Addon Spotlight: A UI primer for returning WoW players {WoW}

Mar 23rd 2012 12:08AM With the evolution of rotations to priority systems, the basic shadowed-clock-style icon timer is really insufficient. My favorite solution is to add numerical timers to icons, done with OmniCC.
(It's a quality-of-life improvement on the magnitude of Matt's infatuation with AdiBags.)

ReforgeLite is a must. ReforgeLite can calculate the optimal reforge in 5 seconds when it would take a math nerd like me 15 minutes to sort it out by hand. Frankly, its the best reforging tool available.

Also, I would like to caution returning players about addon bloat. Some addons can really chew through memory, especially when you are running with high-quality graphics in 25-man raids (i.e., LFR). Addon Control Panel lets you turn addons off and on with a simple /reload , rather than having to fully log.

Totem Talk: Loot to maximize your elemental shaman's mastery {WoW}

Mar 3rd 2012 4:54PM I'd like to point out on the legs you have that you can gain 40 mastery at the cost of 10 intellect by gemming for the +30 int slot bonus with two Artful Ember Topazes (+20int/+20 mastery). The relative stat value of int to mastery is about 2:1 (it's actually a little bit better, about 100:55). Likewise, gemming the Band of reconstruction with an Artful Ember Topaz gains 20 mastery at the cost of only 10 intellect. The net result is +60 mastery and -21 int (due to the 5% bonus to int from mail specialization).

With the above changes, I managed to squeeze the gear until it gave me exactly 17% spell hit, as well as +66 mastery rating, -12 haste rating, -21 and int compared to Josh's setup. http://chardev.org/?profile=362206
For comparison, off the above linked build, I swapped out the tier shoulders for the Imperfect Specimens and the Resto tier chest for the Elem one. Once again, I got exactly 17% hit rating exactly, along with +15 mastery rating, +22 haste rating, and +0 int compared to Josh's setup. http://chardev.org/?profile=362210

Conclusion: the Imperfect Specimens + Elemental tier chest > tier shoulders + Resto chest.

The last gasp of 25-man raiding {WoW}

Feb 24th 2012 5:59PM With the way guilds level now, I doubt many people are disbanding guilds dedicated to 25-man raiding. I'm sure that most of them are switching to 10-man raiding. Each active, raiding guild is the *only* thing that controls whether it chooses to raid 10-man or 25-man. There is no inherent barrier stopping an active, already formed guild from switching from 10-man to 25-man right now--there is no in-game penalty for doing so. I personally would be willing to be the GM, and raid lead, if I had to be, for a 25-man raiding guild. However, I very much enjoy being in the 10-man guild I am in, and it would take a lot to get me to leave them willingly.
I don't think the problem is there are plenty of cats milling about but nobody to herd 24 of them into DS or FL. I think the real problem is that 10-man raid guilds, with their shorter rosters (even if they have multiple 10-man groups, I'd expect each raid group to be fairly consistent week-to-week), form closer communities than 25-man raid guilds do.

Feb 24th 2012 4:28PM With the rationale for LFR they presented, I think Blizz laid out its case as to why there will never again be a significant difference (mob health aside) between 10-man and 25-man content. It's simply not worth their developers' time to make 25-man-only raids. At the same time, with the LFR around, I don't think normal 25-mans are going to be going away in MoP--it's easier to ratchet down an encounter from 25-man reg to LFR than to tweak 10-man to get to a 25-man easy mode.
That being said, if Blizz decided to be most efficient with their developers time, they would make a one-size-fits-all, 15-man raid, with three (or four!) difficulties: LFR, reg, and heroic. (The possible fourth would be a super-heroic OMGWTFBBQ difficulty--one that makes heroic Ragnaros look like LFR Morchok--to give the very elite raid guilds something to chew on for a while, with titles & feats of strength for each boss.)

Addon Spotlight: Scrolling combat text addons {WoW}

Feb 16th 2012 11:12PM "Scrolling Combat Text" (aka SCT) is my scrolling combat text addon of choice. I like the way the default Blizz UI handles combat text. When I started raiding in 4.0.3, thoughm I realized that I seriously needed to find a replacement. With two resto druids and a resto shaman as our default healing set-up, the bottom half of my visual field was getting smothered in green. SCT just fit my bill--simple, and could filter out small heals (from HoTs/totems) and only told me when I was getting a significant heal.

Have reforging demands become too complex? {WoW}

Jan 31st 2012 1:42PM Reforging made simple: ReforgeLite (Curse link: http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/reforgelite ). It automates reforging calculations as well as the reforging itself. It can handle both preset and manual stat weights and multiple stat caps, minimums, or ranges. The main window displays all your reforgeable stats on your gear in one table for easy reference. (ReforgeLite does include stats from enchants, gems, and professions in its calculations, and in its totals for the various stats. It also apparently includes base Spirit in its total for Spirit, but for the Spirit=hit classes, it properly ignores base Spirit for calculations.) It is very lightweight, memory-wise, except when you are letting it calculate. Also, I recommend letting it calculate a few times (3 usually is enough) to make sure that you are using the optimal reforge arrangement. When you are ready to reforge, the addon tells you the total amount the ethereal is about to take you for.
