Every Thursday, Shelbi Roach of The Bronze Kettle guides you in creating WoW-inspired crafts using real world mats with World of WarCrafts.

With Wrath looming over the horizon, the instances we currently spend all of our time inwill become obsolete. The dusty halls of Karazhan will be forgotten and we will never have another chance at obtaining an Amani War Bear.

So, here's your chance to commemorate the good times with your fellow guildies and spruce up your WoWspace.

Ready Check: Mother Shahraz

Ready Check is a weekly column focusing on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, ZA or Sunwell Plateau, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses. This week, it's all about shadow.

Six down, three to go. Our next Black Temple boss guide looks at a lady with more arms than should be strictly comfortable, Mother Shahraz.

Upon killing the last of the previous three bosses, which can be killed in any order -- Teron Gorefiend, the Reliquary of Souls and Gurtogg Bloodboil -- you'll see a message indicating that the door to the Den of Mortal Delights has been opened. This means it's time to pay a visit to Mother, although you don't need to iron your shirt for this particular drop-in.

What you will need, however, is shadow resistance -- and lots of it. The encounter is primarily resistance-based, and requires the epic craftable shadow resistance gear. This in turn requires Hearts of Darkness, which drop from Black Temple (and occasionally Hyjal) trash, so if you've blazed through the instance so far, chances are you won't have enough to kit out your raid group.

Moving on

There comes a point where you move past content. There's no reason to go back to it other than nostalgia, or for the off chance on a slow night that the one really awesome drop that particular boss has might finally drop. It's a fact of the endgame... you work, you put in the wipes, you stock up on food, buff pots, elixirs, flasks, and other consumables, you go in over and over again and struggle and finally get the boss down... and then in a month or two it's trivial and you're sick to death of the sight of him or her. Another month and you're saying "Does anyone really need any Vashj drops anymore?" and a month after that, you're done with the instance.

This is fine, and it's part of the moving on process with content: if you're regularly farming M'uru you probably don't need anything off of Mother Shahraz anymore except for maybe bad luck on shoulders. Some guilds were fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to be completely done with Black Temple and Hyjal well in advance of Sunwell Plateau. Others are just now finishing up with Gruul and Magtheridon and preparing to move into SSC and Tempest Keep, while still others are just now done with those.

Continuing our jaunt through Black Temple, this week's Ready Check looks at the Reliquary of Souls, also known as the Essence of Souls (RoS or EoS for short). How often is it you get to fight three oversized faces joined together? Savour this opportunity now...

You'll encounter RoS by making your way through Black Temple, usually after either Teron Gorefiend or Gurtogg Bloodboil, depending on how your guild prefers to do things. Let's take a look at the fight.

Ready Check: Teron Gorefiend

Teron Gorefiend is usually the fourth boss players face in Black Temple and is really the first one to prove difficult in any way. While guilds new to the attunement-free Black Temple might have breezed their way through High Warlord Naj'entus, Supremus and the Shade of Akama, we're seeing many run into a standstill when they face Teron. Even those clearing Black Temple for the first time last year had some difficulty on the fight, so this Ready Check aims to look more closely at the fight and help out raiders who might be stuck on it even today.

You first encounter Teron Gorefiend in Shadowmoon Valley, during the popular 'Spectrecles' questline. We won't spoil the quests for those who might not have done them, but suffice it to say Teron is now un-alive and well in Black Temple. To get to him from the Shade of Akama, wait for the Ashtongue mobs to turn neutral ('Hail Akama!' yells ring out), return to the courtyard where you fought trash prior to Akama and go right. A repair, reagent and rep vendor is unlocked at the back of the courtyard, if you detour, otherwise continue through to a flight of stairs and some Shadowmoon Champions plus friends.

Gorefiend's trash isn't too tricky and can be done with two tanks and CC, although be careful of patrols and adds. When you're done with these mobs you'll find yourselves standing in a room with Teron alone on a platform at the other end. Ready for some fun? Let's take a look at what he does.

