The guessing games are over: Blizzard has just announced that Patch 5.3: Escalation will be released this coming week. That makes launch day Tuesday, May 21st for Australian and North American realms and Wednesday, May 22nd for European realms.

If you're not aware, patch 5.3 has a bundle of new content, including new story elements, PvP changes, a new battleground, new scenarios and heroic scenarios, and a lot more. Find the full patch notes after the break.

Yesterday, we asked you what your best guess was for the arrival date of patch 5.3, and at the time the article was written, the PTR build was still a test. Since then, it has been updated, as many commenters mentioned, and is now a release candidate.

What does this mean for a potential release date? Looking back at patch 5.1, WoW Insider reported that a release candidate was live on November 13th, and the patch released on November 27th, a fortnight after the first release candidate went up. Patch 5.2 went to a PTR release candidate on the PTR on February 26th, and the patch dropped on March 5th, just one week later. We can't really discuss earlier patches, thanks to Blizzard's new, improved patch cycle, but these two indicate that the patch may well drop within the next fortnight, so May 21st or 28th, perhaps the first week in June at the latest.

Of course, this is just estimation, we're doing research and gathering clues, but it's not a firm confirmation. While you're waiting, you can check out all our patch 5.3 coverage.

The latest sets of PTR patch notes materialized a few hours ago, mostly featuring a multitude of class changes.

Some reasonable nerfs to hunter pet CC, several abilities have had their cooldowns doubled.

Some changes to the interaction of Tricks of the Trade with Blood DK abilities

A buff to Necrotic Strike's attack power scaling

A PvP-related change to Incanter's Ward, halving the effect but doubling the duration, as has been recently discussed the devs think this might be a part of their burst issues in PvP.

And lastly, Eye of the Black Prince can now be used to apply a prismatic socket on Reborn weapons. Hit the break for the full notes.
Continue reading Patch 5.3 PTR Patch Notes for May 14

Patch 5.3 PTR Patch Notes for May 14 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 14 May 2013 17:00:00 EST. For those of you planning to attend BlizzCon 2013, Blizzard has posted a friendly reminder on its community sites that ticket information needs to be finalized by Tuesday, May 14 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. That's tomorrow night, so get to it if you haven't already done so.

The names to be printed on the badges.

Battle.net account names for the pre-show online merchandise sale for BlizzCon ticket holders-more details to come. (Please note that only registered accounts will be able to access this pre-show sale.)

Optional game information such as World of Warcraft character, realm, clan, and BattleTag.

If this information hasn't been entered by May 14, all badges will default to the name on the purchaser's Battle.net account. Don't miss the opportunity to customize your badges!
For more info, check out the Badge Information page.

Head to your Order History within Battle.net account management to edit attendee information before it's too late!
This information is particularly important if you're getting your ticket through a friend or family member. If the name on your ticket does not match the name on your photo ID, you will not be able to pick up your badge on your own. That, and if you don't select your franchise preferences, you might end up with a Diablo III badge instead of a World of Warcraft one. You wouldn't want that, would you?

Update: The livestream is now over, but you can check out the Video on Demand above! The final game is very much worth sticking around for, really captures the excitement of Hearthstone. We hope to see more of these in future!

If you're as excited about Hearthstone as we are here at WoW Insider, you'll want to check out the above stream, as Hearthstone Fireside Duels go live on Twitch.tv. Lead Designer Eric Dodds and designer and Shoutcaster Ben Brode, who is fast becoming the voice of Hearthstone, are sitting down to several duels, as well as answering viewer questions on Twitch and Twitter.

The duels so far have shown off the mage, shaman, warrior, paladin, warlock and druid, but it's possible that we'll get to see some of the other heroes in action today, as well as the minion cards. It's also a great chance to get more into the game's mechanics, and develop more understanding, thanks to the live nature of the duels, and the Q&A. Community Manager Phenteo is also on hand in the Twitch chatroom to field viewer questions.

The one question they don't seem that keen to answer just yet is this: does this mean a beta is impending? It seems fairly certain that Hearthstone will be at Blizzcon, at the latest, but who knows, it seems quite likely that there might even be a beta at Gamescom, given that Blizzard unveiled the Mists trailer there last year. What do you think?

Today's Activision-Blizzard financial reports states World of Warcraft took a subscriber hit this quarter, losing 1.3 million players since February.

