I bought a level 85 character, and I'm loving it

It's not a secret that I play other games, and one of my guilty pleasures has been EverQuest 2. It's a game that I've played off and on for many, many years -- never quite reaching the level cap, but never quite giving it up for good either. It's one of those things that I'll log in and enjoy for a few weeks, then grow tired of it and go back to a better MMO (World of Warcraft).

When I logged on two weeks ago for the first time in about six months, I discovered what Sony is calling "Heroic Characters." They're not a hero class like WoW (although they feel like them, as I'll explain later). Heroic Characters are characters that you can buy via microtransations that enter the game at level 85 with a full compliment of gear and EQ2's version of talent points.

I looked at it, thought about it for five minutes, and then spent 2,500 of Sony's store points I had saved up throughout the years. For about $25 worth of digital points, I grabbed a level 85 Wizard and logged on.

Were it not for work and BlizzCon, I'd never have logged off.

Breakfast Topic: How did you start WoW?

Time has passed in this game. People have histories, both personal with each other and in-game with their characters. These histories can be very telling not only about the individual, but about the progression of the game itself. For instance, my first character started out in Northshire in Elwynn Forest killing all the wolves he could get his warrior hands on. Now he's rampaging through the dungeon finder Titan's Gripping everything in existence.

But perhaps more interesting, at least to me, was how I got started in WoW in the first place. I originally began in 2004 by being very excited about EverQuest II, and only picked up WoW as something to try that was a little different. At the time I wasn't very happy with the cartoon like characters of WoW compared to EQII, and I didn't think the gameplay would be as hard core as EQII would be.

How wrong I was.

On that day in November 2004 when I picked up both WoW and EQII I had no idea that in the next five years my interest would shift entirely, and that so much of my time would be taken up by talking about everything Warcraft.

How did you get started in WoW? Are you where you thought you'd be when you first picked up the game?

Psiwave asks...

"Do you think Cataclysm is really just a sneaky way to release WoW2 without us noticing? A full talent rework for classes, a rebuild of the world for all levels of play and a reworking of stat allocation to name but a few changes. I get the feeling that Cataclysm will play more like a sequel than an expansion."

Why other MMOs remain the underdogs

Over at MMOG Nation Michael tries to answer the question of why Everquest 2 remains an underdog in the MMO market despite numerous updates and improvements to the game by SOE. And I've got to say I agree with his answer -- whether we're talking about Everquest 2, Lord of the Rings Online, or even Star Wars Galaxies (do people still play that game?). Despite how good other games may be, if all of your friends play World of Warcraft, I bet you're going to be playing World of Warcraft, too.

While MMOGCHART hasn't been updated in nearly a year now, their last set of data breaking down the number of active subscribers maintained by all of the major MMOs at the time showed World of Warcraft holding over 50% of the market, leaving a dozen games to split the remaining half of the market. And just looking at my circle of friends, all of them play World of Warcraft -- a couple of them play Everquest on the side, several of us play Lord of the Rings Online as well, and one dabbles in the world of Final Fantasy. But if I want to hang out with all of my friends, I've got to log on to World of Warcraft. So how's the next big thing going to break into the market when all of my friends -- and probably yours -- play WoW? I'm guessing it won't be able to simply be a Warcraft-alike, but be something so far beyond World of Warcraft today that it will draw in the same mass of subscribers WoW did in its initial release.

So what do you think the next big thing will be in the MMO market -- or is it so far off that we'll all just be playing a different Blizzard game by then? (I'm still waiting on World of Starcraft, thank you very much!
