"Fast patch" 4.1.0a patch notes

Just when you think you're used to the way things are going, Blizzard releases something new. Today's notes aren't a list of hotfixes; they're a "fast patch." This means when you log into World of Warcraft, you're going to have a mini-patch to download -- and it also means that some major issues are being addressed, including one that's been bugging raiders and anyone trying to use AoE spells since 4.1:
  • The targeting reticule for AoE spells and abilities like Magmaw's chains should no longer disappear when players cast spells.
  • Animations while mounted should work normally again. Say hello to your ponies, they're now moving correctly!
  • Character legs should move properly when the character is moving.
See the rest of the notes for 4.1.0a after the break.

Cataclysm hotfixes for Dec. 21

Continuing the steady stream of Cataclysm tinkering we've seen this week, Blizzard has posted yet another set of hotfixes. And this is a pretty good set! Some notable changes:
  • The duration of the Superheated Quicksilver Armor debuff on Karsh Steelbender is now 17 seconds, up from 12 seconds. The encounter was too hard to tank and went against our intended fight mechanics. The display for this buff may not properly update until a client-side patch is applied.
  • Rare archaeology finds should now grant triple skill gains.
  • Mekgineer Thermaplugg is no longer using outdated abilities and has a shiny new list of abilities to use. He is also no longer immune to taunts.
  • Elemental Goos now drop 100% of the time off of Cataclysm elementals for the jewelcrafting daily quest.
  • Chaos Orbs can now only been seen and rolled on by characters with a minimum skill level of 425 in tailoring, blacksmithing, leatherworking, or engineering.
For the full list of hotfixes, follow us behind the break below.

In-game fixes for December 15th

Another day, another round of in-game hotfixes. This time the most interesting one of the bunch is the increase in Battered Hilt drop rate (the Battered Hilt leads to the Quel'Delar). Of course it could mean that the hilt drop rate was increased from 0.001% to 0.01%, but hey, at least that's one whole decimal place! Please note however that we don't know what the actual drop rate was nor what it is now. All we know that it's very low.

In actuality, one could surmise that the drop rate was increased to combat some of the outrageous prices that we're seeing on the AH. 20,000 gold or more for a weapon that will be outdated in less than a year is a bit much.
  • Quel'Delar in now unique equip.
  • Naxxramas can now be cleared in any order for the Immortal and Undying achievements.
  • The drop rate for the Battered Hilt has been increased.
  • The Skeletal Slave in the Pit of Saron has had the ability to drop the Battered Hilt and other random drop epics removed.
The entire list of in-game hotfixes from the past seven days after the break.

Patch 3.3 PTR: Patch Notes updated

The PTR patch notes for Patch 3.3. have been updated. Some of the significant changes:
  • Oculus appears to have been significantly nerfed. Obviously, this was done to facilitate easier random PUGs using the new cross-server dungeon system.
  • Divine Intervention: This ability now also removes Exhaustion and Sated from the target. In addition, the cooldown on this ability has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas.
  • Lay on Hands: This ability will place Forbearance on the paladin if used on his or herself. It will not place Forbearance on others.
  • Bug fixes... 158 of them by my count.
It appears that Blizzard isn't done with the changes to Lay on Hands, which should be particularly noteworthy to Paladins everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised to see LoH go through a few more changes before all is said and done.

The full changes after the break.

Patch 3.2.2: 5-man Coliseum jousting woes to be addressed

I'm sure a lot of us have had this experience: You finish up jousting down the three champions in the first encounter of the 5-man Trial of the Champions, then all hell breaks loose. Your tank goes to lock down the Warrior, but in the meantime, the Rogue, who fell on the other side of the coliseum, makes a beeline to your healer, who was the person who dismounted him. Then the Mage, who's on yet a third side of the arena, starts blasting down your Mage who never seems to get any stamina on his gear. Your tank tries to rein everybody in, but since the bosses still have the aggro they built up from the jousting stage, they're near impossible to peel. Everyone dies.

Ghostcrawler hints at another patch before patch 3.2

With many of the major features of patch 3.2 having been announced, and a lot of people already somewhat bored with patch 3.1 content, and with the new dungeon/raid instance being a relatively simple "arena" format, many have been hoping that we'll see a 3.2 PTR soon. However, it looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer than hoped. In a recent post regarding adjustments to Druid set bonuses, Ghostcrawler let slip that a change would be coming "long before 3.2."