The loss brings the total number of WoW players down to 8.3 million, its lowest level since the launch of the Burning Crusade expansion in 2007. Subscriber levels have fallen by about a third since WoW's post-Cataclysm peak of 12 million subscribers. The loss is hardly unusual -- you have to remember that WoW is a 9-year-old game, and we're at a pretty uninteresting time in the expansion cycle.

Have we mentioned yet that we're really excited to see if Blizzard is announcing a new MMO at BlizzCon?
World of Warcraft loses 1.3M subscribers since February, down to 8.3M originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 08 May 2013 17:00:00 EST.
The countdown to patch 5.3 is well and truly upon us, as Blizzard Community Manager Daxxarri posted a detailed blog on how to ready your account and gird your loins for the upcoming conflict. As ever, you can see the full post after the break.

There's a reduction in XP to get from 85-90, first and foremost, and Daxxarri actually posts that you should dust off your alts! Next up on the list is clarification of Item Upgrades. The voidbinders have returned from their vacation in, well, the void most likely, and are back to upgrade your items. PvPers can only upgrade season 12 items, at the same cost as before, 750 Conquest for upgrades of four item levels, and (most likely, although the blog says different) 1500 honor points for an upgrade of eight item levels. PvE gear can be upgraded in the usual manner, at the massively reduced cost of 250 Valor Points to upgrade per 4 Item Levels, for a total of 500 Valor for 8 Item Levels per item. This also applies retroactively to all items that can be upgraded using Valor, and the exact same numbers apply to Justice gear.

Blizzard is also adding more ways to get your hands on Lesser Charms with patch 5.3, they will drop from outdoor world creatures level 90 and above, as well as from rare spawns in Pandaria. There are also a ton of PvP changes, which we've covered at length, and some other useful tidbits. One thing which isn't discussed is currency conversion, but it seems likely, though not absolutely certain, that no conversion will take place. The PvP season is still ongoing, and there is no new raid tier. Hit the break for Daxxarri's full post.

Continue reading Blizzard's guide to preparing for Patch 5.3: Escalation

Blizzard's guide to preparing for Patch 5.3: Escalation originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 08 May 2013 16:00:00 EST.
Sure, we all like gold. But even the most gold hungry among us can see the problem with a bug that allowed players to accumulate trillions of in-game currency, which is exactly what happened with Diablo III's patch 1.0.8. As a result, the game's Auction House was taken down, and Blizzard is still debating what actions to take to correct the issue, but Lylirra posts on the official forums that roll backs won't be necessary.

12:00 a.m. PDT: At this time (and after careful consideration), we've decided to not move forward with rolling back the servers. We feel that this is the best course of action given the nature of the dupe, how relatively few players used it, and the fact that its effects were fairly limited within the region. We've been able to successfully identify players who duplicated gold by using this specific bug, and are focusing on these accounts to make corrections. While this is a time-consuming and very detailed process, we believe it's the most appropriate choice given the circumstances. We know that some of you may disagree, but we feel that performing a full roll back would impact the community in an even greater way, as it would require significant downtime as well as revert the progress legitimate players have made since patch 1.0.8 was released this morning.

I know it would be a pretty big blow to lose character levels or gear acquired legitimately, so if they can go after the actual accounts that used the exploit and remove just their duplicated gold, that seems like the best option to me.

Wowhead's Perculia has been as busy as ever cataloging the new achievements currently on the patch 5.3 PTR, putting together a comprehensive guide over at Wowhead.

Do head over to check that out, but we're going to pull some of the more exciting ones out, with a focus on pets and mounts. WoW Insider also recently covered the new Gorgeous title, which comes from completing all the achievements in the new battleground, Deepwind Gorge.

First up, for completing Raiding with Leashes II: Attunement Edition, collecting all 10 of the new pets which have been dropped into the old raids listed on the achievement, players are awarded yet another pet, Tito's Basket! In the same vein of pet-related achievements awarding yet more pets, the Brutal Pet Brawler achievement awards a Stunted Direhorn. Lastly, in the pet battles category, there's an achievement called The Longest Day, which, when you look at the tooltip, you'll realise is aptly named. Carrying out that mammoth task will award you a Marked Flawless Battle Stone, which can be used to boost any pet to Rare quality.

