Random raid factors and the high cost of failure {WoW}

Jan 30th 2012 4:05PM I wonder how much the problem stems from the rolling rather than
progressive raid model. Under a progressive system you'll see more
filtering, so that by the time people get to higher raids, you can be
sure they know how to play and are in the habit of quickly learning
new fights. That means the devs can hold off the random noob checks
until later raids and only test the higher end guilds that would have
a more homogeneous, and high, skill level. With the rolling model,
both good and bad players will inevitably run into those fights,
causing the problem we see.

The Daily Quest: Premium posts {WoW}

May 20th 2011 10:33PM Tooting my own horn here but, by coincidence, I'd posted this in the morning before I'd heard about the service:

Why do we assume that we want to, and must be able to, play with friends? Ideally I could play with friends, but in my experience the thing preventing that is not skill or server divides, but divergent interests. I do actually want to play with friends, not the friends that I dragged into a game, but the friends that I met in the game. Those are the friends that I know want to play it and play it as I would. I wonder how much happier people would be finding more friends who share interests rather than trying to push friends into unwanted 'fun'.
