WoW Insider Show Episode 48: We just can't wait for Lich King

Our latest podcast is now up for your listening enjoyment, but beware: there's an aural bomb hidden inside it -- as we suggested last week, if you listen to the show, you just may hear not only Turpster's famous singing voice, but mine and John Patricelli's as well. Please note: WoW Insider can not be held responsible for any trauma caused by hearing our "Just Can't Wait for Lich King" song. It is scary.
  • We also chatted about achievements and why I can't wait for them. And I forgot to mention: the best thing about achievements? Blizzard is giving us another ding graphic for them, this time white! I love that graphic!
  • We talked about the Authenticator, and how it's not quite as secure as everything thought.
  • We all agreed that the mounts and small pets getting out of our bags was a great change.
  • Turpster told us about his experience playing the Wrath beta so far and what he thinks of Death Knights and the new zones.
  • And we answered a lot of emails: we talked about /played time and why it shouldn't be completely embarrassing, and why raiding isn't quite yet done before the next expansion.
Oh, and we did give away a beta key, direct from Turpster's goodie bag at WWI. We've selected a winner in our contest already, so if you didn't enter, time is up (that's why we said to listen to the show last week!), and if you did enter, check your email.

And finally, Turpster has not yet posted the mp3 of our song (though I'm not sure why you'd want to listen to it any more than you have to), but dotOrion on the WoW Radio forums has cut it directly out of the podcast recording, so if you really want an MP3 of the tune (for blackmail purposes or anything else you need it for), there you go.

15 Minutes of Fame: WoW's new wave of new gamers

15 Minutes of Fame is our look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes – from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you'd like to hear more about at 15minutesoffame (at) wowinsider (dot) com.

When I received a news tip from from Rainnajax of US Uldaman-H about being an "older female gamer," I admit that I rolled my eyes. Please, not another one who thinks having two X chromosomes makes her the most special snowflake ... Not another one who thinks being over 30 years old qualifies her as one of the Ancients ... When I read her entire email, though, I realized Rainnajax's experience was actually intriguing – but not for the reasons she thought.

While Rainnajax may perceive herself as something still a little unusual among WoW players, I see her as the type of player who's becoming the new norm. She's less remarkable for being female or "older" – or even for belonging to a well known gay and bi-friendly guild -- than she is for being among the new wave of players who'd never imagined themselves playing a video game ... until they tried WoW. MMORPGs are no longer the province of a single type of player anymore. Rainnajax is here as an example of today's new-to-gaming, non-gender- or age-specific player.

15 Minutes of Fame: ORLY warrior made of win and wooden shoes

15 Minutes of Fame is our look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes – both the renowned and the relatively anonymous.

In the course of interviewing WoW players from the mainstream to the niche and from the casual to the hardcore, 15 Minutes of Fame has developed an intriguing little theory: players who confess to being "obsessed" with WoW actually have a pretty down-to-earth approach to the game. Oh, they love WoW, it's true, and devote hours and hours to it on a regular basis. But it seems that the players who profess their love for the game the loudest have given themselves permission to indulge in WoW as a hobby. While they dive into the game and related activities with complete abandon, they also seem to recognize that it's merely one part of their lives (albeit a fairly big one). In a nutshell, these aren't your fabled antisocial basement geeks; in fact, we find they tend to be downright warm, funny folks with a lot of interesting ideas and activities on their plates.

Take Kooz, the main tank of Fractured on Euro realm Bloodscalp and one of the creators of the O'RLY Show (seen at WoW Radio, along with the WoW Insider Show). Kooz's energy virtually leaps off the page, even long distance from The Netherlands – he's a fun guy to talk to who sounds as if he's building himself a fun life centered around his passion for gaming.

WoW Insider Show Episode 13: Review of every patch from 1.2 to 2.3

Though we had a long list of news items from the past week to cover on Saturday's podcast, we threw it all out the window. Instead we honored WoW's 3rd Anniversary by covering every patch since launch. Relive three years of new content additions, class revamps and expansion mudflation with me, Krystalle Voecks and Turpster.

This special podcast had to run an extra 30 minutes for a grand total of an hour and a half in order to get through all the patches!

We also snuck in a quick discussion about the Shatner and Mr. T WoW commercials. Krystalle adds in her own Top 5 list of celebrities she feels should star in future WoW commercials and what race/class they should play. I don't think anyone disagreed with her number one pick (hint: not Chuck Norris.)

If you missed the live podcast, you can now hear it stream on WoW Radio's site. Join us this Saturday for another live episode covering all the hot issues in our beloved World of Warcraft.

WoW Insider Show Episode 12: Patch 2.3 and beyond!

Did you miss this weekend's episode of the WoW Insider Show on WoW Radio? Never fear, because it's now available for download or streaming at your convenience from WoW Radio or iTunes. Tune in to catch Elizabeth Harper, Matt Rossi, and Turpster chatting about the recent patch 2.3 release, changes to Blizzard's Warden application, the Shaman tier 6 fiasco, guild divas, and the creepy new music in Karazhan. We wondered why new music seemed to be randomly added to the game and Blizzard answered us via e-mail, stating:

...due to the size of music files, we sometimes need to add It in intervals. We have had plenty of music waiting to be added in, but need to be very careful about the file sizes we keep the patches at.

So for those of you enjoying Karazhan's hot new soundtrack, it sounds like Blizzard has more musical treats in store for us in the future!

Four endgame guilds on WoW Radio today

Our friend Totalbiscuit of WoW Radio sends word to remind us that today at 2 pm EST (in just about an hour and a half from now), he'll be hosting a roundtable with members of Nihilum, Death and Taxes, Forte and Method-- in other words, pretty much every endgame guild that matters. I guess he could probably go for Curse as well, but "Four Horsemen" just sounds better.

On the menu is supposed to be "all aspects of the endgame," so it'll be interesting to see what gets talked about. Expect to hear about what they thought of the Black Temple and the attunements being lifted from the Eye and SSC, and TB would probably be remiss if he didn't ask what they think is coming next (even though no one but Blizzard has anything but speculation about that right now, probably until Blizzcon). But nevertheless, WoW Radio always does a good interview, and this should be a good listen for sure.
