Celebrating the New Year in World of Warcraft

We're sure you already have New Year's Eve plans, but if you plan to use the holiday to catch up on some WoW time, you should definitely check out the fireworks displays in the skies over Azeroth that are happening hourly. To find the celebrations, head to the nearest major city -- and look for a crowd revelers standing around tables of holiday booze to help ring in the New Year. And if you're planning to celebrate in Booty Bay, take care -- the guards may be taking the holiday off.

For those of you who haven't finished Winter Veil achievements, you still have until Thursday morning to get them wrapped up -- so don't get too caught up in holiday cheer that you can't make time to stomp on the Greench. And as always, have a fun and happy New Year!

Arcane Brilliance: New Year's resolutions for mages

winter veil
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Arcane Brilliance for arcane, fire and frost mages. This week, we leave 2011 behind and look toward 2012, which I predict will be the magiest year ever!

A new year is upon us, my wizardly cohorts. It is a time for reflection, a refractory period when we bask in the afterglow of the year that was and then take a quick shower to rinse off the stink of it. But most importantly, it's a time to look forward, to set new goals, to examine ourselves and determine how best to progress, to improve, and to somehow avoid ending the world in a fiery apocalypse that only John Cusack can save us from.

In that spirit, I thought this eve of the new year might be a good time to take an honest look at the mage class, examine our weak points, and conjure up some ways to shore them up in 2012. I figure we still have a at least a few months before Armageddon, and I can think of no better way to spend those last few moments of our existence than by killing as many warlocks as possible.

I'll do a full column on gearing up in 4.3 in the coming weeks, but for the time being, suffice it to say there is some phat, epic mage loot out there right now, and all you need to do is take it. Preferably from a warlock's smoking corpse, but we'll take it however it comes. We're at the point now in this expansion where the epics are flowing with almost ridiculous ease. If you've been waiting to level a mage, it has never been easier to get that mage fully kitted out in purples than it is right now. And if, for some reason, you've been neglecting your mage, now is the time to get him up to speed.

Breakfast Topic: What was your favorite WoW moment of 2011?

Happy New Year's Eve, everyone! It's almost time to throw your old 2011 Justin Bieber calendar in the trash and hang your new 2012 Justin Bieber calendar.

No doubt, 2011 has been a heck of a year so far -- we were introduced to Mists of Pandaria, we killed Deathwing with 24 complete and total strangers, we BlizzConned, and we visited parallel universes. There's been a lot of really awesome stuff going down, and at WoW Insider, we've been in a reminiscing mood.

But don't let us have all the fun. We want to know what your favorite World of Warcraft moment was this past year. Was it the time your guild finally downed heroic Ragnaros? Was it the time you scored that Cho'gall kill with only one person left standing? The moment you hit the 999,999 gold cap? Or was it something more personal -- say, that moment your boyfriend shared news of your wedding proposal via a popular World of Warcraft website?

How to deal with holiday raiding

Raiding during big holidays can be a bit of a sore spot for many guild masters, raiders, and other members of your raiding guild. When large content patches like Hour of Twilight come out so close to Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's, and every other holiday I missed that happens in the winter, schedules can get tight and tensions can flare up. The guild leader and a handful of raiders want to push progression, while another contingent of raiders doesn't want to rush home after family gatherings. Many players won't be available at all.

Whether you're a 10- or 25-man raid team, the holidays can put a dent in your progression and the willingness of raiders to put in those extra few hours or cut their raiding time close to family time. Here are a few tips and suggestions for dealing with holiday raiding and guild members who just don't have the fire during the coldest months. Don't let the holidays break up a good thing.

Be accommodating. Guilds and guild leaders need to be accommodating to players during the holidays. Many WoW players are college kids or younger and usually don't have a say where they are going for the holidays, what they are doing with their families, or what their schedules are going to be. If you're a guild that requires sign-outs or sign-ups for raids, make sure that people know early to post their holiday schedules or make it known when they won't be around.

Breakfast Topic: Happy New Year! What are your 2010 resolutions?

Happy New Year everyone! 2009 is behind us and we now have 2010 to look forward to. This year, we'll be anticipating Cataclysm to come out (but after we take down Arthas). Speaking of goals, were you able to fulfill the personal achievements you set out in 2009? Maybe it was to go after the Violet Proto-Drake. Or it could've been to join a raiding guild and see end game content. Perhaps it was to kill Arthas (which none of us have done yet, to be fair).

For myself, I set out a goal to exceed 7000 achievement points. I managed to score about 7400.

Oh, another important resolution? I'm still playing the game and having fun on my priest! I didn't think I had it in me to go another year but I did! I still have that Inner Fire burning within me, I suppose.

Here's my list of resolutions for 2010:
  • Take down Arthas (on Heroic difficulty)
  • Get the Loremaster achievement
  • Earn (and hold onto) more than 10000 gold
  • Finish getting my druid to 80
  • Start a pure DPS class and at least get it to 40 (Mage? Warlock?)
What about you? What do you resolve to do in 2010?

Lichborne: 2009 in review for death knights

Welcome to Lichborne, where Daniel Whitcomb has decided that Boom Boom Pow is our class anthem for the new year, if only because those chickens are totally jackin' our style.

