job of capping their server populations. It should be impossible to cause server instability through any in-game action.

Jun 16th 2011 3:48PM Are you using recount? At the moment there's some bug in it that will eventually cause WoW to come to a screeching halt. You'll know if it's recount if you reset it and the problem goes away. If that's the case you can switch to skada. Once you learn to navigate the bars you get the same functionality out of it except for the real time graphs.

Jun 14th 2011 11:17PM 5. Paralysis is no match for Planar Shift, Paralysis has a cast time so Eregos can pre-cast Planar Shift, and planar shift lasts nearly twice as long as paralysis. Meanwhile Ozruk is either casting shatter and being pelted with Planar Anomolies, or running away from them.

Jun 14th 2011 11:05PM Ozruk vs Eregos it's Eregos no contest:
1. Eregos is a great wyrm, and thus so badass he doesn't even need to be scaled to Ozruk's level. His health and damage output are orders of magnitude greater than that of Ozruk. Not to mention he's about ten times bigger.
2. All of Ozruks big damage dealers are avoidable, his spell reflect only lasts so long, and even during the time that it's up there nothing keeping Eregos from simply beating the tar out of him, his Elementium Spike Shield is only effective if the attacker does rapid strikes, but Eregos is huge so his massive attacks are fairly slow.
3. On top of all this Eregos is summoning about five whelps every 30 seconds or so that just shred Ozruk when his spell reflect is down and he has no way of dealing with them since neither of his AoE attacks have a large enough range vs the whelps.
4. All of Ozruk's attacks are physical and thus subject to armor mitigation, and Eregos, being a dragon, is one of the most heavily armored creatures to exist. Eregos' scales are mitigating at the very least 50% of the damage Ozruk is putting out. Ozruk has no mitigation against Eregos' attacks due to their magical nature except during the brief window of spell reflect where Eregos is forced to melee.

May 31st 2011 7:32AM WAIT, Wait, wait. Dominate mind is useless against a single foe since you can't attack yourself, BUT Throngus has two heads, dominate one mind and you still have the other head to attack. At bare minimum the Scarlet Duo would be able make him do significant damage to himself and cripple the abilities associated with the head not being controlled. Once one of the heads is taken out then the stuns can no longer be mitigated.

Also, in either SM or Grim Batol Throngus' shield can be LoS'ed so that would only serve to give the Duo the opportunity to heal to full.