While it's possible this could just be slipped in with other hotfixes, it does seem to imply that we can expect another bug fix and minor balance tweaking patch before 3.2 hits the servers. Of course, this is probably good news for those hoping for adjustments and fixes for their class or spec, but for those who just want more new stuff to do: Well, sorry, you may have to make those ulduar trips or Argent Tournament dailies last just a bit longer.

World of Warcraft Patch 3.1.1a

A good note from the EU side of things today. There will be a minor bug patch to the client side of the game in the next few days. This patch will bring the game up to version 3.1.1a.

The only change that we're told about right now in 3.1.1a will be indicting on the Exorcism tooltip that it will not damage other players. Exorcism was changed in 3.1.1, leaving many PvP Paladins unhappy.

As for when exactly this small patch will drop, we're not told. I wouldn't be surprised to see it tomorrow morning, however.

In-game fixes for April 20th and April 21st

Tongiht Bornakk has released another long list of in-game fixes that has already been applied today. He notes that these changes might not become active until after the servers reset tomorrow from the maintenance, so we don't know for sure what's in and what's out yet. Some of these changes would affect Ulduar raids tonight if they are already live.

A few of the more notable changes include:
  • All of the additional creatures spawned during the XT-002 Deconstructor encounter can now be snared in either difficulty.
  • For the Hodir encounter, the damage from Champion of Hodir's Freezing Breath has been reduced, the haste effect from Starlight has been decreased, and the timer for the hard mode has been decreased.
  • For the Thorim encounter, the Runic Colossus should stop channeling Runic Smash once engaged in combat, the Dark Rune Champion should no longer whirlwind after being disarmed, and the Runic Colossus should no longer melee when it charges.
  • The buff players receive from Tenacity in Wintergrasp is now stronger.
The full list of today's changes, and previous changes, after the break.

Incoming hot fixes and other bugs

There are a number of hot fixes and a couple notable bugs we wanted to bring to your attention. Ideally all these will be fixed soon, according to our standards and not according to Blizzard's definition of soon.

First is the Malygos bug where Circle of Healing and Wild Growth were not function when a player was in a Vortex. Ghostcrawler has posted that this will be getting fixed in the next couple of days. I wouldn't be surprised if this is fixed tonight.

Daelo, the lead encounter designer, also came out today and said the following with regard to what they're looking at: "We're checking into the various issues noted here, including why his cone breath hits targets behind his centerpoint, issues with malygos deciding to attack in phase 2, and trying to make the defense bubble's protection work even if you enter the bubble in between the time a missile is launched and when it lands."

Breakfast Topic: Uh, yeah, patch day

Ok, so I didn't call it right. Adam did over chat, though, saying that changes needed to be made client side which indicated a patch. Of course, since I'd written everything up and because I'm lazy and didn't offer to eat my hat, I went ahead and said it's not a patch day. As it turns out, it was a patch day, although most definitely not one of those newfangled patches with bells and whistles and cool new features. It was a patch that resembled an honest-to-goodness patch, the kind that you sew on to holes in your pants. The kind of patch that's intended to cover up something embarrassing.

Because Patch 3.0.8 had a few holes that needed some patching, we got a nice little build to fix it yesterday. Like the Warlock's Ritual of Summoning. It really is fixed. How do like that flasher demon thing? Of course, they also nerfed Arcane Mages a little (more like a love tap, really). Is there anything you found in yesterday's, ah, patch that you found interesting? Since it wasn't a big patch, it didn't come with extensive patch notes. In fact, most of the stuff in there you'll probably have to discover yourself. Kind of like a mini-game. So how are you in this post Patch 3.0.8.9506 world?

Official 3.0.8.9506 patch notes

Nethaera has posted the official "patch notes" for patch 3.0.8.9506/3.0.8a today. They are listed in their entirety after the break.

These notes mirror what Ghostcrawler said in a series of posts last night. I imagine that these patch notes could be updated at some future time, listing more bug fixes if they're present. So you'll probably want to check back later and see if that's the case.

If you're looking for a download mirror for the patch files, check out our listing.

