WoW Moviewatch: Hoodoo Teleshopping - The Deadmurloc

One of the mainstays at BlizzCon is the machinima contest – talented artists submit their movie ahead of the convention in hopes of winning fame and prizes. This year's BlizzCon is no different, and we're sure to see some great videos during the largest gathering of WoW players outside of Azeroth. Over the next few days let's take a look back at some of the winners and runner ups of last year's movie competition.

Hoodoo Teleshopping - The Deadmurloc(tm) is a video that has gained significant gravitas with recent events, due to the death of Billy Mays. No? Well, in the very least, it's a poignant commentary on the commercialism of modern America. No? Okay, but it's still pretty darn funny. It won a Runner-up mention in last year's BlizzCon machinima contest.

The voice is sometimes a little tough to make out, but the overall video is well done. I found it to be a whole lot of fun, and I tip my hat to Kilh for his creative work. Featuring one of the most hated critters in WoW as a sexy sales pitch is brilliant, and I think his video's graphics tie the whole idea together very well.

WoW Moviewatch: Forgotten

Today's machinima scored second place in WarcraftMovie's Shrieking Shorties contest. Kilh Machinima created Forgotten as the trailer to a movie that will never be made. While the author had a much fuller story and script in mind, he had to basically toss that aside and start from scratch due to the contest's time limit.

This trailer, like the Orchard, makes very good use of horror tropes. Tense scenes are filmed through short, jarring cuts. Since the viewer (presumably) is accustomed to WoW's graphics, slight alterations and surreal shots of the scenery provide a disjointed feel to what you're seeing. And, of course, the creator uses first-person perspective at the end to help provide the trailer's "shock."

The story didn't really compel me, though I was definitely impressed by the visuals. But that's kind of how horror trailers work anyway, and I think Kilh did a great job using that style to compel the viewer.

WoW Moviewatch: Hoodoo Teleshopping - The Deadmurloc

Seen commercials for the ShamWow? Well, today Kilh Machinima brings you its Azerothian equivalent in Hoodoo Teleshopping - The Deadmurloc(tm), his entry for the BlizzCon movie contest. Be warned: you must reconcile yourself with the idea that, although this version of Azeroth has television, it doesn't have a better way to clean your house than with a rehydrated dead murloc. Hoodoo Teleshopping is a Troll-run version of Home Shopping Network which demos the Deadmurloc product (don't forget the trademark) right before your eyes and shows you how the murlocs are harvested in cartoony, gory detail.

I found the background music to be too distracting, competing with the already-variable levels on the voice acting, so sometimes it was hard to follow the sales pitch especially from the gravelly-voiced Troll salesman. The visuals are well done, though, and the effect of putting the HSN-style border around the image is slick. Kilh says it only took him 4.5 days to finish the production in order to meet the contest deadline. But hey, you can't argue with getting a Big Flat Rock for FREE. Now what would you pay?

WoW Moviewatch: EPIXX, or Too Fast For Love

Back in July, I wrote about the Warcraftmovies Synergy contest. Machinimators were given the choice between two unintentionally horrible scripts and were asked to follow them to the letter. In honor of that contest, Baron Soosdon, half of the winning duo, decided to create his own imba machinima contest. Offering up a top prize of being uuiU'd by Soosdon himself, he cranked out a script in just 15 minutes!

It's been a while since I wrote about Kilh, of Rock 'n' Troll fame. He noticed the contest with a little over three days left until the deadline. Of course, being the talented filmmaker that he is, he decided to give it a go -- with amazing results. When asked for comment, he stated that the script made no sense, so he just followed it as if it were step-by-step instructions.

Featuring a voiceover by yours truly, EPIXX - Too Fast For Love is ... something else. Try to imagine toilet gnomes, a ruined PR campaign (a nod to one of my Moviewatch posts), an epic purple Wand of Not Burning Books (the part that I voiced), a Titanic spoiler, and a bad 80s song in the credits that isn't a Rickroll. Those are just some of the highlights of an intentionally awesome script!

WoW Moviewatch: Rock 'n' Troll trailer

There are few trailers that leave me anxious to see the final result. However, Kilh is a genius. From the beginning to the end, this trailer is just full of brilliance. If you can believe it, this was his first work using Adobe After Effects! You can read about his movie progress on his blog.

I asked Kilh what the machinima would be about, and his description left me scratching my head. Apparently the Rock 'n' Troll plot involves a banker that dreams of being a rockstar whose raptor is stolen by evil murlocs that plan to brainwash the world. Did I mention the superevil mini-zombie-tauren minions? He's going for the cheesy 80s B-movie look and feel. I can't wait!
