Arcane Brilliance: The two-button mage myth {WoW}

Jul 17th 2011 8:54AM Kiomi, I think the point that people are trying to make is not that the Mage's other spells are never used, but that their core attack is only two spells. Most of the time you're spamming Arcane Blast because it has a damage stack, and you pop off your Arcane Missiles when they proc, and that's how Arcane does the most damage.

Jul 17th 2011 2:46AM Seriously, though? I was all set to defend my Arcane Mage here as "not simplistic, not just some 2-key spammer that a trained ape could do", but you know what? I say HUZZAH for 2-button DPS rotations! SO much less likely to accidentally pull the boss when you're clearing trash mobs, for example. Mages are designed to fill a role: lots and lots of damage. They do it well. Is it necessary to complicate that? Why would you want to? They can do lots of other things outside of the instance dynamic... let's face it, we'd all be a lot bitchier if we didn't have Mages to port us here and there. If I'm DPSing in a group, I'm more than happy to leave the complex juggling to the Warlocks... I am there to pile on the hurt, and if I only have to use 2 buttons to do it, I'm not complaining. This doesn't mean that Mages are boring to play... unless of course all you ever do is raid.

Jul 17th 2011 2:08AM All right, well, I feel like a total noob now, because I have Fire and Frost spells in my Arcane Mage's bar.

Breakfast Topic: What parts of the game are most underappreciated? {WoW}

Jul 16th 2011 11:30AM ...love watching the aurora in the skies over Northrend. I also once walked the track of the Deeprun Tram from Stormwind to Ironforge just so I could look out the underwater tunnel.

Breakfast Topic: What class should a brand new player pick? {WoW}

Jul 15th 2011 1:35PM After reading through these posts (and re-reading my own) I'm noticing a trend here. Most people (including me) seem to think the best approach is to ask "do you want to hit stuff or shoot from far away?" This is making me think that maybe I should have recommended a Shaman first. They do decent melee, decent ranged, can wear decent armor, and kind of have a "wow" factor...let's face it, Lightning Bolt is more visually dramatic than Shadow Bolt. That might seem superficial, but if as in my case you are trying to woo someone into playing, a little showmanship can't hurt.
