Patch 2.4's Magtheridon: The new Onyxia?

Now there's a face only an infernal overlord could love. You may have already heard that Magtheridon will be made easier in patch 2.4, but it looks like Blizzard's adding a few more goodies to make him more enticing to everyone. World of Raids has gotten news from a couple raid groups who have taken him down on the Test server, and it seems he's gotten a few other loot changes as well.

First of all, he drops more of the ultimate shiny stuff, 25 gold per raid member by some reports. Taking down a quick raid boss and getting 2 or 3 dailies worth of gold seems like a fair trade. He also now drops a 20 slot bag, called the Pit Lord's Satchel, which is BoP, but not unique. Like all 25-man bosses in 2.4, he will drop Badges of Justice. Finally, he also drops a Black Sack of Gems that will contain various Epic quality gems.

I'm sure if you were in the raid game pre-BC like I was, the same question is coming to mind: Is Magtheridon the new Onyxia for 2.4? Like 2.4's Magtheridon, she drops a really nice bag and a good amount of gold every kill. Like Magtheridon, her head can be turned in for a pretty sweet buff. Too bad Magtheridon's buff isn't quite as awesome, but it's all still there. Right now, Magtheridon is ignored or quickly skipped over by many raid groups, with only a kill or two just to get people their titles. But with these adjustments, both in difficulty and amount of loot dropped, he does seem like he may start looking a lot more alluring.

What do you think? Will these changes have you LF24M Magtheridon on a regular basis?

Upper Deck interviews TCG artists Zoltan and Gabor

Upper Deck continues their series on the art of the game by talking to two artists who've done some terrific work for the TCG, Zoltan Boros and Gabor Szikszai. The two partners talk about how they make some of the art of the card game (with a Wacom Cintiq-- drool), and specifically how they made a couple of multi-card pieces. For the most recent raid deck, they had to make a mural of Magtheridon and his channelers that went across five cards, and that the challenge wasn't just creating an interesting piece of art overall, but also making each card interesting enough to stand on its own.

Very cool interview, and definitely neat to see what these two guys are like, working on the forefront of digital painting.

Guildwatch: Down for the count

Tons of guild activity going on-- I don't know what it is, but you guilds are downing tons of bosses out there lately. I've never seen the tipbox filled so full, and this column takes longer and longer to put together every week. I think it's great-- Blizzard made this bosses to be killed, right? Even bubble butt here.

This week's GW, complete with not only downed news, but also drama and recruiting notices, starts right after you click the link below.

Guildwatch: Too much holiday cheer

Well, our Christmas wishes haven't come true so far-- the drama we've seen in 2008 has so far been pretty undramatic. But hey, there's still 364 days left, and that leaves a lot of time for ninjas, guildleader meltdowns, and drama bombs, so we'll be patient and see what comes.

And if you see it before we do, be sure to tip off GW about it-- send an email with drama, downed, or recruiting news to The very first GW of 2008 starts right after the jump.

Around Azeroth: Meet Magtheridon

Kokofheals of The Condemned on Smolderthorn sends in this shot of Magtheridon -- looking terribly imposing looming above a single Blood Elf. Kokofheals explains the shot thusly:

Sometimes I get that "photographer" itch, and disable my UI to try and make my player look more sophisticated than a pile of polygons. In this particular case I took a picture of how I felt at the moment, overwhelmed.

Do you stop to snap a screenshot at? We want to hear your stories (and see them!) on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!

Guildwatch: Holiday wishes

Dear Greatfather Winter: Next year, we here at Guildwatch would like a year overflowing with drama. May all the high progression guilds break up under their own weight, may people take virtual loots way too seriously, and may each and every guildleader think they're the king of the world just because they got a bunch of virtual avatars to click the "Accept" button instead of the other one. We can't think of anything better than a year full of ninjas, drama, and guild breakups to fill this column with.

Oh, and all the children of the world to join hands in a spirit of harmony and peace. You know, that crap about the kids.

For this week's dosage of drama, downed news, and recruiting notices, click the link below. GW will be off next week for the Christmas holiday, but we'll be back in two weeks, so send us your tips right now!

Raid Rx: Transitioning to 25-man raiding

Raid Rx is designed to encapsulate and cure the shock and horror that is 25-man raid healing. Ok, so it's mostly horror... Anyways, if you're a big fan of X-TREME Whack-A-Mole (or are being forced into it against your will) this is the column for you.

More often than not, when your guild is about to work on a new boss, everyone reads the same strat covering the same information. There are handy diagrams, complete with colored ovals for where the masses are to stand, run, or more often, die. If you're lucky, you'll get a paragraph at the end that says something like "Healers: Keep the raid alive. Watch for spike damage on the tanks." Not always useful...

