The Queue: Raid goes up, boss goes down

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.

I was going to follow up Adam's cute cat picture with a picture of my own pets, but since my landlord doesn't let me have any, I figure you're not interested in pictures of my roomba. It's quite cute in person, but unfortunately it comes across as a bit lifeless in pictures. It's a bit camera shy.

Officers' Quarters: Topping the charts

Every Monday Scott Andrews contributes
Officers' Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership.

According to wowjutsu.com, more than 25,000 guilds in the world are better than mine. That's rather disheartening in an objective sense, but I also have no idea how they get their info or determine these ranks. (The info also appears to be a bit outdated.) Despite our abject failure in the rankings, somehow we seem to be doing just fine. We're adding new recruits at a steady pace, raiding frequently and successfully, and having plenty of fun doing it. So 25,000 is a large number, but it's just a number. Does your guild care about their worldwide rankings? This week's e-mail comes from a frustrated raider who thinks his officers put too much emphasis on climbing up the ranks.

Dear Scott,

I've had a few issues with members in my guild lately that I feel put too much importance on guild rankings. I'm sure you are aware of the sites like
www.bosskillers.com and www.wowjutsu.com. I see these sites as sources of controversy, others see them as a sense of where they stand on the realm and in WoW in general. We have officers trying to push our guild into doing fights, EoE 25, when we haven't even done EoE 10 yet. Naxx is still a constant wipe fest, with many of the easier achievements not yet complete for a majority of the guild. We have a lot of under geared people that still run around in Heroic and SSC, yes SSC, gear but that doesn't matter to them. We beat Kel'Thuzad one time so we are ready in their eyes. We would leave bosses up in Naxx so we could go spend the night wiping and never be able to get around to getting a full Naxx clear.

Hunter's Mark tells you how to know it all (without knowing it all)

Hunter's Mark has a terrific series up that's a great resource for anyone playing this game, not just Hunters. It's called "Being a Know-it-all Without Knowing it All," and if you've ever wondered where to go, what to do, or how to make your character better, reading through the series will give you access to pretty much every tool available online to figure out what's what.

None of it is really new (it's definitely not news that Wowhead and Thottbot exist), and if you read our little site frequently, you're probably very familiar with what all these resources have to offer (we're pretty thorough like that). But if you know someone who's looking for a little more insight on the game, or want a general overview of everything that's available and what each site can offer you, this is it. From the Loot Lists to Bosskillers, tons of information about everything you need to know in World of Warcraft is online, and the Know-it-all series is a great overview of what's what.

More raid boss strat guides than you can throw a ret pally at

Raiding is a coordinated dance of precision, strategy and not having anyone go afk unannounced. Not that I have done that. Ever. No, really. Ok, that one time, but it's not like we couldn't recover from the wipe in time to try again, right?

Anyway, the first time you attempt a raid boss, it's great fun seeing what the event has in store for you. But after that first time, it's incredibly irritating to wipe out time and again. There are strat guides for boss kills here and there about the Internet, but I found one site that collects them all in one place.

For every raid target in the game, BossKillers.com presents strat guides three different ways: they have an extensive strat guide written for their site; they have links to other popular strat guides for that boss; and they also have links to kill movies for each boss. For their own guide, it covers each phase of the fight including diagrams showing player placement, class roles with notes for different specs and gear requirements along with recommended buffs and consumables. If you don't agree with the strat, check out the many others they link to. Still having a problem visualizing the fight? Click on the many movie links they offer.

So next time you get ready to raid, you'll have no excuse to be unprepared for the big fight. If no one went afk unannounced.