Forum post of the Day: So you're off to BT/Hyjal

Fear not, brave raiders who have been stuck on Kael and Vashj! In 2.4, you'll be able to walk into Black Temple and Mount Hyjal without having to kill the pain-in-the-tuchus prerequisite bosses to get attuned. To assist you in exploring these untamed lands, Gragnarth of <Simple Math> on Andorhal has created a quick guide to all the BT/Hyjal bosses. Corrected-for-spelling highlights include:

  • Archimonde: "A great way to prepare your guild for this encounter is to have all your guildies meet up in real life and kick each other in the balls repeatedly until they break down and cry."
  • Rage Winterchill: "After 8 waves of slaying exciting and dynamic pacing mechanisms, you will do battle with Rage Winterchill, who you may have met before in your adventures to Scholomance. He hits nearly as hard as the guy in Scholomance, so make sure you have at least 1 person Bandaging the Main Tank every minute."
  • The Black Temple: "Black Temple is the home of Illidan, he is in a guild called <The Betrayer> ... While waiting for your raid to form, you can play the exciting game of repeatedly aggroing Doomwalker on a flying mount, causing him to yell at the entire zone. The lvl 68's nearby will either threaten to report for for spamming in general chat or send you whispers asking to join your Doomwalker raid. Both should provide suitable entertainment while you wait for people to hearth and come back because they forgot their SR neck."
  • Illidari Council: "All throughout your World Of Warcraft raiding career, you have been preparing for this fight. From Magmadar to Magtheridon, Ragnaros to Rage Winterchill, you have learned not to stand in bad things. Well, my friends, it's time for all that experience to pay off because Illidari Council is the SUPER BOWL OF NOT STANDING IN THINGS! This fight has so many things not to stand in including: Concencrate, Blizzard, Flamestrike, the general area around the mage guy and much much more."
  • Illidan loots: "Congratulations on your double vanquisher, healing cloak with spellhaste, felhunter on a stick and leather bracer pattern. You are also guaranteed to get a warglaive of azzinoth, unless someone in the raid deserves one ... and always remember that all your accomplishments mean nothing because they are MONTHS BEHIND."

Is Illidan bad or simply misunderstood?

You can find all kinds of things on the forums. For instance, you can find a forum thread about Illidan. Back and forth the debate goes: does killing Illidan free him from his demonic taint or, well, just kill him? Will he come back or not? Is Maiev kind of a jerk? Bornakk weighs in on page two and continues to post throughout, which to be honest is what I like to see in a blue poster.

The debate on whether Illidan was a hero to his people, a misguided power-hungry ambitious sort, or even out and out evil is interesting on its own, but what really interests me is to see this level of back and forth, even if Bornakk doesn't really say a lot in his replies. It may just be the lore geek in me talking, but I'd really like to take Chris Metzen out for a beer and talk turkey about Illidan, Arthas and the storyline in WCIII. How is it going to manifest in WotLK, did it work out in TBC the way they wanted? Might we see Illidan again or is he definitively dead on the floor of Karabor? Does Maiev have any purpose to her life now? This kind of stuff fascinates me, and clearly it does some other folks as well given the back and forth of this thread.

What about you? Could you care less about lore? Do you want to see Illidan again? Was he a basically good but flawed hero or an out and out villain or both?

New site tracks guild raid progression

WoW Jutsu StatisticsTracking guild raid progression has always been tricky business. Every realm has to have a dedicated player usually kept an updated thread on their server forum and relied on guilds reporting their most recent activities. If that player stopped playing, then it had to be started all over again.

WoW Jutsu has an automated solution. This site tracks raid progression by scouring the Armory for players with equipped raid drops. It accounts for players with raid equipment who move guilds, but can't account for joint raids, yet. Not a perfect system, but a usable one for automating an otherwise time-consuming process.

The site is well designed with a clean look (important for an information site.) On it, you can track by realm or see game-wide statistics. The owner also provided a well-written FAQ explaining how the rankings are compiled and what to do if you feel your guild's listing is inaccurate.

WoW Justu is also good for seeing how much raid content has been finished world wide. For example, less than 2% of the guilds tracked have entered the Black Temple, but almost 66% have finished Karazhan. It will be interesting to see how much raid content is finished before the Wrath of the Lich King expansion goes live and another set of content becomes obsolete.

Blizzard interviews Nihilum at Leipzig

Arena play on big screenIn the last four days, we've reported on interviews with Lead Designer Jeff Kaplan at the European Game Conference going on currently in Leipzig, Germany. So far he has dropped many new bits of information about the Wrath of the Lich King and some new patch content coming before that.

