Faience's adventures in Outland: Welcome to the Cenarion Refuge

I've come through the Dark Portal and fought my way past legions of demons and inward through Hellfire Peninsula... all to get tired of the crowds and almost immediately relocate to the next zone over. That zone, Zangarmarsh, is everything Hellfire Peninsula is not, starting with the color palette. Immediately upon entering the zone, I found myself in Cenarion Refuge, a neutral faction that, no, does not care about that Cenarion Circle reputation you spent so long trying to gain.

Lucky for all of us, then, that reputation is more easily gained these days...

Adventures in Beta: The best little bugged item in Burning Crusade

Adventures in Beta returns from a long, WoWless holiday break to a finally playable 60 character! And boy, do we have a doozy of a horribly bugged beta item for you!

After only a few hours in the starting area, I began to notice a bunch of corpses of high level "Vengeful Unyielding Knights" hanging around the Thrallmar environment. This was slightly worrisome. Were we going to fight level 87s? How vengeful, exactly, were these guys? Really vengeful?

Luckily, a quick trip to the WoW Beta General forums solved my questions. The unyielding knights spawn off two Horde-only quest rewards, the Blade of the Unyielding and the Rod of the Unyielding. Like many other items, these weapons have a chance to proc and create some knights as guardians. Unlike many other weapons, the proc can happen off of anything (mounting, creating items, casting spells) and the guardians are set to the item level, 87, instead of the player's level.

I was interested in reproducing this effect, so I went out and did the quest for it myself. I looted a book off of the ghosts of some Alliance knights and then helped them summon an old enemy so they could get revenge on the person who killed them. It was a pretty cool quest, and I received both the Blade of the Unyielding and a round of applause from the dead Alliance. I equipped the sword and went out grinding. The knights didn't live long and I couldn't control them, but they killed things ridiculously quickly and the proc was near-constant. I doubt the bugged items will make it into live, but if it does ... hoo boy, alliance on PVP servers better learn to recognize it fast!

Curse offers hints on expansion World PVP

Those wacky kids over at Curse have posted a few impressions of the World PVP options in the Burning Crusade on their forums. Being as the Alpha is supposed to be closed, we're not completely sure how Blizzard feels about that, but considering they haven't been entirely forthcoming with info about World PVP, these impressions are better than nothing.

There are three zones covered here, and while the first two, Hellfire Peninsula and Zangamar Marsh, don't sound much different from what we have now in Eastern Plaguelands (the only difference being that in the Marsh, holding control points grants you not only a buff but access to a midzone graveyard), the third, in Nagrand, sounds much more interesting. Halaa is an entire controllable city held by whatever faction has grabbed it lately, and not only are there, Curse says, NPCs inside to turn in tokens and quests, but outside, on the four bridges that act as access points to the inner island, you'll be able to find "Wyvern Posts" at which you can hire flying mounts to use as bombadiers. Not only that, but there are guards inside the city that fight with or against you. Now that sounds cool-- it's like a whole other battleground, but in an overworld zone.

Curse also mentions new rewards specifically for World PVP. Just as you can loot turn-in tokens from fallen players now in AV, there will be new tokens and purchaseable, zone-based buffs and items for World PVP rewards as well. There's also a few notes about Arena PVP, but I get the feeling that until we see some real maps for the setups Blizzard is planning, we won't have a good idea of what kind of strategic play they're looking for. Still, this is definitely more than we've ever heard about the new World PVP before, and it's great to see that Blizzard is trying to formalize and encourage the gigantic battles that used to be a part of World PVP in the past.