What's more, mount collectors rejoice, because there's a new benchmark, 200 mounts, for which Mount Parade awards yet another mount, the Armored Dragonhawk, in blue for the Alliance and a fetching red for the Horde.

Heirloom shields are looking good for patch 5.3, according to a tweet from Lead Systems Designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street:

@addohm No known issues with them at the moment. Looks positive for 5.3.

- Greg Street (@Ghostcrawler) April 30, 2013

Heirloom shields were amongst the things that didn't quite make the cut for patch 5.2. Blizzard Senior Community Rep Jonathan "Zarhym" Brown posted the following a little while back on the official forums by way of explanation for their absence:

Zarhym

Heirloom shields were originally planned to be added in patch 5.2, but, unfortunately, due to a late-breaking bug with these items which prevented them from properly scaling with level, we had to remove them. We still want to get these shields in the game and plan to do so in a future patch.

Yesterday evening the WoW official blog announced there there will be a CoverItLive Q&A session at 5:30 pm PDT with Blizzard developers Dave Kosak, Ion Hazzikostas, Brian Holinka, Cory Stockton, and Greg Street on the subject of Mists of Pandaria's gameplay and design. Familiar community managers Bashiok, Crithto, Daxxarri, Rygarius, and Zarhym will be your friendly neighborhood moderators for the event. The session is scheduled to last around 45 minutes, though I'm certain many more minutes worth of questions will be asked!

I'm excited to see this event come around, Blizzard has hosted a few CoverItLive chats in the past and they're always very interesting to see. The real-time interaction is fun and gratifying, and we always learn new things about the game and Blizzard's approach to development. For those of you who may not have seen one of these before, you can check out WoW Insider's transcripts of previous live developer Q&A's to get a sense of what to expect:

The latest set of updates to the latest build landed on the Blizzard blog last night, and there are some more pretty big changes coming in on the PTR. As well as the usual class balance fixes, which bring some more number balancing to Atonement for discipline priests, as well as to paladins' Battle Healer, there are some fairly notable quality of life changes being made to the older content in this expansion.

Experience needed to increase from level 85 to level 90 has been reduced by 33%.

Players no longer need to have defeated Grand Empress Shek'zeer to enter the Terrace of Endless Spring in Normal difficulty.

And what's more, for current content, there is a substantial change to the acquisition quest for Mogu Runes of Fate.

Reduced the number of Lesser Charms of Good Fortune needed for the Mogu Runes of Fate weekly quest to 50, down from 90.

The experience nerf and the Lesser Charm change are the most interesting here, and it seems like Blizzard might be rethinking some of their earlier ideas on how hard the grind has to be in order to encourage players to stay and level their alts. What do you think?

Hit the break for the full notes.
Continue reading Patch 5.3 PTR patch notes for April 22

Patch 5.3 PTR patch notes for April 22 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 12:00:00 EST.

The Legendary meta gems, added in patch 5.2, as the reward from the latest part of Wrathion's quest chain are getting quite the reputation. Amongst others, top EU guild Method asserted that these items were key to their World First Ra-den kill, as the buff they provide to gear, particularly the proc, is so substantial.

But there's some confusion around regarding their usage. A cursory glance at the tooltip indicates that they can be socketed in any item with an ilvl of more than 504. A poster on the EU forums has asked today for explanation on why his ilvl 496 helm, which he had upgraded to ilvl 504, is still considered too low-level for the gem. Blizzard Community Manager Draztal responds as follows:

 Quote:
Is it intended that you aren't able to socket upgraded gear prior to 5.2 with the legendary Meta? I have a 496 helm upgraded to 504 but it still denies that it is high enough to be socketed. Some dev feedback be appreciated.

Yes, it is intended that you can't put the legendary meta gem on an upgraded 496 helm, but the developers are currently discussing how upgraded items may behave down the road.

No promises or any specifics we can share at this time, though.

 source

What's your take on this? I suspect that it's potentially born of an issue with the way upgrades are designed. It seems odd that, while the item has the required ilvl, an error is still generated. Perhaps it's an effort on the developers' part to ensure the Legendary meta can only be equipped in gear obtained from Throne of Thunder normal mode, or last tier's heroic gear.

