BlizzCon 2010: Las Vegas Convention Center retracts statements

Update: It's looking like Anaheim again.

For the past day has been hard at work getting the story straight on the discrepancies between what the Las Vegas Convention Center was saying about BlizzCon 2010, and what Blizzard was saying. Until recently, the LVCC had been telling us, and others, who inquired that BlizzCon 2010 was being held there July 30th and 31st. Blizzard was, more or less, denying it. Given both organizations are quite large and reputable, this was quite a confusing situation.

However as of this afternoon, the Las Vegas Convention Center emailed us to let us know that due to their human error, the confirmation they were giving was false.

According to the LVCC, Blizzard and the LVCC had spoken once about having BlizzCon 2010 in Las Vegas, and a hold was placed on those dates as a marketing tactic to entice Blizzard to the area. However, that hold was inadvertently turned into a confirmed booking, leading to the inaccurate confirmations and resulting issues.

The LVCC has apologized for the confusion, and thus ends the saga of BlizzCon in Las Vegas.

BlizzCon 2010: July in Las Vegas [Updated x5]

According to the Las Vegas Convention Center website, Blizzard will be holding BlizzCon 2010 in Las Vegas July 30th and 31st. Upon inquiry, the Convention Center was able to verify the dates and that Blizzard is running the event. However, Blizzard has yet to announce this themselves. We have contacted Blizzard, and we'll post anything they have to say on the matter.

BlizzCon is the major fan convention for all of Blizzard's games. Past BlizzCons have launched all the WoW expansions, including Cataclysm this last August. BlizzCon 2009 had approximately 20,000 attendees. According to the Convention Center's website, BlizzCon 2010 will be bringing in 30,000 people.

You can place money on the bet that will be there covering everything. In fact, we'll meet you at the blackjack tables.

Viva Las Vegas, baby!

Update 4:15 p.m. PST: Blizzard has responded to let us know that they haven't announced any details regarding their next BlizzCon, and that they recommend everyone refrain from making any travel plans at this time. However, the Las Vegas Convention Center has confirmed this booking and continues to list it on their calendar.

Update 10:50 p.m PST
: Blizzard has contacted us further and said "As we haven't announced any details about the next BlizzCon, we can say it won't be held in Las Vegas." We're currently in contact with the LVCC and Blizzard, and will hopefully be able to provide more details on exactly what's going on in the future.

Update 9:30 a.m. PST, 11-13-09: The listing from the LVCC has disappeared. However, here's a copy of the page.

Update 12:30 p.m. PST, 11-13-09: The LVCC has retracted their statement. Please see the additional information.

AIAS nominates Wrath of the Lich King for three awards

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences has honored Wrath of the Lich King with three different nominations in their yearly awards. The game was nominated for both the Computer Game of the Year and Massively Multiplayer Online Game of the Year (both of which are pretty obvious choices, though as an expansion pack, it's probably not a complete shoo-in for either category), and also for Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition. That one's not really a surprise either, though, when you consider that the music in the game is terrific, and Wrath's music especially is great.

At this point, considering this is an expansion pack to a four year old game, it really does seem like it would be an honor just to be nominated for these. But we'll see -- the winners will be announced at the 2009 D.I.C.E. Summit, on February 18th-20th in Las Vegas. Good luck to Blizzard and their teams.
