WoW Moviewatch: It's a Hard Gnome Life

It's a pleasure to say I've known Wowcrendor for years. Among the huge World of Warcraft community, I frequently hold him up as an example of working hard, constantly improving, and pursuing your craft with earnest devotion. Wowcrendor has achieved incredible success and he deserves every inch of it.

Not sure what I mean? Take a trip down memory lane and visit It's a Hard Gnome Life, one of Wowcrendor's first videos. Released in 2009, the video doesn't enjoy much of the sophistication, wry humor, and flair that we've come to expect from the man. Nonetheless, you can see the seeds of his comedy and recognize a few of his more famous voices.

Maybe, even, there's some lessons in It's a Hard Gnome Life and Wowcrendor for the rest of us. My hat's off to you, Wowcrendor. Keep on keeping on.

WoW Moviewatch: The Weapon Vendor

is back around with another, story-based piece called The Weapon Vendor. It's a little more reminiscent of It's a Hard Gnome Life than his How-to series. However, instead of following the development of an Alliance gnome, The Weapon Vendor follows the life struggles of a Horde orc.

The Weapon Vendor still shows the loving fondness for the game that permeates all of Wowcrendor's work. And, like his previous video, he's highlighting a subtle part of Azeroth that we don't necessarily think about. In this case, he's examining the auction house, and how a poor orc could go through the ebb and flow of success and failure by following its fickle economy.

There might be more short story style videos from Wowcrendor in the future, so it could be interesting to see where this goes.

WoW Moviewatch: World of Warcraft Instructional Video

You might remember Wowcrendor from It's a Hard Gnome Life. That piece was a comedy satire about many of WoW's most interesting little quirks. Well, Wowcrendor's back, with a new piece that will help us cynics have a cold chuckle at our own folly. The World of Warcraft Instructional Video actually had me laughing out loud.

This simple instructional video involves brief cuts from gameplay, but also features two very important voiceovers. The first voice is "Billy," a complete and total newb to the game. Billy's not even sure what the difference between melee and ranged DPS. The instructor, by comparison, shares a deeply voiced "insider's view" of the game. The instructor's helping Billy with everything from how to name his character ("Orcosaurus") to how to avoid grouping with PUGs.

The video is satire, and insightful satire at that. Almost every joke and instructional portion made me chuckle, thinking of some of the more hostile and unhelpful responses I've seen in Barrens chat. Part of the reason I find it so funny isn't that it's unreasonably over the top, but that it really seems, sometimes, like there's someone teaching players to act this way. It's like this video could be real, and that frightens me.

WoW Moviewatch: It's a Hard Gnome Life

Wowcrendor put It's a Hard Gnome Life up over at WarcraftMovies. To sum up, it's a comedy piece about the long, trouble-filled life of a gnome named Gnomeosaurus. The protagonist is the child of Mamagnome and Papagnome, and later goes on to himself parent Gnomejr. Your mileage on this video is going to vary widely.

This is not a movie for dazzling special effects or high end sountracks. All of the graphics are fairly straightforward gameplay footage, including a view of the user's mouse zipping about the screen. But you know what? That's cool for this. Nothing about this movie is intended as anything except an exceedingly tongue-in-cheek joke. The whole thing is obviously not meant for anything but sarcastic fun. C'mon. It's about a character named Gnomeosaurus.

The best joke in it, in my opinion, is the gag about Devilsaur-shaped cookies with a gnome head on top. The MS-Paint jokes, the sloppy cut-overs. . .the whole thing is just about goofy puns and giggles. My only complaint about it, though, is that the piece runs a little long for its style. Clocking in a little over six minutes, I'm not sure its humor can be sustained for the whole length.