Ghostcrawler tweeted the following, which seems slightly contradictory to Draztal's post, but does clarify Blizzard's intent:

@xxvanitasxx1 The intent was always for Throne of Thunder helms. Apologies that we did not communicate that intent well.

 - Greg Street (@Ghostcrawler) April 17, 2013

Given that we've had reports of the gem working in last tier's Heroic items, it seems a little odd that upgraded gear should be excluded. Nonetheless, forewarned is forearmed, so we thought we should inform you!

The latest set of hotfixes are here, and as you'd expect, a lot of them relate to the Throne of Thunder raid, the last Raid Finder wing of which opened yesterday in the US, and today in the EU. Amongst the abilities and elements which have suffered nerfs, Durumu will now pause for longer after his "Eye Sores" -- the maze of purple doom -- before starting up his regular attacks again. Tortos' whirl turtles have now had an issue removed where, just occasionally, they would proceed towards the boss at what seemed like a glacially slow speed, even when kicked in a timely fashion!

What's more, there have been several nerfs to heroic boss abilites, which implies that, with the world first race over, heroic progression might not be going quite as quickly as the development team had imagined. Again, these are targeted nerfs to specific abilities, and to a few bugs, such as Iron Qon's champions trying to reposition themselves. However, Heroic Primordius has taken a flat 11% health nerf in both 10-man and 25-man heroic difficulty.
There have also been several adjustments to the procs of the Legendary meta gems, with changes being made to both Clearcasting and Fortitude which should allow them to function correctly.

For this week only, ending April 22, the Battle Chest is available on the battle.net store for just €10. This basically equates to a third off, save the euro cent, and this is reflected in the sterling price of £7.99. Based on our past experience here at WoW Insider, we are fairly confident in asserting that a US sale will follow shortly, and we'll update this post to reflect that.

Why should you purchase a Battle Chest? You're already playing WoW! Well, imagine if more of your friends played WoW, too. This is a great way to get started, and do remember that, of course, given the recent addition of Wrath of the Lich King to the Battle Chest, and the change meaning that all players can play all races, there's a whole lot of WoW here for your money.

This is also a great way to get your hands on a mount, the Obsidian Nightwing to be precise, and as we investigated here at WoW Insider a while back, Recruit-A-Friend a pretty reasonable way to buy a mount. You also get some sweet leveling bonuses, grantable levels, 300%XP, that sort of thing, and you get the chance at a Scroll of Resurrection, when those next come around.

Update: The Battle Chest is now also on sale in the US for $10.

The latest set of patch 5.3 PTR patch notes has just dropped, and boy is it a doozy. There are some pretty significant changes in there, so let's dive right in to the highlights, as ever the full notes are after the break.

Shado-Pan and The August Celestials daily quests no longer have a faction prerequisite to be Revered with the Golden Lotus.

A Test of Valor: Reduced the amount of Valor needed for this achievement to 3000 Valor Points, down from 6000.

Tyrannical weapons no longer have a conquest-earned prerequisite to purchase them.

Picking up the Alliance or Horde flag while in a Rated Battleground now increases damage taken by 50% for characters in a tanking specialization, and increases damage taken by 20% for characters in a non-tanking specialization.

Demonic Gateway cast time has been reduced to 4 seconds, down from 5 seconds, and can now be attacked and killed by enemy players. Each gateway has 100% of the summoning Warlock's health, and 100% of their resilience.

Living Bomb's periodic damage has been increased by 121%. Its explosion damage has been reduced by 78%, but now scales with additional periodic ticks added by haste, and hits all nearby targets (up from 3).

Shuriken Toss now deals 100% more damage in the initial ranged attack, damage is no longer doubled when used on targets farther than 10 yards away, and energy cost has been increased to 40 energy, up from 20.

The world first race is now genuinely over, Method have killed Ra-Den on 25-man, with no bugs or glitches, and a full 25-man raid's worth of health. Method Raider Blatty says on his facebook page:

It's over. We'd predicted that we would get him this week, and after two pulls it was done. We are now the only people in the world to have killed the last boss of tier 15.

After the previously reported issues experienced by Asia's 七 煌, who apparently switched to 10-man and managed to get Ra-Den to bug out, there was a hotfix implemented to prevent the issue where Ra-Den was apparently able to be kept from gaining many of his abilities.

