Taking a guild across games {WoW}

Jun 12th 2007 3:05PM I'm the Guildleader of Esoteric Order and have been for 7 years (the entire length of the guild).

I attribute our success to two sets of rules - the public guild rules and my own personal guidelines.

Guild rules:
Have Fun
No Drama
Don't Suck
Be a Team Player

My rules:
Respect Your Members and the Guild Culture
Laugh At Yourself
Control is Bad, Order is Good
I am Responsible for being the custodian of members' time
Listen More Talk Less

Why does the Horde always lose Alterac Valley? {WoW}

Jun 12th 2007 10:51AM I think the main reasons that the horde loses are:

Alliance has more reinforcements available. Alliance has an endless supply of people wanting in AV (or at least did, back when it was level 60 content) Alliance could affort to tell a level 51 to hit the road.

Crappy Defense. Sorry Hordies - you don't play D well at all. If you think the bridge is icky - try charging between those two frostwolf towers when (not an actual guild but a good idea for one) are defending them properly. It makes the bridge look warm and cozy. A lot of times, even when you play D, you play it wrong. Turtling the Relief Hut and Throne Room is a stupid tactic and always loses - you can't stop bubble pulling paladins from getting your warmasters out unscathed - stop trying. Seriously - stop whining about the bridge - what you're really whining is the fact that many alliance players know how to play Defensively.

Finally - Propogation of information. Alliance has more people cycling through winning battlegrounds in AV (much like hordies have with WSG). Winning tactics will be selected-for (like evolution) creating more winners than losers.

Hordies - if you want to win at AV, stop whining and start playing Defense and teaching other people how to do it.

Blizzard banning players in game for forum stupidity? {WoW}

Jun 4th 2007 2:12PM Good Job and Huzzah! to Blizzard!

Keep the sociopaths (which is what most forum trolls are, deep down) away from the human children.

Your own private Azeroth {WoW}

May 30th 2007 1:43PM It is my belief that the MMORPG will never actually be an RPG until it has reliable and innovative user-created content. Emulator servers are an evolutionary tree of MMOs headed in the direction of user-created content.

The best thing SOE could do to compete with WOW right now (in response to this and a thread below) is to release their creation tools and start allowing trickles of user-created content or to start licensing the engine for user-created servers.

Child of the Elements {WoW}

May 29th 2007 10:02AM I think that simplifying it *is* possible if you realize that both sides are made up of many separate races and cultures.

The bulk of the Forsaken and Blood Elf culture is evil by our standards. The Forsaken are actively conspiring to create more undead (de-facto genocide) and the Blood Elves are painfully, brutally decadent.

The only equivalent to the same level of 'evil' on the alliance side are the gnomes. Every behavior exhibited in the quests/lore points towards them being amoral experimenters with no problems with using living subjects, creating mayhem, committing murder and abandoning allies to further their ends.

That said - the game lore supports the dwarf-gnome alliance, but I am still unsure it supports the Night Elves and Humans embracing them. Night Elves look human enough for racist humans to at least consider them to be equals or allies and the dwarves seem eager and loyal enough to support nearly any ally. People point towards the draenei being 'painfully good' but i'd put my money on the dwarves being the real heroes of the piece on the alliance side.

All of that said - the real 'good guys' of WOW are to me the Orcs, Darkspear Trolls and Tauren. The orcish embrace of the warlocks says more 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer' than 'we're still evil.' All three races have entire questlines about honorable and humbling behavior, doing the right thing even if it aids your alleged enemies.

Finally, there is to me no rational, believable reason for the Tauren/Orcs/Trolls to be allied with the Blood Elves or Forsaken.

Starcraft II on WoW's homepage {WoW}

May 21st 2007 3:25PM Calling RTS Blizzard's 'Bread-and-Butter' in a post-WOW environment is like calling boardgames WOTC's bread-and-butter in a post-Magic:the gathering environment.

It is a ludicrous statement.

Blizzards hit-to-miss ratio is amazingly high for a computer game company. I have faith in SC2, but I think they are filling a different niche that only interacts with the wow niche in a very limited way.

Also - if people *are* getting mad about it being on the WOW front page - they're idiots. Self-centered, self-aggrandizing malcontents who really need to learn to live-and-let-live.

Breakfast Topic: How did you learn to PvP? {WoW}

May 18th 2007 8:49AM I learned it from you, dad *sobbing* i learned it from you!

Tracking alts within the guild {WoW}

May 17th 2007 3:04PM Simple management technique that IMO all guilds should use, that will help with this and many other issues:

No anonymous members. Period. The guild gets your real name or you don't get an invite.

Put their name in their note and be done with it. All alts get the same name.

Breakfast Topic: New battlegrounds {WoW}

May 14th 2007 11:35AM Ideas i'd like to see:

Escort PvP - (like TFC Assassin) - one player gets flagged as the 'VIP' randomly on entry - everyone else has to either defend him or kill him.

Random Target missions (mentioned above) - Each side gets 5 buildings - the other side has to destroy one - but you don't know which it is.

I'd like world PvP to change too - allow persons to get quests to attack NPC PvP targets in enemy towns and cities - harder targets for more honor/rewards (like a war of assassins)
