WoW Moviewatch: #Machinima Collaboration

Warning: This video involves some not-safe-for-work imagery. That includes a scantily clad female, as well as more artistic nudity near the end.

In order to really "get" this piece, you're probably going to need a little back story. First, there's this wonderful IRC channel where many of the superstars of machinima hang out. It's a little bit random chat, it's a little bit artist's studio, and it's little bit of a lot of other things.

As the story goes, about two years ago, there was a new kind of project being attempted. A handful of machinima creators decided to collaborate on a new video. The idea was that one person would work on a piece, then pass it off to the next. That person would then add their own segment, and pass it on to another.

As things sometimes happen, the collaboration was never completed. The work seemed lost. Until this past weekend, when Dopefish and Baron Soosdon were able to ferret out the whereabouts of each piece of that collaboration. And then, Dopefish uploaded the video.

This #Machinima Collaboration video includes work from Olibith, Nyhm, UncleTom, tehtaco, Telemora, Dopefish and Baron Soosdon. You should definitely take the time to check it out. As I warned above, though, there's a few not-safe-for-work pieces in it. But in a safe environment, this video is going to be an awesome treat.

Thanks to Selserene, who gave me the hookup to this video. You can see the video behind the cut.

WoW Machinima: The basics

(Dell is holding a machinima contest, which we'll discuss shortly. They asked me to write a tutorial to help new machinimators get their start.)

Every day, I feature a video by some brave soul that dived in head first into the world of machinima. For those that aren't familiar with the term, it stands for machine and cinema. The literal definition is movies made in a 3D gaming platform. Using this basic guide, as well as the other tutorials and resources available to you, you'll be creating your first project in no time!

Here is what you'll need if you want to make a machinima for free:

WoW Moviewatch: Bitfilm Festival vote videos

(Today's Moviewatch features videos of the WoW Bitfilm contestants asking for votes, however we are not suggesting you vote for anyone in particular. We are only showcasing them as they pertain to WoW. As there are fans of all platforms here, we know that you will make your choice based on your own preference. In addition, despite the image on Olibith's video before you play it, it is harmless.)

The World of Warcraft Bitfilm Festival nominees are really working hard for their votes! With just a little over a month left to vote, they've each created a video pleading their case. We previously wrote about their chance to win 1500 Euros earlier this month.

The first one on the scene was Olibith, with a sentimental video about the contest, set to the Carpenters. Next up was Baron Soosdon, letting you know that if you don't vote for him, a "terrible curse" will fall upon you. The only one missing was Dopefish, whom I had to chase down to make a video in order to be fair.

If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.

Bitfilm Festival nominees announced

Bitfilm, a festival that takes place in Hamburg, Germany, announced the shortlist today for their sixth annual event. Among the nominees are a whopping three from World of Warcraft. Despite WoW machinima only being a formidable contender in the last two years, Olibith took home the top prize last year with I'm Only Sleeping!

The WoW nominees for 2008 are:
From today until July 1st, you can sign up for an account and vote on your favorite machinima. The top prize takes home 1500 Euros and an award plaque with a suggestive looking female robot on it! However, voters also have a chance to win prizes based on active rating.

WoW Moviewatch: My Burning Valentine

In January 2006, a group of friends, including Dopefish and Malu05, decided to create a community machinima project, Nogg-aholic Collaboration, or NAC, to showcase World of Warcraft in ways that they felt had not been done before. Named after the time period in which it was filmed, February 2006, My Burning Valentine was intended to highlight what NAC was all about, as well as its guidelines. However, the more that they explored the depths of their creativity, the less that they wanted to show off this film!

As they continued to add to the guidelines for NAC, the release date was being pushed farther back. In the end, their interest waned, so they closed down the forum and moved on, leaving this video behind as a memory. For further explanation of the project, as well as more clips, check out Dopefish's video page for My Burning Valentine.

WoW Moviewatch: Among Fables And Men

The top winners of Warcraft Movies' Fabled Few continue to impress. First place in the drama category went to Dopefish for this video that pushes the boundaries of what you've seen before in WoW Machinima. No voice over, no text and no moving video. This entire tale is told using still images. And it's one of the best you'll see this year.

Budding machinimists often forget how important music and sound effects are to telling the story. Dopefish challenged himself by using only those two elements on his soundtrack. Add to that the innovative use of screenshots and you get a film that weaves a spell that draws you in. And isn't that what a good story should do?

Tomorrow, we'll be spotlighting the Grand Prize winner.

WoW Moviewatch: Sunday Break

The original video this is paying homage to is a machinima by Dopefish. Baron Soosdon has taken that original exploration concept in hand and with Snoman's updated model-work, provides us with an interesting machinima full of beautiful music and lovely dark imagery. While I've no idea if it was intended, the imagery makes me think of the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion. (I hope it looks half that cool!)

In any case, hats off to Baron Soosdon, Snoman, and Dopefish for their combined ideas that give us this lovely Sunday Break to enjoy!
