BlizzCon 2013 contests announced

Need another reason to be excited about BlizzCon? For the creative types out there (or those who just enjoy admiring the work of creative types), Blizzard has released a preview of the contest lineup for BlizzCon this November. And, though full details are to follow (including complete rules, guidelines, eligibility information, and submission details), you can start planning work now.

BlizzCon 2013 Contests
BlizzCon 2013 Art Contest
The Art Contest is coming back! We can't wait to see your always impressive original Blizzard-based artwork. Carpe diem-there's no time like now to dream up your next masterpiece in the hope of having it displayed at BlizzCon (and winning some great prizes).

BlizzCon 2013 Original Movie Contest
We're looking forward to screening another brilliant selection of original films based on Blizzard games. Whether it's live action, animated, wholly digital, or a combination, we can't wait to see what you come up with.

BlizzCon 2013 Costume Contest
The Costume Contest makes a triumphant return! Every BlizzCon, you keep upping the ante for amazing costumes, and we're sure this show will be no exception. As you're contemplating what you'd like to create, keep in mind that your safety is of paramount importance-that means that any costume you plan to wear should be something that you can easily see out of and safely maneuver in without assistance. In addition, no real weapons, dangerous materials, or large motorized costumes will be allowed.

And, while the costume contest is definitely something you need to be at the convention for -- remember, there's another round of ticket sales on Saturday and we have some buying tips for hopeful attendees -- the art and movie contests are online contests.

Enter to win a ticket to BlizzCon 2011 by donating to Child's Play

If you missed your chance to purchase a ticket to BlizzCon 2011 last month, there's still a way to get yourself in the door if you're feeling charitable.

Looking For Group: BlizzCon, a networking site for organizing groups and meetups at BlizzCon 2011, is giving away one ticket to a random member of its website who makes a charitable donation to Child's Play. Child's Play, if you don't recall, is a charity created by the authors of Penny Arcade to give toys and games to kids in children's hospitals.

To enter, all you have to do is join LFG: BlizzCon (it's free) and make a donation to Child's Play by June 30, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. CST. The donation can be for any amount, small or large. To read the complete rules on how to donate for the contest, check out the official contest page.

BlizzCon 2010: Costume contest gallery

The BlizzCon costume contest took place yesterday afternoon with roughly 90 entries (give or take a few, depending on how you count group efforts). We did have a screenshot of one entrant in black that was unfortunately too dark to include, but this is an otherwise comprehensive gallery of all contest entrants, the five finalists and winner. There were a number of extraordinary costumes this year, and we highly recommend giving them a look. However, I think Jay Mohr was correct in observing that it's only a matter of time before someone's going to topple over on digitigrade stilts. Please, folks -- it's okay to suffer for your art, but it's not okay to break your ankles over it!

The five finalists (you'll find them toward the end of the gallery) portrayed Ysera, the female monk from Diablo III, Jaina Proudmoore, the female witch doctor from Diablo III, and Illidan Stormrage. The eventual winner was Christina Estrada as the female monk.

BlizzCon 2010 is upon us! WoW Insider has all the latest news and information. We're bringing you liveblogging of the WoW panels, interviews with WoW celebrities and attendees and of course, lots of pictures of people in costumes. It's all here at WoW Insider!

BlizzCon 2009: Dance and soundalike contest videos

We brought you the video from the costume contest earlier tonight. Now, as requested, here are Turpster's videos of the dance contest (above), and the soundalike contest (after the cut). I have to say, I watched the soundalike contest live, and it was really weird. Some of those contestants are creepily accurate.

BlizzCon 2009: Costume contest video

Last night at BlizzCon featured the string of contests (costume, sound-alike, and dance), hosted by Jay Mohr. The costume contest was pretty spectacular at times, and I don't want to spoil it, but I was definitely rooting for the winner as soon as I saw him or her. Watch the contest above, and enjoy! It's times like this that make me realize what a wonderful community WoW has.

Last two chances to win BlizzCon tickets

A pair of contests popped up on the World of Warcraft official site in the past few days, reminding everyone of a small and closing window to try and get to BlizzCon. One contest, sponsored by Alienware, requires absolutely nothing more than signing up for the DELL newsletter through their Back to School 2009 promo page. That's it. No, seriously, that's it. Of course, it comes with the usual caveat that only allows entries from the United States, but it's a shot at winning BlizzCon tickets without so much as getting up from your comfortable chair. Read the official rules carefully, though, because it doesn't seem like the tickets come with airfare or accommodations (go figure!).

The second contest is run by Nvidia, and it sounds like a sweeter deal because unlike most contests, this one is open to the residents of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, and India (except those guys from Tamil Nadu). Sounds great, right? Well, you also need to purchase one of the following qualifying graphics cards to enter - an NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT, NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT, NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+, or NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250. Considering this contest gives an all-expense paid trip to Anaheim and the fact that you need some mighty graphics to run WoW well anyway, it's not such a bad idea. Otherwise, you can go write that letter. Both contests end on July 31, so you've all got little time to spare. See you at BlizzCon!

Breakfast Topic: BlizzCon contests

BlizzCon is a mere month and a half away, and I can just imagine the excitement building up. With Wrath certain to be released this year, there has got to be some big news about the expansion during the convention. Who among you are going? Better yet, who among you are going and joining a contest? If I actually managed to get tickets to BlizzCon (or at least be in the United States in October...), I would have wanted to join -- alright, maybe just check out -- the costume contest. I know, it sounds silly, but some costumes are actually pretty cool.

For sure, when BlizzCon rolls around, WoW Insider will put up a gallery of the costume contest entrants. But there are contests that don't require you to be at BlizzCon. Quite a few of them are online contests like the poster making, songwriting, and movie-making. Will you be joining any of them? Everybody loves swag, after all. Even if you aren't, what entries are you looking forward to seeing this year?

BlizzCon contests open for submission

If you like winning stuff, you might want to check out BlizzCon and its contests. Whether or not you'll be going to the sold-out event this October, there's something for you to participate in. Obviously, if you're not going, you won't be able to join staples like the costume contest or the impressive (and often hilarious) dance contest, but most of the BlizzCon contests can be joined online.

If you think you've got the chops for stuff like making movies, ace graphic design skills to make motivational posters, or even songwriting skills and making dioramas, then head over to the BlizzCon contest page and read about how to submit your entries. Unfortunately, if you think you're a funny guy (or gal), Blizzard wants to see you in person.