Many people thought it might be the case that the limited attempts would therefor be removed, or at least that the race would carry on for a while longer. Now that he's down, we can look forward to Method's videos showing off the fight and kill, and see what all the fuss has been about. Method have taken this last boss down ahead of Paragon, who have led the race all along, albeit in the 10-man size, and ahead of Blood Legion, Russia's Eksorsus, the EU's Sanitas and Envy, as well as the US guild, Midwinter, all of whom were on 12/13.

Congratulations to Method!

Blizzard posted yesterday about patch 5.3's aforementioned introduction of off-spec rolls, and it's now in the PTR, so, of course, WoW Insider had to go check it out. Our first observation is that it's slightly oddly positioned, as you can see in the image above, it's in the right-click drop-down menu that comes off the character pane. Once you've located it, it's simply, as you can see, a matter of picking your spec and heading into your chosen content. As you can see above, I'm on a shaman, and so can choose to gear any of my three specs. The "Default" option, as the name would suggest, is the standard behavior of the system: the loot will be for the spec you have entered the instance in.

This system is active wherever the new loot priority system is, so, Raid Finder loot, including Bonus Rolls, and, as the Blizzard post says, Heroic Scenarios and Mists of Pandaria quests. At the moment on the PTR, it is not working for normal scenario loot, I went and did a few scenarios as Elemental with Enhancement loot selected, and got intellect mail every time, which is not a huge surprise given that the Blizzard post doesn't specify non-heroic scenarios. It is a little odd, though, given that many people will start off in normal scenarios, particularly DPS hoping to gear a tank or heal spec, as the queue times are so much shorter.

Of course, this system is not relevant for 5-man dungeons, where you can already roll need on off-spec gear with no detriment to your chances apart from the anger of four other people. Alas, thanks to a mixture of very long queue times and woefully bad luck, I was unable to test this system in the Raid Finder.

Yesterday's hotfixes may have been a short list, but today's list, just released on the official blog, are slightly more substantial. While there are a few quest fixes and tweaks, the majority of today's list of hotfixes involve the Throne of Thunder raid. Players that are currently raiding in a 10-man group may want to take a look at the list, because damage has been reduced for many of the bosses and boss abilities.

Just in case yesterday's Durumu changes weren't enough, Durumu's Disintegration Beam now dissipates sooner before reaching the end of the Maze of Death[TM].

Whirl Turtles on 10-man normal mode Tortos now have a reduced base movement speed.

Both the Brutal Talisman of the Shado-Pan Assault and the Vicious Talisman of the Shado-Pan Assault have had their effects adjusted in the case of PvP vs. PvE.

Hot on the heels of yesterday's batch of hotfixes is another short and sweet edition of tweaks. Just released on the official blog, today's list primarily concerns the Throne of Thunder raid, with some incredibly welcome changes to Durumu and his baffling maze, as well as a peculiarly specific bug fix for tauren and gnome players.
If you're even remotely interested in WoW PvP, and aren't yet following Brian Holinka on Twitter, you really should be. We've been talking about him quite a bit lately here at WoW Insider, as he's the main agent behind the huge PvP changes coming in in patch 5.3. He's also incredibly responsive, open and helpful on Twitter, and seems to set aside a huge amount of his free time to respond to players' concerns, and hold open and constructive discussions, while not being afraid to fire out some sarcasm crits on the trolls that often haunt those in his position.

He's previously tweeted about the return of the skirmish system, and has been very responsive indeed about the 5.3 changes, and lately he's also been discussing some more confirmed and potential changes in patch 5.3 and beyond.

Now, please do take these changes with a pinch of salt, these aren't even PTR patch notes, but potential changes, some of which are being tested and appearing on patch notes, and some of which are just in the pipeline for the future.
Coming to WoW in patch 5.3 is an in-game web browser, sorta. We've known for a bit that there's been datamined content that has been pointing to an in-game browser, and today it was announced on Blizzard's official blog that it's a feature coming in patch 5.3. While the press release says "feature-limited," it's a bit more drastic really -- you cannot access any content outside of the battle.net domain, at all. Any links to places like Wowhead or WoW Insider get opened in an external browser.

You can load up the patch 5.3 PTR and access the tool for yourself if you'd like to try it out -- but it is rather underwhelming in its current state. There's not much to do but browse support information; which is helpful sometimes (although the times that I've had to use the support site, I usually haven't been able to get into WoW in the first place).

