Currency Changes coming for Patch 6.0

We mentioned already that item upgrades would become purchasable with Lesser Charms of Good Fortune. Now, Blizzard has clarified a host of changes to how currency will work in Patch 6.0 and beyond. In addition to being used to upgrade items, Lesser Charms will now be directly tradeable for Warforged Seals, and there's no longer a restriction on how many you can get in a week - You can dump literally all of your Lesser Charms to Seals if you so desire.

Other changes include the utter removal of Valor and Justice points (not Honor/Conquest, those remain), the removal of the Test of Valor component of the legendary cloak quest (you can still get the cloak, you just don't need to get the Valor points first), and the switching of all honor/justice items over to costing gold to purchase, including heirloom items.

You'll still be able to buy item upgrades and heirlooms in 6.0

There are lots of changes headed to WoW in patch 6.0, but perhaps the scariest change is the removal of valor and justice points, which have served as a primary form of in-game currency for quite a while. However, Blizzard staff have been working to reassure people that the loss of these currencies isn't the end of the world (or even the end of World of Warcraft).

Almost everything you'd currently buy with valor or justice you'll be able to buy with gold moving forward, so heirlooms will have a gold cost. The one exception is with item upgrades, which you'll be able to purchase with Lesser Charms of Good Fortune (for Mists gear only; Warlords gear won't be upgradable) after patch 6.0 lands. Though the number may change before release, currently the cost is 50 charms per upgrade, with no cap on the amount of charms or how many upgrades you can do a week. Additionally, with valor being gone, the Test of Valor phase of the legendary quest chain is being removed. For those of you trying to level and gear alts before Warlords of Draenor arrives, this will be a big help -- provided patch 6.0's arrival date leaves enough time to make use of them.

Patch 5.4: In-game store announced

We've been speculating about it since the experience potion was datamined, and now we have an announcement. Yes, Virginia, there will be an in-game store. Bashiok gives us the details on what the current plan for the feature is, including a way to get lesser charms of good fortune, and the big news is that the feature will be rolled out first on Asian realms.
Bashiok - 5.4 In Game Store 100% XP buff?
First, we'll be testing the in-game store with some new kinds of items we're looking into introducing (in Asian regions, at the outset) based on player feedback: specifically, an experience buff to assist with the leveling process, as well as an alternate way to acquire Lesser Charms of Good Fortune. We've had a lot of requests from players in different regions for convenience-oriented items such as these, and as with other new ideas we've introduced as WoW has evolved-including Pet Store pets, mounts, and more-your feedback plays a hugely important part in determining what we add to the game.

So as we speculated before, the experience buff is going to be region specific, rolling out in Asian realms first. No word on when/if these features will make their way to Europe or North America. It's a move that I have to admit makes sense considering that most of the recent subscriber drop was reported to be in Asia. Asian realms use a different business model where you pay by the hour, and new players are not willing to play hourly in order to catch up with existing players. Whether or not a version of the store with the various mounts and pets available on the website will debut at the same time as the convenience items like lesser charms and the new XP buff is yet to be determined.

What's the best way to get Lesser Charms of Fortune?

What's the best way to get Lesser Charms of Fortune
What's the best way to get Lesser Charms of Fortune every week? Although Blizzard recently reduced the amount of Lesser Charms of Fortune players need each week (by lowering the requirement for the weekly quest Mogu Coins of Fate from 90 charms to 50 charms) we've still got to get them somewhere. So what's the best way?

Prior to patch 5.3, it seemed like everyone was swearing by pet battles. Players were claiming they'd earned hundreds to thousands of Lesser Charms just killing critters in Stormwind. A hotfix eventually nerfed the drop chance for Lesser Charms in lower level pet battles, but higher level pet battles are still rewarding charms to anyone who wants to put in the time. Is it still worth it?

Patch 5.3 has also added a couple of changes to Lesser Charm collection to really mix up the equation. Level 90 creatures that are outdoors in the world now have a chance to drop Lesser Charms of Fortune, while rare spawns in Pandaria and bosses in Battlefield: Barrens are guaranteed to always drop the charms. The result of this? Hordes of players in Northern Barrens farming Lesser Charms off the new Kor'kron mobs there.

Patch 5.2 hotfixes for April 22

Twin Consorts
Some hotfixes went live today after the server restart. The big one that has my guildmates jumping up and down with glee is the change to the cost of Mogu Runes of Fate - they now cost 50 Lesser Charms of Good Fortune, down from 90 previously. Now, I do lots of dailies, so I couldn't get rid of my Lesser Charms fast enough even before the price nerf, but this is a great quality of life change that will give people more Runes of Fate to spend on chances for gear.

In addition, players picked from different realms will now be able to get loot and bonus rolls off of Oondasta and Nalak, and there are some minor nerfs to the Twin Consorts fight in Throne of Thunder. The Sinister Primal Diamond has also had some tweaks to its activation rate, particularly for fire mages. The full blue text is below the cut.

Patch 5.2: Valor and Conquest Points will be reset

Valor and Conquest reset for patch 52
Given that patch 5.2 includes a new raid and a new PvP season, it is no great surprise that Valor and Conquest points are being reset. However, one element of said reset is not proceeding quite how recent arrivals to Azeroth might expect.