Patch 3.0.8.9506 mirrored at Big Download

Big Download has mirrored today's patch for us all. You can head over there and grab both the Mac and PC versions. While the download is small, just under seven megs, the Blizzard downloader has been known to lag out and not work correctly at times. And these times usually occur right on patch day, so we've got you covered.

This patch fixes some bug that have been around since 3.0.8 went live last Tuesday. We know at least three confirmed bugs it fixes, but we're not sure about the rest. This patch is being called 3.0.8.9506 or 3.0.8a.

Happy patch day!

As usual, please do not leave comments with external download links as we cannot verify their integrity. We have this rule for your safety!

Bug fixes for Hunters, Locks, and Death Knights tomorrow

Ghostcrawler has updated us on the status of three major bugs that have been present since patch 3.0.8 went live last Tuesday.
  • The Hunter Aspect bug, in which aspects are on a global cooldown like mechanism.
  • The Warlock Ritual of Summoning, which had a two minute cooldown implemented to prevent some sort of undisclosed exploit.
  • Howling Blast, which showed to not have a cooldown, but in reality had a five second one.
"Assuming nothing comes up at the last minute", Ghostcrawler says, "[these] will be fixed tomorrow."

There is no word if these fixes will come in the form of a small patch to the client, or if they are going to be done server side. Since the Howling Blast is a bug that is linked to client data files, I would assume that fixing it necessitates rolling out a minor patch. However that's just an assumption based on the way things were done in the past, and Blizzard could have other technology present to circumvent the need for a full patch.

Nonetheless, a couple more bugs will get fixed tomorrow. This is a good thing.

Encrypted Text: Patiently awaiting patch 3.0.8

Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the Rogue class. This week, we'll discuss the upcoming Rogue changes in patch 3.0.8.

According to the SK-Gaming Top 100, Rogues are doing pretty well. Our fraternity of assassins has a solid hold on the coveted #3 slot, behind the insanely dominant Death Knight / Holy Paladin combination. With Druids and Warriors being as powerful as they were in Seasons 3 and 4, seeing them bring up the bottom of the Top 100 representation is the truest indicator of significant balance changes that Wrath brought with it.

Luckily, I feel that Rogues are far stronger than our 10% representation shows. We are poised to absorb the market share that Paladin and Death Knights will be hemorrhaging when the long-awaited patch 3.0.8 comes to right all the wrongs that this team has committed. Four of the top six classes in the SK-100 are being nerfed significantly, with Rogues being the least affected by these changes. After the cut, I'll cover important changes for Rogues in 3.0.8, as well as a few changes that will alter our top opponents as well.

Totem Talk: 3.0.8, The Rise of Shamanism

The most recent patch notes for the PTR are among us. As promised, quite a few changes for shamans, especially elemental shamans, are included in this patch. First off, let's look at the specific changes to shamans.

Shaman
  • Fire Nova Totem: Now no longer generates threat.
  • Healing Way: Now only one application is required to reach full benefit. No longer stacks.
  • Improved Water Shield: Lesser Healing Wave now has a reduced chance to trigger this talent.
  • Magma Totem: The damage and scaling has been increased and no longer generates threat.
  • Mental Quickness and Static Shock have switched positions in the talent tree.
  • Mental Quickness: Reduces the mana cost of instant cast Shaman spells by 2/4/6% and increases spell power by an amount equal to 10/20/30% of your attack power.
  • Searing Totem (Rank 4) now does the proper damage for its rank.
  • Tremor Totem's duration has been increased from 2 minutes to 5 minutes.
The changes to Fire Nova and Magma Totem are aimed at shaman AoE issues: it seems the Blizzard designers are really set on shaman AoE coming from totems or Chain Lightning. While I'm still not sold on losing either Flametongue or Totem of Wrath just to do some AoE, hopefully the removal of threat on these totems will help.

The Imp WS change keeps you from using up a charge on a relatively low mana cost LHW, which I can see even if I won't be happy if I have no mana left and am using LHW because it's the only healing spell I have the mana for. The change to Healing Way is probably due to the fact that a lot of resto shamans don't bother to take it anymore since they have a more varied spell rotation with Riptide and Chain Heal still the standouts. I honestly don't know if this change will really accomplish much: it may encourage people to put a Healing Wave into the rotation just to keep the buff up, but if you're doing 90% of your healing with riptide and CH anyway, you may just not bother and keep not spending the talent points on it.
