WoW Moviewatch: Code Monkey

On this beautiful Sunday afternoon, we'll continue our Staff Picks series by sharing Robin Torres's favorite machinima. It's not functional or elegant but maybe manager wants to write machinima himself. Here's what Robin said about Code Monkey:

Code Monkey was first machinima I ever watched. It was also my first introduction to Jonathon Coulton's music. It's a fun song set to a fun video and still one of my favorites.

Experienced machnima viewers know that Spiffworld provides all the JoCo love you could ever want in machinima form. Plenty of WoW fans learned about the performer through Spiff's ambassadorial work.

WoW Moviewatch: Arms of Hades - The Touch

Let's keep this cartoon nostalgia train rolling, folks! Arms of Hades - The Touch is another 80s cartoon inspiration from David Nguyen, who was originally inspired by those amazing folks in Fifth Element. I'd say he's more than picked up his own steam now.

On the off chance you don't know the original, take some time and enjoy this epic scene from Transformers: The Movie. As a legit child of this era who remembers The Touch very, very well (and may even have danced to it at a homecoming), I'm forced to stand in awe and quietly salute you. Very well done, sir. You've got the touch.

WoW Moviewatch Staff Pick: Welcome to the Deadmines

Welcome to a WoW Moviewatch Staff Picks special! Each of our staff members will get the chance to feature one of their favorite videos, and tell us all why they love it. Mr. Ziebart goes first, and he chose: Welcome to the Deadmines. This is what Alex had to say about the video.

Welcome to the Deadmines was released before Cataclysm's remix of the dungeon. The first iteration of the Deadmines was near and dear to people like me, who had been playing the game since launch. Not only is Welcome to the Deadmines an excellent piece of machinima on its own, but it kicked me in the nostalgia, too.

Something about this video makes me want to dive right into Van Cleef's stomping grounds. Created by legendary machinima stars like Adrian Drott, Jesse Cox, Irdeen, Matt Greenburg, and more, Welcome to the Deadmines packs one heck of a talented punch.

Phat Loot Phriday: Armored Bloodwing

Phat Loot Phriday Armored Bloodwing
"Na na na na na na na na, batmount!" Throgg cried as he cruised the Armored Bloodwing in for an impressive landing. At least, impressive was probably Throgg's plan. In reality, the bat faceplanted into a bush with the grace of a hyperactive dwarf.

"What was that all about?" Lolegolas asked, watching the hefty orc pick himself up from the ground.

"Still getting the hang of that," Throgg muttered, swatting an errant leaf from his sinewed thigh. "Handles a little tight. The echo-location must be off. Which is funny because you wouldn't think locating echoes would be difficult for a bat."

For its part, the bat seemed nonplussed.

"Seriously, Throgg," the blood elf countered. "What in the heck is that thing?"

"What? Are you Alliance? Are you a gnome or something? What in the Twisting Nether do you think it is?" Throgg asked incredulously. "It's an Elune-praised bat mount."

"Thanks for that," Lolegolas muttered. "There's bound to be bat-complaints now."

Item Note: You can't have a bat mount without a few good bat-jokes to set up the bat-weekend. This bat mount is available in the Blizzard bat-store.

WoW Moviewatch: An Inconvenient Expansion

Today's machinima from Lagspike Films is one you've probably seen before. Released just a few weeks before the launch of Cataclysm, An Inconvenient Expansion brings the climate change discussion to Azeroth in a humorous way.

I remember when this machinima was first released, I was suspicious that I might be watching something I would hate. I've found discussing real world issues with WoW players often ends in disaster so I was wary when I saw a character, named Al Boar, correlating the rise in global temperature to the rise in vanity pets. To my pleasant surprise though, the whole machinima never really gets too serious and the script is quite funny.

Beyond that, I love the animation in this video. When things really get started I found myself impressed with a lot of little things ... From the way the grounds splits open, to the way Deathwing's silhouette perches atop a mountain. It looks great without a lot of attention being directed toward it.

WoW Moviewatch: Nobody's Quest Episode 1

Do you remember Nobody? How about Nobody's creator, Ninth Batter? Both are back with a story-driven machinima called Nobody's Quest Episode 1. With a definite plot, plenty of exposition, and actual narrative structure, Nobody's Quest already looks refreshing and exciting.

