Lichborne: Fall of Deathwing Raid Finder tips for death knights

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Lichborne for blood, frost, and unholy death knights. In the post-Cataclysm era, death knights are no longer the new kids on the block. Let's show the other classes how a hero class gets things done.

I will be frank: Every death knight should have a solid goal to defeat Deathwing this expansion. It's not for the experience, it's not the glory, it's not even for the achievements. No, it's for one thing: It's for the tentacle sword. This baby is everything that one can aspire for in a WoW weapon. It's a sword. It can be transmogrified into our signature runeblade. It has an awesome creepy pet proc. What's not to love?

Of course, to get to the sword, you'll first have to take down four bosses, hope the sword drops, and then hope you win the roll against who knows how many other plate DPSers in the raid -- but hey, you have to start somewhere, right? Let's dive into the Fall of Deathwing.

To be frank, the most annoying part of the fight with Ultraxion, the first boss, is his trash. Dragons will fly in slowly from the skies above and must be pulled down where you can DPS and/or tank them. If you can get past that, Ultraxion himself should be a breeze.

Roleplaying the eternal question of Deathwing's demise

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. In World of Warcraft, that player is you! Each week, Anne Stickney brings you All the World's a Stage with helpful hints, tips and tricks on the art of roleplay in WoW.

Ah, the last major patch of the expansion. It's a winding-down point for roleplayers, especially if they've been tying their stories into the events of the expansion itself. While some may be roleplaying the struggle to defeat Deathwing, others may be roleplaying those that have nothing to do with the end of Cataclysm -- the shopkeeps, the elderly or those simply too young to participate.

But the same question resounds for roleplayers of any capacity when we're facing the end of an expansion. Whether you're a raider who roleplays or a casual player who's never set foot in a raid, who actually kills the final boss? When the time came to save the world, who was it that struck the killing blow? And when did that death occur?

Breakfast Topic: What's your most anticipated patch 4.3 feature?

With the release of patch 4.3: Hour of Twilight, we are entering the final chapter in the Cataclysm saga. Deathwing has emerged from Deepholm, shattered our world, and laid siege to our cities. Now the time has finally come to take down Deathwing, a fairly significant lore figure going back thousands of years in Azeroth's time line and back to Warcraft II in ours.

Patch 4.3 is one of those sea-change patches where bombshell features are being added to the game. Transmogrification, void storage, and the Raid Finder (just to name a few) are big deals. WoW has been without solid character customization options for years, and transmogrification hopefully is only the beginning of a new push for more options.

Transmogrification is obviously my new favorite feature coming in patch 4.3, but what about you, dear readers? What are you most looking forward to doing or experiencing once the servers go back up and Azeroth finally gets to stand up against the might of Deathwing the Destroyer?

Oh, and if you need some context on the image above, the image of Deathwing smoking a hookah was actually a misunderstanding between a foreign art team and Blizzard while working on Warcraft: Lord of the Clans, but it was so awesome Blizzard decided to leave it in. Deathwing, you've changed, buddy. You used to be so chill.

Patch 4.3 PTR: Raid testing schedule for Oct. 17-18

Blizzard's Daelo has just announced that several patch 4.3 Dragon Soul raid bosses are coming open for testing on the PTR. The bosses are coming fast and furious; hopefully this signifies a near-future release date for WoW's final raid content patch. The first boss (Warlord Zon'ozz) will be available very shortly, so start rounding up guildies for a test run!

PTR Raid Testing Schedule - Oct 17/18
Today and tomorrow we're going to try and test the remaining bosses in Dragon Soul on 10 player difficulty.

Oct 17
14:30 PDT - Warlord Zon'ozz (10 Player)
16:30 PDT - Hagara (10 Player)

Oct 18
10:15 PDT – Ultraxion (10 Player)
11:45 PDT – Warmaster Blackhorn (10 Player)
14:30 PDT – Spine of Deathwing (10 Player)
16:30 PDT – Madness of Deathwing (10 Player)

There will be additional testing scheduled in the upcoming weeks including 25 player and Heroic difficulties, both in the morning and afternoon. There will not be any testing during Blizzcon.

As always, the scheduling for PTR testing will be VERY fluid. Tests can be announced, canceled, or rescheduled at a moment's notice depending on build and server status, outstanding bugs, etc. I will try to give as much advance notice about tests, but that is not always possible. Also note that these encounters are all works in progress.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Review the official patch notes, and then dig into what's ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing -- from astride his back!

Shifting Perspectives: 3 observations on the tier 13 set bonuses

Druid tier 13
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Shifting Perspectives for cat, bear, restoration and balance druids. This Tuesday, we ponder tier 13.

Tier 13's set bonuses were revealed this past Saturday night to the delight of many, the disgust of just as many, and the widespread horror of healers, who quickly arrived at the same conclusion that you're going to see me talk about in this column. Which is not to say that the tier set bonuses are bad, mind you -- it's just that they scare the hell out of us.

I'm going to muscle in on Alaron's job this week very briefly, because cats inevitably wind up with the same tier bonuses as bears. In tier 13, that's going to have some pretty serious implications for raid survivability, so we'll touch on that today. Resto itself didn't get anything too striking, but we do have enough information to hazard a guess at how much the set bonuses will add to our healing, and the feral bonuses hint at some tough stuff ahead for healers.