There is no indication if Blizzard will open up external domains later on.
We're adding a feature-limited web browser to World of Warcraft that will replace the in-game support system with a direct portal to the Battle.net Support site. Our aim is to give players in-game easy access to the site's robust knowledge base and support contact system.

We've gone to great lengths to improve our website support systems and we want to offer access to all of its robust features in-game. The new browser will make it it easier to find information to help you resolve issues you're experiencing or contact our representatives if you need a little extra help.

We will test this new feature in the 5.3 public test realm (PTR), and we'd like your assistance. Adding a web browser in-game is a new venture for us, and we need you to test it by searching through the support knowledge base and pages to make sure that it holds up in various hardware and network situations. It's important to note that while we will be testing the functionality of this feature within the PTR, we are unable to process support ticket submissions.

To help test and provide feedback, copy your character and download the PTR client.

We'd appreciate your feedback and testing reports to be put into the below forum thread so we can collect and respond to any errors or issues you're seeing.

Manaflask, ardent follower of the World First race, has reported that the final bonus boss of this tier has been defeated by a Chinese guild named 七 煌. So why the question mark? Manaflask has looked deeper into the kill, and it appears that there's something fishy afoot.

Asia's guilds are already considered to be on a separate racecourse, so to speak, to the EU and NA guilds we habitually report on, thanks to their increased item levels and higher HP bosses, but this is far beyond that. Manaflask reports the following:

Apparently 七 煌 switched to 10 man after downing Lei Shen in 25 and that made all of Ra-Den's abilities work as it if were 10 man (except they had 25 people there fighting him) [...] The guild supposedly reported the issue to Blizzard so there isn't any actual exploiting going on, just a bug due to the different way in which 10s and 25s are handled in Asia (different lockout etc).

What's more, and this is unconfirmed so should be treated as such, theories have surfaced that there is a bug with the boss. The guild's raid leader is quoted as having said that they also "met something usual in the encounter". We assume they mean unusual, and Manaflask also has theories that, by preventing Ra-Den from reaching his adds, he is prevented from gaining any of his abilities. They also mentioned that Ra-Den turns friendly at 5.5%, which seems likely to be an intentional feature, given what we've heard already in sound files and the like.

The guild have, as mentioned above, reported this to Blizzard, and are convinced that, given all the aforementioned, their kill shouldn't be considered valid. Ion Hazzikostas previously asserted that if he was badly bugged the limited attempts would be lifted, but that seems unlikely at this late stage. We will wait and see, but for now, he's down.

The hotfixes keep on coming! The latest batch are fairly minimal, but they don't make diamonds as big as bricks. They're addressing one particular bug which WoW Insider has seen mentioned several times on Twitter lately, specifically one which would strand players on a phased warship while trying to complete the quest Extended Shore Leave. Unable, it seems, to hotfix the unphasing of the warship, Blizzard's team pulled the quest for now.

And Durumu has had a bit of a change. Interestingly, it's not to the purple-on-purple issue with his maze of purple death phase, but instead it's an increase in speed for the yellow eye cone. But, most excitingly, there's a fix in place for warlocks who have completed Seek the Signal and are stuck in the wrong Black Temple phase. Rejoice, in a warlocky way!

The observant among the WoW community will have noticed that, on the Warcraft side at least, Blizzard didn't put out an April Fool's joke this year. There was a little confusion surrounding this, as Crabby made a reappearance on the official forums, back for another year, and a really excellent piece of fan-created art depicting a Dark Ranger was doing the rounds. The Starcraft team documented the apparent return of the Warhound, and even implemented it in-game, re-skinning all your workers as Warhounds.

And while some of the WoW community were happy to amuse themselves with ElvUI's Harlem Shake, or Wowhead's PTR patch notes, others grew increasingly angry that the WoW team hadn't put together a prank for this most foolish of days. Blizzard Senior Community Rep Jonathan "Zarhym" Brown took to Twitter, and to the official forums, to attempt to explain the absence of any seasonal folly.

All his posts are after the break, but the long and short of it is that, firstly, while some ideas had been bandied about, nothing had really stuck, and secondly, the team who usually work on the April Fool's jokes had been rather busy with other things. What other things could possibly have taken priority? Maybe Hearthstone itself, the Hearthstone website, or the recent revamp of the shop page, given how Zarhym explains the teams' roles.

