Khadgar is ready to send you into Draenor, mount and collision restrictions

If you've stopped by the Dark Portal in the past several hours, you may have noticed some changes. Alliance and Horde forces have begun to push the Iron Horde back closer to the portal. Khadgar, along with Thrall and Maraad, have taken up station in front of the portal.

When the clock strikes 12 a.m. PST (North America) or 12 a.m. CET (Europe), you'll be prompted to visit Khadgar in the Blasted Lands to start your journey into Draenor. In past expansions, the NPC which gave you the first quest tended to be a bottleneck of sorts. Usually it was because of some unsavory individuals who decided to sit on their oversized mammoth mounts right on top of said NPC.

You'll be happy to know that Khadgar has collisions around him, meaning no one can sit directly on top of him. And best of all, mounting is disallowed in a 15 yard radius around Khadgar. Sorry to disappoint you, mammoth trolls.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls is coming your way today

If you've been waiting on the edge of your seat for Blizzard's release of Diablo 3's Reaper of Souls expansion -- and with content scarce in WoW these days, who isn't? -- your wait is nearly over. However, depending on where you are, your launch time may be a bit different:
  • For Asia, the expansion will be available to play at 11:00 a.m. PDT on March 24.
  • For Europe, the expansion will be available to play at 4:00 p.m. PDT on March 24.
  • For the Americas, the expansion will be available to play at 9:00 p.m. PDT on March 24.
To be ready to play come launch time, make sure your client is up to date (launch the client to check for updates or download it if you don't have it), be sure you've downloaded the big 2.01 patch (again, just launch your client to check), and be sure you've ordered your copy of Reaper of Souls. Then all you need to do is be logged in come launch time and you'll be ready to jump right into new gameplay. For more tips on surviving launch day, check out Blizzard's launch to-do list.

And, of course, happy demon slaughtering, everyone!

Maximising your gaming endurance for that precious realm first

Realm First racer Derevka with endurance tips for launch day ANY
Derevka, of Tales of a Priest fame, is looking to add a string to his bow by joining the race for Realm First level 90. He's already one of the top Discipline priests out there, and will be engaging in the leveling battle along with his guild, Something Wicked.

Mists' launch is at 3.00am in Derevka's local time, and anyone who has tried to engage in a Realm First, or even World First race before will know full well that it's a long hard slog. This time around is no different, with a massive 97.5 million XP to get through from 85 to 90. We will be speaking to Derevka after his race attempt to get the low-down on all his innovative tactics and tips, so be sure to check back for that.

But today's post concerns you, the player. Staying up for as long as it takes to get from 85 to 90 is not something anyone does every week, and it can be a real endurance test for body and mind. As gamers ourselves, who understand what it's like, we would never tell you not to do it, so we're going to talk instead about ways you can do it better. How can you increase your endurance and mental acuity for the race to 90?

Breakfast Topic: Making plans for the launch of Mists

Breakfast Topic Making plans for Mists
A couple of months back, a coworker and I were discussing possible release dates for Mists of Pandaria. Ever hopeful, I declared that the next World of Warcraft expansion would see a mid- to late-August launch, whereas he felt it would more than likely be in either September or October.

Well, now that July is almost over with and we have nary heard a peep from Blizzard, I think it's safe to say that an August launch is looking increasingly unrealistic. We still have to have the pre-launch patch, as well as a launch event to get the ball rolling. Still, I remain hopeful that by some fluke of time and space warping, we will see Mists drop before the leaves do.

Regardless of when the game actually releases, I have banked up some vacation time at work, and I plan on taking at least two days toward getting my character to 90 and starting the gear grind. I did something similar for Cataclysm, and I absolutely loved it. The feeling of jumping in heroics a couple days after launch, figuring out those brand new fights with random strangers, seeing a shiny new piece of loot that you could actually use -- the whole experience was refreshing. Post-launch play feels like a totally different game than the pre-expansion lull that we're currently experiencing.

So, readers, what plans do you have for launch? Are you also impatiently waiting for a release date so you can plan to be "sick" for a couple days? Have any get-togethers or LAN parties on the books? How about venturing around the lost continent of Pandaria while laying on a sandy beach somewhere?

Massively's Dungeons and Dragons Unlimited launch day round-up

Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited goes free-to-play today, so we put together a little round-up of our best guides for this new content. Maybe you're confused on how the new DDO Store will work, or have heard rumors about what aspect of the game is truly free-to-play. Massively has you covered!
Massively's DDO Unlimited developer tour
Love can sometimes be a fickle thing, but I'm pretty sure that I love what Turbine has done with the DDO Store in Dungeons and Dragons Online Unlimited. I'll admit that initially I was a little concerned with the concept of an in-game store, but after playing with it at bit and asking some questions my fears have pretty much melted away.
Massively Speaking Episode 57: DDO with Jerry Snook
Massively Speaking Episode 57 returns this week with an entire episode dedicated to Dungeons and Dragons Online and their recent announcement about going free-to-play. Shawn is joined by DDOCast host Jerry Snook as they discuss the ins and outs, good and bad of a 3-year-old game going F2P.
The pros and cons of free to play Dungeons and Dragons Online
Dungeons and Dragons Online going free to play is undoubtedly an awesome announcement. But exactly how awesome of an announcement is it? Yesterday we were all over the announcement, covering the basics of what can be expected with this changeover from subscription based to free to play. But now, I'd like to break that down even further, and really look at the changes in an in-depth manner.
DDO goes F2P: An interview with Turbine
As the news hit yesterday concerning Dungeons and Dragons Online going free-to-play, many MMO gamers collectively rejoiced, while others didn't. The idea of this hybrid business model is wonderful for those who have yet to experience DDO, as it now gives them a chance to play the game as long as they'd like, with no level cap restrictions for absolutely no cost. This means no credit card info changing hands, no commitments to a monthly fee and the implied need to "get your money's worth" and no real need to quit the game if you can't afford it. But it can't be that easy, can it? Well, there's a slight catch.

Breakfast Topic: Faction Pride

I remember the night of January 15, 2007. I stood outside a game store in the bitter cold anxiously awaiting the doors opening so we could get our hands on a shiny new copy of the freshly launched Burning Crusade. There were probably thirty people there, and of course the conversation was all about World of Warcraft. The air was tense between proud members of the Alliance and the Horde. Most players identify strongly with one faction or the other. It was strange to me how the faction rivalry crossed over into the real world.

I play Horde. I've been known to wear a t-shirt that says "Real Women Roll Horde." I've tried playing Alliance characters, and it just doesn't work for me. My real-world friends who play WoW also play on Horde side. I gravitate toward fellow followers of Thrall. Recently I've started a new job where a number of people play the game. Much to my surprise, I've found some Ally players that I actually like.
