Ask WoW Insider: Are you who you play? {WoW}

Dec 18th 2007 3:42PM There are players who roll imaginary selves and others who roll imaginary others. Those using characters as imaginary selves seem to have a hard time understanding the motivations of those rolling imaginary others. A player with a toon of the opposite gender? Unfathomable! Why would a hetero male want to pretend to be a female? A woman with a male toon? Must be a lesbian! Both male and female toons? Obviously bisexual.

My ten female toons are, to me, others. I have a fatherly, protective attitude toward them. I am incapable of role playing with them. I like the way they look, sound and move. They are actors I direct on the stage WoW has created for me. Alas, those who identify with their characters often find this attitude very hard to understand.

I suspect that women are more likely to view their characters as others than males -- particularly adolescent males. A bit of browsing at WoW Ladies will unearth many different members of that community saying something to the effect of "I have a little and I love to death!". Hard to imagine a 16 year old boy saying the same.

Shifting Perspectives: So you're thinking of playing a Druid {WoW}

Dec 11th 2007 11:56AM A very nice introduction to the druid class. The more I play a druid, the more I like it. Well worth suffering through the awful first 20 levels.

Breakfast Topic: Less money, more problems {WoW}

Dec 5th 2007 2:04PM This thread is rich in ridiculous boasts and outright lies. Soon someone will claim to have 1,000 g banked that was earned before L10.

Those hurting for money are very often those leveling crafting professions or who don't know how to use the AH to sell loot or judiciously buy blues and greens that make a difference. With two gathering professions, a bank alt and some common sense you can buy your mount at L40 and improve your gear with AH purchases.

Never buy anything at the AH? That accounts for the noobs you see running around in greens suitable for those ten levels below them. I don't want those clowns in my instance group. Let them grind mobs five levels below them to advance.

Get all your gear from instance drops? Pure fantasy. If you are lucky you will get a few nice items that should be rounded out with AH purchases.

The key to effective use of the AH is buying gear that is good enough rather than the best that money can buy.

List of 2.3 known issues and bugs {WoW}

Nov 21st 2007 12:17PM What is the difference between an "issue" and a "bug"?

WoW's population hits 9.3 million in Q3 2007 {WoW}

Nov 19th 2007 5:48PM Children at nasty play here, I think. Vivendi's total game division revenues for 2006 were 804 million euros. Profit was about 115 million euros. Blizzard accounted for most of that. Vivendi Universal financial reports are available online. Better to read them instead of making wild guesses about Blizzard's and Vivendi's finances.

Spiritual Guidance: The shadow diaries {WoW}

Nov 19th 2007 11:34AM My BElf pali managed all Ghostlands quests solo except for the final Deatholme one. She teamed up with a lock for that one. It certainly isn't a five-player quest.

I look forward to further posts on leveling a Shadow Priest as mine is L34. Leveling her has not been difficult. PW:S, Mindblast, SW:P, wand, refresh PW:S, wand, loot, yawn.

Officers' Quarters: Zero-pressure raiding? {WoW}

Nov 19th 2007 11:20AM Excellent post!

Breakfast topic: I wish I knew then what I know now {WoW}

Nov 6th 2007 2:04PM If you roll a second toon to serve as a bank alt, pick the same race, class and appearance as your primary and give it a name you dislike. Otherwise, you might end up as I did. I have 8 alts that I am leveling after succumbing to the temptation of playing my latest bank alt for awhile.

Don't blow 50g for an L36 sword you will replace four or five levels later.

Run instances repeatedly as soon as they become available. Try to hit as many as possible on the way up. Don't be shy or hesitant. Most of your PUG members will as clueless as you are. You will learn as you muddle through.

Don't train in a crafting profession until you reach Outland. Skinning/mining for the gold!

Breakfast Topic: Where My Altaholics At? {WoW}

Nov 2nd 2007 12:27PM I have 9 Alliance toons representing all classes. My big problem is leveling them too quickly. Rest bonuses plus 30% more exp from kills and quests will have them leveling about 2.5 times faster than a single toon played regularly. That means 60% or so less loot gathered per level.

I have in the past used my L61 NElf huntress as a cash cow for four alts in their forties, two in their thirties and a newly minted L15 Shaman. That can't go on as I am gearing up my huntress for Hellfire Ramparts and Blood Furnace. I am therefore switching my alts to skinning/mining, skipping quests without attractive gear rewards and concentrating on running instances.