It seems like Blizzard can't win: last year there were complaints that they wasted Developer time on April foolishness, this year, complaints that they didn't. What's your take on it? Did you wish they had done something? Or would you rather they spent time designing real content? Hit the break for Zarhym's posts.

Continue reading Zarhym on why Blizzard didn't do an April Fools joke

Zarhym on why Blizzard didn't do an April Fools joke originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 15:00:00 EST. BlizzCon 2013 tickets are $175 and will go on sale at the following times:

 Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. PDT

 Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. PDT

BlizzCon takes place November 8 and 9 this year at the same place it's always been: the Anaheim Convention Center outside of LA. For those that cannot attend in person, a virtual ticket will be made available. And of course, we'll also have around the clock coverage on WoW Insider.

Tickets to BlizzCon have normally sold out in seconds (literally), so you'll need to be at your computer at the times above, be very quick, and have a lot of luck in order to get one.

Good luck! The full announcement is after the break.
Continue reading BlizzCon tickets go on sale April 24 and 27

BlizzCon tickets go on sale April 24 and 27 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 10:10:00 EST.

The good folks over at Wowhead have been very busy indeed datamining away in the recent patch 5.3 PTR update, and discovered two new mounts, as yet un-named. They're referring to them as "Pegasus" mounts, likely because they're flying horses, makes sense after all.

Given that we know very little about them, apart from what they look like, it stands to reason that we also don't know quite where they come from. It should be noted, though that they're in the two colors that neatly align with those of the game's factions. Perhaps a clue?

This suggests that the mount is faction-specific, so, again purely speculating, this might indicate one of several sources. Faction-specific mounts could come from the battle.net store, where buying one item nets you two, such as existing pets. Or, it could be another, similar reward, such as the Spectral Gryphon or Spectral Wind Rider awarded for a successful Scroll of Resurrection. Failing that, and looking a little more on the bright side, it could be a reputation reward available in recolors for both factions. Or, we could be reading far too much into the color element!

MMO Champion has a video of the new mount in action. What is your take on it? If it was a pet store mount, would you buy it?

A new PTR build went up last night, but the notes didn't hit the Blizzard site until today, probably in an attempt to avoid the assumptions that their latest build was an April Fool's joke. The PTR notes have been updated, and highlights as well as full notes are below, but there was some more information posted on Wowhead about the latest build, which hasn't made it into the patch notes:

Glyph of Mass Dispel: This has changed for the glyph to offer the usual "non-dispellable effect" benefit as something that you have to glyph for.. Ghostcrawler later confirmed on twitter that the cast time reduction is baked into Mass Dispel for Holy and Discipline.

Glyph of Unleashed Lightning: Glyph of Unleashed Lightning has been replaced by Glyph of Lightning Shield, which reduces damage taken by 10%. This provides some additional mitigation for DPS shaman, and the ability to cast while moving is now baseline for elemental.

Atonement now seems to heal for 80% of the damage dealt, down from 100%.

There is a five-minute cooldown Void Shift for Discipline and Holy priests now, but also a new 10 minute version for Shadow Priests.

Please note that the above is datamined, not patch notes, and should be treated as such. Hit the break for the new patch notes, which include:

A huge amount of pet battle additions

 New Brawler's Guild Bosses!

More steps have been built in Dalaran Arena!

More information on the Darkspear, Orgrimmar, and just exactly what's going on in the Barrens

 More Legendary Quest Information!

Blizzard decided to ring in the weekend with a short and sweet list of hotfixes for patch 5.2. Today's list is pretty short, with just a few class tweaks and a couple of additional adjustments to raid bosses and items. Combat rogues may want to take a look at the adjustment made to Blade Flurry, however.
Blizzard stands out amongst other game companies in their astounding array of musical entities. From legitimate choral and orchestral works, to the dedicated professionals that bring you the realistic sounds you hear every day in game -- their multidimensional musicality is astounding. Sound is often over looked in a game, but in reality it is just as important as the visuals and the text you read; everything is about creating an emotional response to what your character in-game is doing, what they're fearing, what their heroism is forcing them to undertake.