Turns out, Blizzard is reporting on its own activities at Leipzig on its official European page. In addition to the Wrath and Starcraft II demo stations, Blizzard hosted the demise of Illidan Stormrage. Uberguild Nihilum performed a Black Temple raid live at the Blizzard booth in front of 5,000 spectators. Afterwards, Blizzard gave away the keyboards signed by members of Nihilum to the crowd. With the convention wrapping up today, we'll have to start looking elsewhere for more news on the upcoming expansion.

Four endgame guilds on WoW Radio today

Our friend Totalbiscuit of WoW Radio sends word to remind us that today at 2 pm EST (in just about an hour and a half from now), he'll be hosting a roundtable with members of Nihilum, Death and Taxes, Forte and Method-- in other words, pretty much every endgame guild that matters. I guess he could probably go for Curse as well, but "Four Horsemen" just sounds better.

On the menu is supposed to be "all aspects of the endgame," so it'll be interesting to see what gets talked about. Expect to hear about what they thought of the Black Temple and the attunements being lifted from the Eye and SSC, and TB would probably be remiss if he didn't ask what they think is coming next (even though no one but Blizzard has anything but speculation about that right now, probably until Blizzcon). But nevertheless, WoW Radio always does a good interview, and this should be a good listen for sure.

First US Illidan kill

US guild Death and Taxes has managed to snag the US-first Illidan kill and thus finish all available raid content in the game. Their US-first puts them world-sixth, behind European guilds Nihilum, Forte, Last Resort, Curse, and For the Horde. So I'm thinking the process has to go something like this....
  1. Kill Illidan
  2. Farm status
  3. ....
  4. Profit!
Regardless of what step three may be, I'd like to congratulation Death and Taxes on their accomplishment!

Warglaive of Azzinoth dropped

Previously thought to be a mere rumor, or possibly used in the Illidan fight (like the many legendaries used in the Kael'thas fight), Forte (A-Kazzak-EU) have looted the first drop of the (right) Warglaive of Azzinoth, from their world-third kill of Illidan. Here's the lowdown on the weapon:
  • Name: Warglaive of Azzinoth
  • Type: Legendary main-hand sword
  • Damage/Speed: 214–398/2.80 (109.3 dps)
  • Abilities:
    • +22 Agility
    • +22 Stamina
    • Classes: Warrior, Rogue
    • Equip: improves hit rating by 21
    • Equip: improves attack power by 44
  • Set: The Twin Blades of Azzinoth
    • (2) Set: Your melee attacks have a chance to increase your haste rating by 450 for 10 sec.
    • (2) Set: Increases your attack power by 200 when fighting Demons
It has an ilvl of 156, and sells for (apparently) 24.3g. The other weapon in the set is also called the Warglaive of Azzinoth, and you can see its details here. It's a safe bet that it drops from Illidan as well. This is, to my knowledge, the first take-away legendary anyone's gotten in BC. The Twin Blades of Azzinoth are, of course, Illidan's own weapons.

WoW Moviewatch: Nihilum vs. Illidan

You've seen the screenshots. You've debated the impact. Now, you can watch the movie. All 711mbs and 21 minutes of it. It's the world first kill of the bad boy of Patch 2.1, Illidan Stormrage of the Black Temple by European raiders extraordinaire Nihilum.

I'm grateful that Nihilum took the time and resources to record this event and make it available to those of us who will never see this content, but 21 minutes? How about a highlight reel? In fact, how about a highlight reel of all the bosses in 2.1 they smacked down cut down to, oh say, 2-3 minutes? Anyone got one of those coming down the pike?

WoW Moviewatch: Nihilum vs. Essence of Souls

I don't care how you feel about Nihilum as a guild, this looks like a great fight. Props to the art folks at Blizz for the animations; this is definitely the coolest-looking boss I've seen in a while. One warning, though: the video is rather long. Blizz increases difficulty of Hyjal and Black Temple

Daelo, Blizzard's lead encounter designer, posted today on the forums that they had decided to ramp up the damage of six bosses in Hyjal and Black Temple: Gurtogg Bloodboil, Teron Gorefiend, Mother Shahraz, The Illidari Council, Illidan Stormrage and Archimonde. This contradicts Tigole's earlier statements that the raid game was where they wanted it to be.

Daelo also said, "Our intent is not to make the encounters impossible. Even with the increased difficulty, I do expect some of them to be quickly beaten again after guilds experience the changes and adapt." But it's hard to see this as anything other than a slowdown of progression for high-end guilds. There's some discussion about this on the Elitist Jerks forums.