My goal with this column is to explore what it is to be part of a 25-man raid healing team and tips to be successful at it. Much of what I'll cover will be from a healing lead's perspective, but the more everyone knows about the healing big picture, the better. I'm going to discuss what I have found through experience, so if you have Illidan questions, please give me couple of months (or more, silly holidays!) and I'll get back to you.

Transitioning to 25-Man Raiding
Being my first post, I figured the best place to start is at the beginning. You have finished off most if not all of Karahzan. ZA looks cool, but you're just not that into trolls or wooden armor. (If you've already beaten it, +50DKP!) Plus, at least 24 other people you know are chomping at the bit to down them some High King Maulgar. So what do you need to do to make that happen? Here are some basics to get you started:

Guildwatch: Worth every wipe

Week after week, you crash your head up against the wall on a certain boss. It takes time for people to show up for raids, and it takes even more time for people to release, come back, and rez after a wipe. Repair bills go up, raid attendance goes down, tempers flare, guild chat becomes awkward, and GMotD's get harsher and harsher. And then, one day, it all fits. That pull goes perfectly, everyone hits their marks ahead of time, and before long, you're looking at a dead boss and a window full of loot. "Worth every wipe"? It doesn't seem like it some times, but it is.

This week's GW starts right after the jump. Be sure to send your downed, drama, and recruiting tips to!

Guildwatch: Inspiring action in all the wrong places

Pretty amazing Kael down seen above-- the server was going offline, and as you can see, with just a scant 15 seconds left, Reforged on Runetotem was able to grab all their loot. Whew!

Right after the jump, you'll find this week's Guildwatch, your weekly look at all the drama, downed, and recruiting news you send us. The email address is send us your tips there (anonymous or otherwise), and see them here next week. Click the link to read on.

Guildwatch: You can't trick people into gquit anymore

Or can you? The picture above comes from the terrific Wowbash, which has screengrabs of some hilarious guild chats. The one thing they don't have, however, is some crazy, off-the-wall drama arguments-- who's collecting screengrabs of those nowadays? Anyone seen any good ones?

This week's Guildwatch, which has not only your drama feed for the week (we've got a famous guild disbanding this week), but also downed and recruiting news from around the realms. One Boss Leaves: Princess Huhuran vs. Magtheridon

This round of Two Bosses Enter may be over -- but another is starting soon. As you may have guessed from the graphic above, Princess Huhuran wiped the floor with Magtheridon. Commenters cited Huhuran's poison and 30% Berserk abilities as the tipping factor in this fight. (For those of you who've never participated in the Huhuran fight, a Berserk at 30% might not sound like a big deal -- but trust me, Huhuran's Berserk trumps all similar abilities you may be familiar with.) For current standings in our ultimate turnement of bosses, check the brackets on WoWWiki. Otherwise, check back with us later tonight for the next round of Two Bosses Enter!

Guildwatch: The most important thing

Guild drama is a lot like falling in love. It's the most cliche thing in the world-- everyone's been through it before, usually more than once. But when it happens to you, it seems like there's nothing more important. When you're the one cursing out your guildleader on Vent for giving the loot to his friend instead of the person who rolled 100 on it (you), you feel like you're the only person this has ever happened to in this way.

And that's why I love writing Guildwatch, your weekly look at drama, downed, and recruiting news from around the realms. We can't cover everything, but we can absolutely cover everything you send to us-- tips go to Hit the link below to see who fell not in love, but out of their guild this week.

Guildwatch: Wish you were here

I like it when people spend a little time to gussy up their guild's raiding pictures. A good, detailed guild kill picture (like the one from Order of the Raven on Aggramar above), is like a nice little postcard, a souvenir for everyone on the raid. If your guild has a particularly nice or well designed kill shot, send it to (along with your drama, downed, and recruiting tips as always) and we might have a whole gallery of them to show off next week.

In the meantime, click the link below to get your weekly dose of drama, downed, and recruiting news. It's all the guild action you'd want, without ever signing a charter!

Guildwatch: The drama trifecta

I never, ever thought this would happen, but apparently people are actually trying to be the biggest Guildwatch drama story now. Someone emailed a tip in hoping that his drama would be highlighted here on the front page, and unfortunately, while his tip was good (a massive PvP battle after a forum flame war), it just didn't match up to this mega ninja/ gquit/ game quit from Barthilas. But better luck next week, drama queens!

This week's GW starts right after you click the link below. And don't forget: the place to send all your info about drama, downings, or recruiting notices is Onward!

Guildwatch: An honest mistake

Sometimes you just mess up, you know? In today's GW, a guy gets to go on a trial run with a Black Temple-bound guild, and after seeing the amazing sight of Kael'thas being dropped for the first time, gets a little confused during the looting. Happens to the best of us, really.

To get your own guild news here (or share with us some juicy drama that you've heard about), send a tip to every time you drop a tip to us, a level 40 gets their mount. To read this week's GW, click the link below.