We talk a lot about how that heroism is impacted by mechanics and lore, but little about how it's impacted by the audible stimuli of the surrounding environment and its many creatures. Take a minute while you do your dailies and raiding tonight and see if you can tell what's going on just by the sounds. I think you'll be quite surprised.

In a new post on their blog, Blizzard goes into how some of their sound design was accomplished for patch 5.3 and MoP. There's some more interesting facts that we learn in the article:

The Zandalari Battlesaur consists of three sound layers (previewed in the video above): Voice actor Jon Olson, a bear, and a tiger

There's five full time people working on WoW's sound design

The monk's "woosh" sound was made by swinging large objects around in a circle and editing them together

Then there's also this line from Blizzard's post, which stands out as potentially the best thing ever written about Warcraft:

We also did a big vegetable destruction recording session where we tore up ears of corn, smashed walnuts, hit cabbage, and twisted celery among other things to use for sweeteners. These sounds were used in various ambiences, Monk abilities, creature exertions, farming, doodads, spells and in many different quests.

Blizzard's detailed look under the hood of sound design is available on their blog.

Another round of hotfixes for patch 5.2 has just been released on the official blog. It's a pretty short list, by and large involving changes for several classes. Before you get too panicked, most of the class changes simply involve tweaks to T15 set bonuses rather than direct class changes. Shaman with a penchant for healing, however, should be pretty happy with this round of fixes.

The shaman spells and abilities Chain Heal, Healing Rain, and Earthliving Weapon now all heal for 20% more.

T15 Brewmaster monk 2-piece should now correctly increase Stagger by 12%.

Oondasta's health has been reduced by 50%. This does not, however, make him any less terrifying or deadly.

Read on for the full list of hotfixes.

Continue reading Patch 5.2 hotfixes for March 27

Patch 5.2 hotfixes for March 27 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 20:19:00 EST.

Hot off the presses tonight is the patch 5.3 PTR Patch Notes. Right off the bat to quell any rumors -- there is no indication of when the PTR will be active (other than soon), or when this patch is going to drop.

Some of the highlights of this patch thus far include:

 Gold Rush, a new battleground.

 Shado-Pan, a new arena.

Major PvP changes. Largest in quite a while.

Battle of the High Seas, Blood in the Snow, Dark Heart of Pandaria, The Secrets of Emberdeep -- four, yes not one, not two, not three, but four new scenarios.

Heroic difficulty for scenarios added, awards valor and a chance at Raid Finder quality items.

You can now duel with your pets in dungeons and raids.

Bonus rolls have a progressively better chance at awarding loot if you've used them and they turn up nothing.

We can now pick a loot specalization that's different than our current spec for LFR, Bonus Rolls, and Pandarian quests.

Blizzard has just released the cinematic for HearthStone, embedded above. It's fun and goofy, which is the impression I have of the game itself! The voice-over goes through some of Warcraft's most notable heroes: Thrall, Jaina, Illidan, Garrosh, and settles on some beer-swilling dwarves telling you to forget about blood and honor and just sit back and enjoy yourself. Kind of sounds like a Saturday night in Ironforge, doesn't it?

I'm already looking forward to this game more than I would have thought. I'm a sucker for cartoonish fun, which this game looks to have in spades. I've always enjoyed card games like Magic: The Gathering but I hate physically collecting cards, and I've moved so much in the last ten years that I lose them anyway. Digital card games are growing in popularity, and Hearthstone seems like a solid addition to the genre.

Just when you thought it was over, another round of hotfixes have been released. Today's list of fixes is pretty short and sweet, with only one small class related bug fix. The rest of the tweaks by and large involve the Isle of Thunder and the Throne of Thunder raid. And for those diligently working on stage 3 daily quests out there on the Isle, one of these changes should be a welcome relief.

Statue pieces for the Crumbled Chamberlain now do not despawn when looted, which means the hours of trying to beat other players to those pesky gear icons are officially over. Rejoice!

Because everyone loves a laser-slingin' dinosaur, Oondasta now respawns much more frequently.

Melee, you can cease fearing the snail. Gastropods in the Throne of Thunder should now favor attackers at range.

We're just going to leave this here...

In China, because of cultural rules/laws, dead players are represented by tombstones instead of skeletons. Dave Kosak tweeted as much and shared this picture with us all. And now you get to enjoy Oondasta stomping around a graveyard.

You can see a larger version of it right over here.
