Feb 17th 2012 4:12PM I don't think Blizzard has any right to oppose Valve's trademark of DOTA. DOTA is a game that defined a genre, but it is still a game (or a mod of a game, at least) and can be copyrighted like any other game or piece of intellectual property. Valve has the rights to this particular piece of intellectual property because they employ IceFrog.

I speculate that Blizzard's opposition to the trademark is for money reasons instead of moral reasons. If their Notice of Opposition goes through and they win, they won't have to pay any royalties to Valve and can pocket every cent of profit Blizzard DOTA makes.