Blizzard
PvE
  • Valor -> Justice
All Valor is converted to Justice
  • Justice -> Gold
Justice above the 4000 cap is converted to gold at a rate of 47 silver per point
So let's say the realms go down for the 5.2 patch and you have 450 Valor and 3800 Justice. Because of the 4000 Justice cap, you'd log back in after the patch is released with 0 Valor, 4000 Justice, and be 117 gold and 50 silver richer after the conversion.

With 5.2 we won't be changing current Valor items to cost Justice, but they will be much cheaper (discounts from 50-75% off their current costs). You'll need to acquire Valor after the patch is released to buy pieces for their discounted rate, or to buy the new 5.2 Valor items, but we're also introducing new items to spend your Justice on, including heirlooms and Pet Battle stones.

This seems to follow the logic of Blizzard's raid nerf strategy, where players' prior efforts are not wholly negated, but will doubtless ruffle a few feathers. There is also further information provided about Charms, and PvP points.

Patch 5.2 PTR: Updated abilities and quality of life changes for pet battles

Patch 52 PTR Updated abilities and quality of life changes for pet battles

I find myself logged onto a different character every time I'm doing a round of pet battle dailies. It shouldn't be an issue, because pets are account bound, but there's just one little thing: Battle Pet Bandages. I never earn any on my main character -- maybe it's bad luck. It's very frustrating to end up with a defeated team, Revive Battle Pets on cooldown, and no stable master nearby. Oh, and no bandages!

Well, it feels like the devs really have been listening to the battle pet community, because they released a few quality of life updates on the PTR that (mostly) will make pet battlers happy campers.
  • Battle Pet Bandages now stack and are Bind to Account.
  • Level-capped players will now have a chance to earn Lesser Charms of Good Fortune after winning a pet battle versus a pet within 5 levels of the highest level pet on their team. Higher-level pets will offer a better chance to earn a charm.
  • Winning a pet battle versus a team within 5 levels of the player's highest-level pet will now award player experience.
I'm so happy to see that pet bandages will be Bind to Account. Being able to funnel every precious bandage to one character will make things much easier -- especially for the altoholics out there. And three huge huzzahs to earning stuff while battling pets! It takes quite a bit of time to grind every pet battle achievement, even with power leveling newbie pets. So, earning rewards normally reserved for playing through PvE content turns pet battling into time well spent. I'm tempted to level a character solely through pet battles, now that winning one will grant player experience!

You can check out the full list of updated pet battle patch notes at the official site, but to make things easier we've compiled the complete list of notes after the break.

Patch 5.2 Prep: Get ahead of the game

Isle of Thunder
Patch 5.2 will bring new dailies, new factions, another raid, and a kitchen sink. It's pretty much a super patch. With so many additions, you may start to feel overwhelmed at the thought of class changes on top of new grinds -- and you know, pets and stuff. Never fear, we're here to help you prepare! Before we get too deep into this, remember that everything we've learned about patch 5.2 is from the PTR. Things can change!
  • Farm (or buy) Ghost Iron. Both blacksmithing and engineering will see new unique crafting materials similar to the scribe's Scroll of Wisdom -- Lightning Steel Ingot and Stabilized Lightning Source, respectively. Both require 10 Ghost Iron bars, so snag some Ghost Iron now, and use some of it to transmute into Living Steel. Many new crafted items will require it.
  • Get ahead in your Wrathion quests. In 5.2, Wrathion will ask for 40 Trillium Bars in a quest on the way to the legendary meta gems, so start gathering the ore now to get a head start.
  • Get your Tillers rep to Exalted and unlock all plots. Although farming may not be appealing to everyone, Tillers rep is one of the easiest to max out. At Exalted, we'll be able to use work orders to gain rep in patch 5.2.

Patch 5.1: Lesser Charms of Good Fortune to become a currency

Lesser Charms a currency in 51
Blizzard Lead Systems Designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street tweeted today that the prayers of players who are running a lot of dailies with little bag space, and cursing the huge stacks of Lesser Charms of Good Fortune, are being answered.

The items, which currently only stack to 180, and are amassed in their thousands by doing dailies, will most likely be converted into a currency for patch 5.1 according to this tweet from Ghostcrawler:
What this means is that they will leave your bag and move into the area where your gold, justice points, valor points and so on are stored. This means more bag space, and that's always a good thing!

Mists of Pandaria is here! The level cap has been raised to 90, many players have returned to Azeroth, and pet battles are taking the world by storm. Keep an eye out for all of the latest news, and check out our comprehensive guide to Mists of Pandaria for everything you'll ever need to know.

Breakfast Topic: Little changes you want in Patch 5.1

Breakfast Topic Little changes you want in Patch 51
I will admit, as much as I love new patches, I can't get too excited about the new content coming in patch 5.1. I'm not even halfway done with all the new Mists of Pandaria content. I have dailies to run, valor points to earn, raids to finish. How can I get on the patch 5.1 train yet?

That said, I still love speculating on changes. Right now, however, I'm not focused on the big stuff, like massive balance changes and new content. I'm thinking of the little tweaks they could make that would really help me out.

I think the biggest things for me revolve around bag space. I'd love to see Lesser Charms of Good Fortune turn into currency so they didn't clutter up my bags so much. While you're at it, make Restored Artifacts into currency too. For that matter, give me a nice, simple, 24 or 26 slot bag recipe using Windwool Cloth so I'm not stuck saving up expensive mats and frantically grinding August Celestials rep on my tailor just for a chance at more bank space sometime before next year.

What little changes, changes that don't really affect balance or add major swathes of new content, would you like to see in patch 5.1?