Patch 4.3: Dragon Soul raid preview

We've been hit with a ton of patch 4.3 news today, from previews of all of the new 5-man content to the new loot distribution for tier pieces coming with the next raid encounter. Now, players are given a sneak peek at the raid instance for patch 4.3, Dragon Soul, where heroes from the Alliance and Horde will face off against Deathwing himself.

Three difficulties of Dragon Soul will be available out of the gates, including normal, heroic, and the new Looking For Raid difficulty intended to give players an easier time with casual raiding in a new, less severe setting. The raid begins at Wyrmrest Temple, where Thrall has successfully delivered the Dragon Soul that was nabbed out from under Malfurion long ago in the Caverns of Time instance The Well of Eternity. The aspects are all there, ready to deal the final blow. First, however, players face off against six bosses, and then two encounters against Deathwing.

The first fight is a mighty elemental, Morchok, who attacks Wyrmrest itself. Players then face off against Warlod Zon'ozz, Yor'shaj the Unsleeping, and Hagara the Binder, all minions of the Old Gods assisting Deathwing in his plans to destroy Azeroth. Ultraxion, a dragon of immense dark energy, will attack players on Wyrmrest, followed by an army of Twilight's Hammer drake riders led by Warmaster Blackhorn. Most interestingly absent is Chromatus, the great five-headed chromatic dragon who first appeared as an enemy in Christie Golden's Twilight of the Aspects and was pegged to be a raid boss in the coming patches.

Finally, players will take the fight to Deathwing himself, landing on his back for the first part of his encounter and then attacking him in his final form on the edges of the Maelstrom. I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am for these final raid encounters from Cataclysm. Way to turn up the epic, Blizzard.

Patch 4.3: Epic gems and more on the Deathwing encounter from Ghostcrawler

Plaintively waiting for epic gems? They're on the way in patch 4.3 -- and the mechanic to obtain them is a little different this time around, according to Lead Systems Designer Greg Street, aka Ghostcrawler. In an interview with Tankspot, Ghostcrawler clarified how those epic gems are going to work.

"The way we're hoping to set it up, and we kind of have this working but things could change before we go live, is when you kill a boss on normal or heroic mode, each player gets a geode, and when they open the geode there's a chance they may find an epic gem inside. If not, it'll have blue gems or something like that," he said. Along with the scoop on epic gems, Ghostcrawler talked a bit about the upcoming legendary daggers and how they will work, as well as the Deathwing encounter.

For those wondering if the Deathwing encounter will be challenging, it certainly appears so -- and Deathwing himself will change from how we've seen him so far in game. Rather than the plate-wearing, mammoth-chinned beast we're accustomed to seeing, Deathwing will be hurt and resemble something Ghostcrawler calls "Cthulhu Deathwing." The entry for the Deathwing raid will be in the Caverns of Time, along with all other 4.3 instances.

For more on the Deathwing encounter, epic gems, tank threat and other 4.3 information, check out Tankspot's full interview.

Patch 4.3: Rogue legendaries, Raid Finder, and more

Blizzard's patch 4.3 info drop continues tonight with interviews going up across the blogosphere. Our sister site Joystiq posted a whole bunch of new info about 4.3's dungeons earlier, and now we've learned a few really cool pieces of information from Curse's interview with Greg Street (aka Ghostcrawler) about the new rogue legendary weapon, the Raid Finder, and more.

First, the rogue legendary is actually a pair of legendaries -- specifically, a pair of daggers named the Fangs of Father (which may be a mistranslation), according to Taiwanese Gamebase. GC explains across his interviews that rogues have understandably felt left out of this expansion both in terms of numbers and content, so giving them a legendary of their own was a good way to get them into the spotlight. The quest line for these daggers will revolve around the single pure black dragon egg that players helped protect in the Badlands. The dragon will hatch (it's a boy!) and lead rogues on a time- and gold-consuming quest around the world for their well-earned blades.

Deathwing fight will feature a ride on his back

German site Buffed.de recently posted a rundown on the newest patch 4.3 news from Gamescom in Germany, where Tom Chilton revealed that part of the Deathwing fight will take place on the back of the Aspect of Death. We might actually be fighting Deathwing multiple times, with one of the fights being on his back. The translation is a little fuzzy, but there will definitely be some fighting while in-flight as players try to bring the great dragon down.

Gamescom has already brought us huge WoW news in the form of the gear transmogrifiers as well as gear storage NPCs and the fact that we will get to face Deathwing sooner than we thought. Stay tuned for more announcements.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Look at what's ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing -- from astride his back!

Patch 4.3: Deathwing, cosmetic armor skins, and armor storage

European gaming convention Gamescom is in full swing this week in Cologne, Germany. German entertainment site Gamona.de sat down with both Tom Chilton and Chris Robinson to discuss the details of the upcoming patch 4.3, the patch where your dreams come true. It was revealed that the patch will include:
  • Deathwing's raid and three new 5-man dungeons
  • Cosmetic armor skins (!)
  • An armor closet to store old gear, freeing up bank space
As patch 4.3 will include Deathwing's raid, that probably means it will be the final patch in the expansion's overall narrative. If you doubted for a moment that Blizzard will announce the next expansion at this year's BlizzCon, doubt no more. We expect that these new 5-man dungeons will provide a new tier of heroics as well, pushing difficulty about Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub.

Follow us past the cut below for details on cosmetic armor skins and more!
