Hearthstone live stream scheduled for July 26

Blizzard has announced a new Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft livestream scheduled for 10:00 am PDT Friday, July 26th on their channel. The broadcast will focus especially The Forge in Hearthstone, one of the four game modes available. The Forge mode in particular is designed to test players' deck-building skills, by providing a set of cards at a match's beginning from which the participants must then build the deck they use in the match. Once a player has completed their set of Forge duels they are allowed to keep the cards they used to build their decks.

So far this particular mode has not been showcased, so this Friday's cast will be the first we've seen of it in action. The developers also plan to discuss some of the evolution of The Forge, and how they've tweaked and changed it since the mode was first announced. Make sure to mark your calenders for 10:00 am PDT this coming Friday, and learn all about The Forge mode in Hearthstone.

Beta Testing 101: How to stream your beta sessions

I've recently gotten into livestreaming. If you visit my channel on Own3d, you can see some hilarious and heart-wrenching wipes that I've recorded in heroic Dragon Soul. If you're into League of Legends, you can see a few games there (900 ELO bracket, represent)! I'm making an effort to stream our raiding attempts and narrating as I go. Did you know WoW Insider has a livestream page over at Twitch? (Subscribe to that, too!)

Today, I'll go over some of the tools and techniques for streaming so that your viewers can watch a polished live stream of you and your activities. I believe the best live streams are of players who are both entertaining and educational. I like watching different player perspectives so that you can see what's going on from their angle and gaining an understanding of what they go through.

I highly recommend using Xsplit as the program to stream with. You don't have to buy any licensing, but it's not a bad idea to invest for the additional audio quality if streaming is an activity you think you'll get into.

Once you have the program downloaded and configured, the next step is to settle on a streaming service. The two biggest ones out there are Own3d and Twitch. Either service will work. Both services have a revenue stream program making it possible to make a money on the side based on the amount of viewers your stream gets.

WoW Insider Live Stream: Hour of Twilight

The patch 4.3 PTR is really rolling along now! Blizzard has opened another new heroic dungeon for testing: this time, it's the Hour of Twilight, the third (chronologically) Dragon Soul heroic. We've assembled a crack 5-man team to conquer the dungeon and give you a nice in-depth preview. Join me, Mat McCurley, Matt Rossi, and Alex Ziebart in our live stream right up there!

Update: The stream has ended for the night; thanks for tuning in! You can still watch the recording of our instance runs if you so desire, and it is embedded right above.

Patch 3.3 PTR:'s stream of the Frozen Halls

We ran our livestream of the Halls of Reflection on the PTR yesterday, and other than one little hitch (I figured I'd save us all the trouble of raiding the Lich King and just jump in and take him down myself, with disastrous consequences), it went pretty well. Turns out you need to run through the main quest to unlock the last two Frozen Halls instances, so we ended up doing all three: Forge of Souls and Pit of Saron on normal, and then the Halls of Reflection on both normal and Heroic. On the way, you can see all of the bosses, dropped loot, the various lore and questlines that weave throughout the new 5-man, and the final epic confrontation.

Obviously, considering this is straight video of these instances (with commentary and audio from the game), these things are full of spoilers -- if you don't want to know what happens when you enter Icecrown Citadel, steer clear. That said, the video we recorded is after the break. You don't have to watch the whole thing (in fact, at over two hours, you'd be crazy to), as I've tagged the Forge of Souls run, the Pit of Saron run, and the final heroic Halls of Reflection run on their own. Clicking those links or the markers on the video below should take you to the specific parts of the video. Enjoy.

Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to Arthas.'s Guide to Patch 3.3 will keep you updated with all the latest patch news.

Halls of Reflection, the 5-man in which we're going to face down Arthas (finally -- we've been waiting for this moment since the end of Warcraft III) is now live on the PTR, and the staff of is going to head on in there to see what there is to see. And you get to watch -- we'll be streaming our run of the brand new 5-man this Friday afternoon, starting at noon Pacific / 3pm Eastern. We'll be live on our Ustream page, with full in-game video and commentary from yours truly, as five intrepid bloggers go and see what the Wrath of the Lich King really looks like.

Of course there will be spoilers, although if you're interested in seeing what the PTR has to offer, this will be as good an opportunity as any to do it. We've embedded the Ustream feed after the break on this post, so just come back here on Friday at noon to jump in, chat with us and other viewers live, and check out the action. If you have the Ustream iPhone app installed, you should be able to see it on there as well, so if you're out and about that afternoon, you can still watch. And we'll be recording the whole thing on Ustream, so if you can't watch it live, you will be able to come back later and check it out for yourself. Should be fun -- we'll see you back here on Friday afternoon at 3pm Eastern.

WWI streaming reliability disappoints

It's not like we've been awake since the wee hours waiting for a big announcement or anything. And it's certainly not like there was a huge dev panel with Tom Chilton, whose every word we hung on about class changes. But as your intrepid WoW Insider staff huddles around the news room viewers to get you the latest information from the 2008 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, we're encountering the same problem as everyone else. The streaming live feed offered by Octoshape and Blizzard is kind of letting us down.

I suppose some of the technical difficulties are unavoidable. I have to assume the technology is pretty complicated. But the problems range from audio and video randomly cutting out, to Octoshape's viewing slots being filled by too many users. This is a little surprising, since Octoshape had good performance for Blizzcon and even GotFrag. Just as frustrating, the Octoshape web site doesn't have any information about what was going wrong.

On the other hand, since Tom Chilton stepped off stage, the stream has been a lot more reliable. They've either fixed the problems, or the number of viewers has stepped down since the WoW discussion has ended. Here's hoping the better performance lasts.
