Two Bosses Enter: Ymiron moves on; Eregos and Loken rematch

Two Bosses Enter ... but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com's series of fantasy death matches. We're moving from the quarter-finals into the semi-finals of the Original Five-Man Wrath of the Lich King season. Grab a seat, and let's get ready to rumble!

This week, the Original Five-Man Wrath of the Lich King season of Two Bosses Enter moves into the semi-finals with a repeat match: Ley-Guardian Eregos versus Loken. If you believe voters cheated Loken out of his last victory against the Ley-Guardian based on their distaste for Eregos and The Oculus, now's your chance to set things right!

In last week's final quarter-finals battle, King Ymiron demonstrated the power behind his throne with a decisive Thunderdome victory over Krik'thir the Gatewatcher. More than 64 percent of the crowd roared its support for the King, while just shy of one-third believed Krik'thir could hold his own. Here's a sampling of the debate from the stands:

Dreamstorm: This is one complicated fight. I'm going to wait with voting until I read what others think and why.

Qot: Two Bosses Enter is sort of like the NBA All-Star voting. The people decide, but they usually decide based on reputation or history rather than actual skill. Xevozz was perfectly tuned to kill Loken, but Loken's a BAMF in the lore, so he wins the match.

Dreamstorm: If the king wins, we'll have ourselves a Nerubian, a Vrykul, a blue dragon and a creation of the Titans ... PIT FIGHT!! :D

Eddy: I was kind of thinking that. I feel like I'm biased towards King because then the fights would just seem so balanced -- the end bosses from a number of lore-intensive instances. I feel like the lore supports the king's victory.

Two Bosses Enter: Loken slips past Xevozz, Ymiron battles Krik'thir

Two Bosses Enter ... but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com's series of fantasy death matches. Welcome to the quarter-finals of the Original Five-Man Wrath of the Lich King season. Grab a seat, and let's get ready to rumble!

When the magical energies had died down, it was indeed Loken who remained standing in last week's Thunderdome matchup against Xevozz. The Dark Titan fought for every vote, claiming his victory with 52% spectator approval. We'll review how things went down after the break, plus you'll get a chance to vote in the last quarter-finals match of the season: Ymiron versus Krik'thir.

One Boss Leaves: Krik'thir flays Gortok Palehoof

Two Bosses Enter ... but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com's series of fantasy death matches. This season's combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King.

Gortok Palehoof got the raw end of the deal inside the Two Bosses Thunderdome this week, as his one-minion-at-a-time strategy folded under the onslaught of Krik'thir the Gatewatcher's slice-and-dice minions. The outcome was decisive: 58 percent for the Nerubian, and only 36 percent for the Magnataur. Quite a few spectators thought the outcome would have been different if Palehoof had been allowed to deploy his entire collection at once – but alas, in keeping the fight structure reasonably close to what players experience, it was not to be.

Vodkamartini: Dear WoW.com,

I want to thank you for setting the rules in my favor. With my team able to take on my opponent's lackeys one at a time, it was a simple slaughter. I can't remember if it was the idiot furbolg or the worm (A WORM? WHO BRINGS THE BOTTOM OF THE FOOD CHAIN TO A FIGHT?) that aggroed the entire room, but it went quite quickly after that. Watcher Narjil believed the opposing group, with one attacking in hopes of the Watch Him Die achievement, while the rest stupidly stood there, too busy to contemplate imminent slaughter or arguing over who gets my Golden Limb Bands, may have been in what the humanoids call a "Leeroy Jenkins moment." It does not matter; they were foolish to come.

Two Bosses Enter: Gortok Palehoof vs. Krik'thir the Gatewatcher

Two Bosses Enter ... but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com's series of fantasy death matches. This season's combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King.

We've got adds here, people: it's Gortok Palehoof (Utgarde Pinnacle) versus Krik'thir the Gatewatcher (Azjol-Nerub). Gortok steps into the Thunderdome fresh from a resounding defeat of Lavanthor, while Krik'thir arrives after besting the Commander Stoutbeard/Kolurg from The Nexus.

Let's review the ground rules:
  • Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools and comparative overall damage output.
  • New clarification: All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents.
  • This deathmatch takes place in neutral territory, which shall in no way hinder either opponent from using his usual resources.
  • Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
  • Don't neglect style, story and scale.
Let the doors open, and let the contestants come forward. As Dr. Dealgood would say: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls ... Dyin' time's here.

One Boss Leaves: Krik'thir edges the Commanders

Two Bosses Enter ... but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com's series of fantasy death matches. Welcome to Round Two of the five-man Wrath of the Lich King season. Grab a seat, and let's get ready to rumble!

You're going to be kicking yourself if you didn't vote last week but believe Commander Stoutbeard (or Kolurg) should have defeated Krik'thir the Gatewatcher in the Two Bosses Thunderdome. The Gatewatcher scuttled past the Commanders to victory with a margin of less than 4% - a smaller number of readers than those who voted for a tie/uncertain decision.

Nathan: Really, the fight all comes down to which of the two commanders ends up fighting Krik'thir. If the battle comes down to a Dwarf Warrior versus a giant overgrown spider ... well, Dwarves are way more awesome. An Orc, on the other hand, while awesome in his own way, would simply not have what it takes to defeat Krik'thir and his minions. Here's how it would go down if it's Commander Stoutbeard doing the fighting:

Commander Stoutbeard and his posse encounter Krik'thir and his spiders; Krik'thir and his first group of minions immediately attack, but Stoutbeard quickly Whirlwinds Krik'thir's minions to death while being healed by his Priests, keeping him from taking serious damage.

Puzzled at his small enemy's resistance to damage, Krik'thir draws back in momentary puzzlement and to summon another group of minions into the fight. Taking advantage of the momentary respite, Stoutbeard challenges the spider to a drinking contest; the spider at first refuses, but Stoutbeard loudly mocks the spider, calling him a coward and insulting his mother. Krik'thir, embarrassed at being mocked in front of his remaining minions, accepts the challenge.

Two Bosses Enter: The Commanders vs. Krik'thir the Gatewatcher

Two Bosses Enter ... but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com's series of fantasy death matches. Welcome to Round Two of the five-man Wrath of the Lich King season. Grab a seat, and let's get ready to rumble!

Here's a nasty melee match for this week's Two Bosses Thunderdome: Commander Kolurg/Stoutbeard of The Nexus versus Krik'thir the Gatewatcher from Azjol-Nerub. You may want to wear a splatter guard if you're sitting near the fence on this one - we can only imagine the carnage as the Commander's Whirlwind makes contact with Krik'thir's minions.

The ground rules:
  • Assume that the opponents and any minions share similar levels, health pools and comparative overall damage output.
  • This deathmatch takes place in neutral territory, which shall not hinder either boss from using his usual encounter abilities.
  • All the usual minions will be available to each boss.
  • Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
  • Don't neglect style, story and scale.
