Jan 3rd 2012 2:22PM "So, i don't really buy that heroics are now objectively easier. Veterans are just much better at them than they were at BC. And us, news, casuals or bads, are having just as a hard time with Cata heroics as veterans did when they were first confronted with BC heroics."
Nope. Here's the thing: in their first iteration, BC heroics *required* CC on trash pulls. Or the highly skilled and as-geared-as-possibly tank died. Pull aggro on trash? Dead. Don't move out of the fire instantly? Dead. There was no margin for error.
These days you can waltz into a heroic, the tank grabs entire trash packs at once, and it gets AE'd down.
So it's not a question of skill. The two factors that have really changed since then is that tanks don't really have threat issues anymore, not even on packs, and that blue or purple gear is easier to get before you head into the dungeon. But that doesn't account for the difference in difficulty.
Jan 3rd 2012 2:02PM As much as I appreciated the challenge of the early heroics, there were a lot of logistical problems with them.
1) Brutal trash pulls required CC which, in turn, required that you have the right CC class in your group. This made getting groups together tough.
2) Using (long chains of) heroics for attunement quests, mandating that everyone in the guild that wants to raid has to go through them. This put a lot of stress on guild tanks and healers in TBC who had to run the damn things over and over. Thankfully these sorts of attunements seem to be a thing of the past.
3) Heroics as "end-game" content for non-raiders and alts. This alone kills the idea of any heroic being truly difficult. If the masses have nothing better to do than to run heroics to upgrade their character, the heroics have to be tuned to the masses.
I will say that one of my fond memories of WoW was completing the CoT: Black Morass heroic before it was nerfed. That bastard was hard.
Dec 22nd 2011 5:13PM A purple and gold shirt! That would look lovely on my tauren. :)
Dec 19th 2011 4:09PM That is a great gift! For me! :)
Dec 13th 2011 4:19PM I've been leveling a warlock alt for the past few months. I started as Demonology, which I thought was great. The felguard is pretty awesome at both doing damage and holding aggro. However, I noticed that I was usually doing piss-poor DPS in 5-mans.
I had done affliction before, on a previous alt, and found it boring, so I tried out Destruction. Wow! I was killing mobs so much faster, my rotation became much simpler, and I was doing better in 5-mans. And once you get Incinerate you're in very good shape. I'm only at 66 right now, but switching from demo to dest changed the game for me, for the better.
Dec 13th 2011 1:24PM You can, with addons. I use Postal and love it.
Dec 13th 2011 1:22PM It seemed to me that Cata already did the voice acting thing. There's voice acting all over the place, most notably in that quest to put Thrall back together. It's nowhere near the level of SW:TOR, I'm sure, but the game has changed a lot on that front. And that change was probably in response to SW:TOR, as that's something that's presumably easy for them to add.
Some play-by-play in pvp would be pretty nice, though.
Agreed on the other points. Especially group looting!
Dec 9th 2011 4:17PM I thought leaving Righteous Fury in for all specs was a little strange, myself, but then we know things aren't finalized and that might change. There have been a few times when holy tanking was useful (that sea giant fight in SSC, frex), but it's definitely a corner case. However, it could just be that all tank-capable classes will have their tank switches intact so that they can off-tank at times.
The loss of the heals doesn't bother me, at least not as a paladin. As ret, I use: WoG (not so much anymore as it heals for crap @ 85), Holy Light (but only because of the talent that boosts it after a kill), and Divine Light for when HL isn't boosted. But really, if I had one fast effective heal that actually healed for a decent amount, that would be all I need. I'm not going to be healing anyone else because my heals are weak and I have no mana.
I wonder if the shuffling of healing spells to healing specs is meant to partially address the hybrid issue...
Nov 15th 2011 5:34PM I love Icecrown so much. Such an epic zone. Massive gates of doom protected by huge level 80 elite undead. Massive armies carpeting the ground, forcing you to get around via flying. Which you would be doing anyway, but it was cool to see a zone designed around the fact that the players would be flying through it. Airship quest hubs that take potshots at each other as they pass. I still love flying around IC and just being awed at the size and scope of it all.
I loved the progression too, as the crusade tries to assault Arthas through the wrath gate in dragonblight, fails, and is forced to proceed through the main gates in the IC zone. The quests go from gate to gate, taking down one after another, until you start attacking the outside of the citadel itself. (and then a tournament happens...)
Nov 14th 2011 11:16AM Trying to learn the spec in a heroic might not have been the best course of action. You could pick it up easily in BS and WotLK because all you had to do was spam FoL or HL.