The first episode is only a few minutes long, but Ninth already has six episodes in the can. Keep checking back every week for the new episode. Hopefully, this kind of story video will get fans excited and we'll see many more in the future. My hat's off to Ninth Batter for reinvigorating this method of storytelling.

WoW Moviewatch: Lore According to Illidan

Illidan's life story is full of angst, pain, and some truly tragic decision making. Working with a psychiatrist, Mr. You Are Not Prepared relates the harshest moments in WoW melodrama in Lore According to Illidan. While I feel like the script could use a little bit of editing, this is a solid new format. My hat's off to Slightly Impressive for the idea.

The animation is pretty good, although the framing of Illidan on a couch didn't work super well. The overall approach works great, though, so I'm eager to see our gnome become a universal psychiatrist. I think she could really do Arthas some good.

WoW Moviewatch: BLIND

Has it really been six months since we last ran BLIND? Must be! We've now received a half dozen requests for this video, including a few from people who never saw it before. I guess Memorial Day weekend is a fair time to rerun the video. So sit back, and enjoy some pop-driven blood elf buttkickery.

The most painful part of the recent suggestions is that they used a duplicated YouTube video. I don't know why someone would steal the video and claim it as its own, but it's a shame. If you're going to use BLIND, please use the creator's original link.

WoW Moviewatch: ROFLMAO!

I can't remember the last time we ran this video, which is a shame since it's one of the breakthrough machinima hits that brought the hobby to the masses. And by the "masses," I mean me. One of Oxhorn's biggest hits, ROFLMAO remains as hilarious to this day.

Enjoy a few moments of silly WoW song. Sorry if it gets stuck in your head all weekend. Then again, it's better to have in your head that Tik Tok. ROFLMAO!

WoW Moviewatch: Black Angel

While the song is most famous for its presence in Lost Boys, Legs turned it into the soundtrack for Black Angel in 2008. For all that it's full of gothic imagery and moody images, I still love the vision of 3 blood elf angels floating in mid-air. Call me a sucker, but it's still one of my favorite tiny bits of machinima. All that being said, this video is 5 years old. It's just amazing how time flies.

WoW Moviewatch: Guards 3

Work Warning: Lots of cursing and vaguely adult themes. A touch on the adult side.

Ian Beckman is a man who delivers. Whether it's a surprising range of comedic voice acting or solid graphics that deliver the funny, his machinima always serves up more than a few laughs. Guards 3 continues to lampoon COPS in this wild World of Warcraft.

I like how the small vignette turns into a larger story, and I'll admit the final bit was my favorite. Whether that's because I harbor my own angst about the king, or just because it was the most straightforward joke, the utter defeat of the villain serves as warning to anyone who gets a name wrong.

WoW Moviewatch: The Adventures of Tinkerbottom Part 9

I space out how often I talk about The Adventures of Tinkerbottom because, while it's cool, there are too many videos to keep up here. But the interactive video just reached a major milestone: Tinkerbottom now must suffer a consequence.

If you've not been following along, the premise is fairly simple. The videos focus on Tinkerbottom and the choices he faces. Commenters basically vote or suggest what his action will be. It's like a crowdsourced Which Way book with a video component. All in all, it's a pretty interesting experiment and definitely worth your time to check out.

WoW Moviewatch: Not All Roleplay is Serious - Episode 7: NOOB

Work Warning: Minutely blue humor found herein.

It's been a while since we've seen a new video from Nixxiom (also known as SilverlinedPro). That makes this delicious bit of machinima even more tasty. With a somewhat painful look on those first seconds of a Tauren roleplayer's life, Not All Roleplay is Serious - Episode 7: NOOB demonstrates only the finest irony of a beginning roleplayer. Watch your flags!

WoW Moviewatch: Moves

It's not the Dance Studio but Moves by Oveoflod serves up the kinds of dance we've always wanted to see. When you start the video, make sure you give it a few second to get into the groove. This absolutely fantastic dance video serves up the rhythm, rattle, and ... well, just watch it. Moves will be the Dance Studio of your imagination.

WoW Moviewatch: Arm of Hades: Thundercats

This is a shot-for-shot recreation of the opening to Thundercats. David Nguyen did an astounding job of the video. It makes me both want to play WoW and watch the cartoon. It's just awesome. But there's more.

This is the kind of machinima and community involvement you hope to see. David directly credited Fifth Element for inspiring the video. It's always incredibly astounding to see machinima creators respond to one another this way. Congratulations to both David and Fifth Element on creating a cartoon machinima legacy.
