Apr 3rd 2012 4:43PM I'm wondering how much experimentation Guardians in beta are doing to combat the rage problems. As present in Cata, the spoken best way to build ratings is to amass dodge, and then go for mastery. Maybe we shouldn't be thinking that way. Even in Cata, I have tried many different builds to see how filling up this and that stat correlate to more mitigation. Currently I sit on a hit and expertise capped build with a focus on Mastery and forsaking dodge and haste as much as possible (though still, obviously, agi is the number one stat for gems and enchants.) And people shit brix sometimes when I'm tanking giant AoE pulls and rarely taking damage at all, while also hitting over 30k (though this is simply because bear AoE skills do bonkers damage presently.)
Maybe, moving forward, we need to look more at crit and haste. They will equate to more rage generation, and in turn, more mitigation, and free use of other rage-consuming abilities. Haste has a particular interest to me now, due to lacerate ticks potentially offering Mangle refreshes, so not only are we getting more melee hits out of it, but more potential rage generation through that.
But crit is important to keep an eye on too. Crit has a large, present effect on both our white and yellow hits, and generates more rage than white hits and mangle. But I still have doubts about crit, because we may not have an ability to use on every GCD any more (we may or may not, consider things like Mangle > Lacerate > Faerie Fire > Lacerate or maybe Thrash, depending on readiness of mitigation debuff and potential for more Mangle refreshes. Using Lacerate, that's 4 straight GCDs of damage with no costs incurred.)
And then we come to the worth of hit and expertise to rage gen. A missed or a dodged attack could waste a lot of rage:time for us, so I say consider that before anything when trying new stat builds. It does only convert to mitigation by secondhand means based on the player's aptitude to use the correct mitigation abilities at the right time, but that is a matter of skill, not numberz.
Further, maybe mastery armor will be plenty to keep us going through the rage downtime, if we do not want to stat for rage generation.
Basically what I'm saying is give up on your stat build and experiment! We're not in the past any more!
Apr 3rd 2012 4:25PM The idea is that tanking will involve more than just flailing your attack rotation and hitting your defensive CDs once in a while.
Tis beta, it will work better once we get into the real thing.
