Forum post of the day: I don't see any ads

I don't have to say that folks are annoyed with Blizzard's new advertisements on the official forums. The forums today are filled with threads complaining about everything from their presence to their content. Lure of Eradar suggested using Adblock Plus and Remove It Permanantly in Firefox to ditch the ads.

After loading the first addon, you must subscribe to a list appropriate to your region. The second addon gets rid of the grey frame left where the ad was. The original poster gave us handy dandy instructions on how to use it:
  • Load a random thread on the WoW forums, any will do. See that annoying grey frame?
  • Right click on the frame.
  • Go to RIP Advanced.
  • First choose "Remove from this Domain"
  • Go to RIP Advanced again, Next click "Remove all similar parent items."

The entire process took less than three minutes and my forums look just like they did before. For the most part we should be used to online advertising. You can just ignore them, but if you're really that annoyed by it do something about it. I also won't hear the objection that you don't use Firefox. You should. I'd check into how to remove ads for IE, but I'm not willing to load Exploder on either of my computers.

Thanks to Lure and everyone else who offered similar simple solutions. If only there were an addon to block the trolls, we'd be all set.

Death is in the air for gold sellers

What smells like dead Orcs and flies? Goldseller spam in Orgrimmar. In the last few weeks it has been dead Gnomes in Ironforge. The dead bodies spell out the name of a gold selling website. This tactic has returned from about a year or so ago, but this is the first time I've heard of it in Orgrimmar. The body advertisements look sharper than the old versions. All in all it seems like an awful lot of work to get around spam filters.

Gold sellers have used several means to get their message out to the public, and Blizzard has found ways to combat it. I remember back in the day when we used to get spammed with whispers. Blizzard introduced the report spam feature for users to flag this content, the whispers nearly completely ceased overnight. I have to hand it to them, the gold sellers come up with innovative ways to market their product. Sure it violates the terms of use, but gold-selling by its nature is a violation. What's one more script here and there for them?

Breakfast Topic: Who is going to Paris?

Blizzard's 2008 Worldwide Invitational is coming up in a couple of weeks. It looks like they've got a series of interesting events planned including, signings, and even a sneak peek at Wrath of the Lich King. I'm exciting to see how the best of the best fare in the arena tournaments. Blizzard is also touting competitive events for causal players.

Some of the contests are already underway. Blizzard is accepting submissions for the WWI Machinima and TV advertisement contests are currently open. They will be accepting 4-minute movie and 40-second ad submissions until June 16th. The time frame is the same for the Fan Art Contest, which can feature any of the Blizzard game universes.

I think it would be pretty awesome to go. Sadly, a trip to Paris is a wee bit out of my budget this much. I'll be anxiously awaiting news and information from the attendees. So now it's time to rub it in. Who's going to WWI?

WoW Moviewatch: Alt-Aholic

Matt, from The Blue Report, has a different take on the WoW commercial parodies. The tone of the spoof is a bit off, but the message is still the same.

In the video, he brings up the important topic of alts. Why should you have just one character when you can do it all? If I had the time to level all those alts, I'd be right there with you!

WoW Moviewatch: Belated pimp parody of WoW commercials

Parodies of the WoW commercials featuring William Shatner, Mr. T, Jean Claude van Damme, Verne Troyer, and Willy Toledo are so last month. Apparently Ari Rosenberg didn't get the memo. Viewers be warned that this does contain some offensive language.

It's true that you can be anyone you want to be on the internet. In Ari's world, he's a night elf pimp. I wonder if his mom knows he's slapping around his sister on YouTube?

(Edit: Ari decided to add "What's your game?" to the ending, so he re-uploaded the video.)

Je suis un mage

Jean-Claude Van Damme's French "What's Your Game" commercial, promised a few days ago, has gone live, and I rather like it. He is, apparently, a troll mage; he's put his physical combat days behind him. My French is a bit rusty, but I can catch most of it, and for the rest, Blizzard has kindly provided an English translation:

World of Warcraft on the tee-vee

As I am the proud owner of a TiVo, I have a tendency to fast forward through all commercial interruptions. However, this scene from the movie Office Space caught my eye -- after all, it's not a new movie by any means, so what could it be advertising? Imagine my surprise when I went back to watch it and found it to be a World of Warcraft commercial!

Azeroth Ad Contest

WarcraftCinema.com is holding a contest calling for Warcraft video-makers to create 30 second video advertisements related to the game.  If that leaves you confused, they provide some examples of what they're looking for:
  • Horde Enlistment Bonuses, Join Today!. "An Army of One."
  • Take a taste of "Auntie" Bernice Stonefield's mouth-watering Pork Belly Pie. "Now with zero calories!"
  • Enjoy delicious, soothing Noggenfogger. "Because you only live once."
So if you have any talent with this sort of thing, get to it - because the rest of us are waiting to be entertained by the results.

Chinese WoW Advertisement

While this video isn't new, I just ran across it today.  It's a Chinese advertisement for World of Warcraft and Coke.  And I think I'll leave the conclusions to you...
