WoW Archivist: World of Warcraft patch 1.4

The WoW Archivist explores the secrets of World of Warcraft's past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW's history? What secrets does the game still hold?

Onwards we go through the tomes of World of Warcraft history. Today we come to patch 1.4, released May 2005, a short two months after patch 1.3. Patch 1.4 was the sort of patch we would be shocked to see nowadays: it contained no raid zones and no instances. It wasn't bare of content, though. Some highlights from this patch are:
  • The implementation of the earliest iteration of the honor system
  • Sweeping itemization changes in high end 5-man dungeons and raid zones
  • The outdoor area of Andorhal was revamped from, quite literally, the ground up
  • And the most controversial classic WoW change of them all: the succubus model was updated
Let's dig in. Just like our patch 1.3 discussion, our first page will be the patch notes (which are always massive) and the second page will be our in-depth look at the highlights.

Reminder: Gurubashi Beatdown II today

<It came from the Blog> is having its second Gurubashi Beatdown today. If you have a Horde character on US Zangarmarsh that is at least level 55 and has an epic mount (with stars or otherwise), you are welcome to join us for some games in the Gurubashi Arena.

We are also having another pre-event mixer today. This will take place near the fishing trainer in Orgrimmar and I hear that a few of my fellow WoW.com staffers will be showing up to chat with us. Here are the event stats:
  • When The mixer will begin today, Apr. 18, 5:00 p.m. EDT (2:00 p.m. PDT, 3:00 p.m. server time). We will head to Gurubashi Arena at 5:30 p.m.
  • Where Meet at the waterfall in the Valley of Honor, Orgrimmar on US Zangarmarsh-H.
  • Who Any character level 55 and up that is in good standing with the Horde. (If you are a DK, you need to have Thrall's blessing to join us.) Any level is invited to the mixer.
  • What First we will hang out, fish and chat at the mixer. Then we will ride to Gurubashi Arena together to play some games in which we kill each other.
  • How Send a tell to Robinella or any <It came from the Blog> member for an invite to the guild.
Just like last time, our first game will be to see how quickly you can punch Robinella, my death knight, to death. I'll reveal the remaining games as we play. Here are some snapshots of the last Gurubashi Beatdown:

Please join us on US Zangarmarsh-H in <It came from the Blog>. Ask Robiness, Robinemia or any member online for an invite. Guild ranks of Lurker or above have the ability to invite. You are all welcome as long as you play by our simple rules, that can be summed up with "Don't be a Funsucker!" Also, please see the guild FAQ for the most common questions.

It came from the Blog: Gurubashi Beatdown II

<It came from the Blog> didn't do a Noblegarden event this year because, well, a bunch of people fighting over egg spawns didn't sound like a whole lot of fun. But we are still having an event this month: our second Gurubashi Beatdown. After some peaceful fishing at the pre-event mixer, we will be traveling to Stranglethorn Vale to kill each other over and over and over and over. Here are the particulars:
  • When The mixer will begin on Sunday, April 18, 5:00 p.m.
I will be attending on Robinella, my DK. If you do not have a high enough character right now to join us, you have plenty of time to level a death knight before the event. Please see below for instructions as to how to get an invite to the guild to participate in these events and also to join in on the Choose My Adventure fun.

See you in Azeroth!

It came from the Blog: Gurubashi Beatdown

First an apology: I'm really sorry we didn't have an It came from the Blog Lunar Festival event. I and my family came down with a series of non-serious, but very symptom-heavy plagues that knocked me out of WoW for a few weeks. I didn't even get the event done on my main. /sadface But I'm back and ready to get beat up in retaliation... because it's time for a Gurubashi Beatdown.

This Saturday, bring your Death Knight, any level as long as Thrall has welcomed you to the Horde, and let's beat each other up in the Gurubashi Arena in Stranglethorn Valley. We'll also have another Mixer beforehand where you can rub elbows with some of the other WoW.com writers.
  • When: Saturday, March 20th at 5:30pm EDT (2:30pm PDT, 3:30pm realm time) and the mixer will be at 5pm EDT.
  • Where: Meet in front of Orgrimmar, Zangarmarsh U.S.
  • Who: Any Horde DK that is free from Arthas or any other level 55 and above Horde character.
  • What: After chatting it up with the WoW.com staffers, we will travel to the Gurubashi Arena and participate in some PvP games of my own devising.
More details are after the break.

New TCG expansion Blood of Gladiators out

Upper Deck has officially released the latest expansion in the WoW Trading Card Game -- the Blood of Gladiators is the game's eighth expansion set (can you believe this game has been around for three years already?), and features new PvP action, including a new Duel Faction Ally card and a new Arena setting in the Gurubashi Arena. There are three new characters in the game as well, coming straight from the pages of the World of Warcraft comic, with art by none other than Jim Lee. And of course it's got the loot cards we talked about earlier, including the Foam Swords rack and the Sandbox Tiger. Can't wait to see those in the game.

Booster packs from the set run about $4 in most places, though demand for the game can actually drive the prices up at retail if store owners feel they're running out too fast. Seems like, at this point, the WoW TCG has its fans, and the online game does as well, and sometimes the two are not the same people. Anyone been waiting for this release, or, eight times in, is yet another expansion set actually business as usual in the collectible card game?

WoW Moviewatch: Run all the way Gnome

The date on the video says 8/13/08, but we suspect it's actually meant to be September 13th, as that's when, this past weekend, WorldofWar.net did that Gnome race for a few beta keys. And this is a fun documentation of it -- the Gnomes all run from the front steps of Ironforge all the way down south to the Dark Portal, with a little fun bit at the beginning using real marathon audio.

Big player-run events like this are always a good time. We wonder if there's some way Blizzard could actually support this stuff with an ingame UI feature -- maybe show distance run or time traveled with an option? But even if they don't, players are creative enough to come up with all kinds of strange fun to have in Azeroth. Whether it's fun races like these or Gurubashi Arena challenges, one of the best things about a social game like this is all of the games players come up with on their own.

If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.

15 Minutes of Fame: Gurubashing his way to Arena Grand Master

15 Minutes of Fame is our look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes – both the renowned and the relatively anonymous. Tip us off to players you'd like to hear more about at 15minutesoffame (at) wowinsider (dot) com.

Meet Venwe of Spinebreaker, Arena Grand Master – nay, not of the Ring of Trials or The Circle of Blood or even the Ruins of Lordaeron. No, Venwe is the master of an arena you may not even have heard of: Stranglethorn Vale's Gurubashi Arena, home of the Gurubashi Arena Booty Run.

Every three hours in the heart of the Stranglethorn jungle, Short John Mithril bellows out the call to arms: "Arrr, Me Hearties! I be havin' some extra Treasure that I be givin' away at the Gurubashi Arena! All ye need do to collect it is open the chest I leave on the arena floor!" His summons sets off a true PvP free-for-all – players of both factions, including your own – in a race to recover and open the pirate's chest dropped at the center of the arena. Players like Venwe scrabble against friend and foe for bragging rights and a shot at the chest's booty -- except unlike Venwe, most players haven't succeeded more than 700 times.