So here we are, at the end of 2009. This marks the first full year of the Death Knight class, and it's definitely been an eventful year as Blizzard's balanced and rebalanced our class to help us fit into the ranks of the more established classes. We've been called flavor of the month and overpowered. I dislike the former label on philosophical grounds but grudgingly admit that the latter label has probably been correctly applied at certain points in time. Still, overall we've definitely had the ride of our lives over the last year as the devs have worked on a patch by patch basis to get us all figured out and settled in. Lets look at each tree and look back at the highlights and lowlights.

Scattered Shots: New Year's Resolutions for Hunters and for Blizzard

Welcome to Scattered Shots! This week, your author has managed to take a break from lamenting that the stores about to stop selling eggnog to make a few Hunter-specific resolutions.

The New Year is considered by many people to be the time for a fresh start, a time to wipe the slate clean of past missteps, or just to make some changes to your life to make it even better. In that spirit, I'd like to propose some Hunter-related resolutions for both Blizzard and for Hunters in the spirit of promoting peace, harmony, and understanding in the new year for all Survivalists, Marksmen, and Beastmasters.

Breakfast Topic: New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year, everyone! It's 2009, and this marks our first post of the year! I specifically locked everyone else out of the WoW Insider HQ so I would have the honor of writing it. Not before I asked them an important question, though. What were their New Year's resolutions for 2009? No, no, not those boring resolutions like "don't drink soda" or "watch less TV" or "stop eating babies." Nobody cares about that stuff. I mean their WoW resolutions!

My resolution? Get better at PvP. I'm shooting high and want an arena title. I've never really been into PvP, whether it be battlegrounds or arenas, but it's really the one area of play I haven't had much success in. So I'm gonna give it my all, and I'm not going to do things halfway. I'll settle for nothing less than Gladiator. Okay, okay, I'll accept Duelist, but that's as low as this fella goes.

As for the rest of our team...

Gamers on the Street: This year, I resolve ...

Gamers on the Street logs into U.S. servers to get the word from the front on what's going on in and around the World of Warcraft.

With Wrath of the Lich King already blipping away on many guilds' radars, a lot of players are plotting their way through existing content (or figuring out how to get into it in the first place and then pick their way through what they feasibly can) before the new content hits. Back in town on a peaceful early morning, you'll find players with a broad view of the things they want to accomplish in the weeks and months ahead – New Year's resolutions for a very Warcraft year.

Gamers on the Street popped into Ironforge on the Warsong server early one frosty, cold morning this week to see what the early birds were planning for 2008. Their ideas, after the break.

Celebrating the new year with a GM

A guildmate drew my attention to this interesting video of the New Year celebrations outside of Ironforge on the US Proudmoore server. Apparently, a GM appeared as a fire-spewing gnome and had some fun with the players gathered to see the fireworks. Check out the video above to get a complete look at his antics.

Breakfast Topic: Resolutions

Veronica Belmont recently thought of some New Year's resolutions she felt would be firmly within reach. (If you remember, she was the lovely lady who interviewed Leeroy Jenkins at Blizzcon). Number 2 on her list was to reach level 70 in WoW. Have you made any New Year's resolutions related to WoW? Or are resolutions a "strictly real-life" sort of thing to you?

WoW Insider Show Episode 18: New Year's resolutions

Dan O'Halloran, Turpster, and I all sat down for the 18th episode of the WoW Insider Show (and we got circular for the end of the year, since we had the same cast on the very first show), and it is now available for listening over on WoW Radio's website. We chatted about:
We also talked about our suggested battle cries for the Alliance (my favorite is still "Grab Your Sword and Fight the Horde," and finally someone made a Tshirt for me-- thanks, Arek!-- but we found a lot of support for "You No Take Candle!" so I guess it's up to the Alliance what they like best). And we shared our New Year's resolutions for 2008-- Turpster's resolution is 1680x1050 (funny guy), Dan resolved to try some PvP, I resolved to play my good old Night Elf Hunter more, and see if I can't have a look at some high level content from the Alliance side.

Definitely check out the show if you're bored while off work tomorrow, and don't forget-- we do this show live on WoW Radio every Saturday afternoon, so be sure to listen in again this coming Saturday at 3:30pm EST.

WoW Moviewatch: Dirt Dogs New Years

Still high on the success of Songs for Dogs, Barenger and Mirabell have created a New Years greeting for their guild, Dirt Dog! This time, they reminisce about dungeons that no one runs anymore. "For Old Alt's Sake" is an entertaining take on "Auld Lang Syne," a New Years Eve tradition.

These guys are quite talented and have an amazing rapport. It doesn't look scripted at all. Hopefully they'll enter WoW Idol 2008. Happy New Years, WoW Insiders!

WoW, Casually: December 28 to January 3, New Year's, WSG, etc.

Each week, Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player who has 2 hours or less to play at a time.

I hope everyone's holidays have been relatively drama-free and that you are enjoying some downtime before the new year.

Speaking of New Year's, along with the continuation of the Feast of Winter Veil, Blizzard is hosting New Year's festivities on December 31st and January 1st. There will be fireworks, booze and revelers to blow kisses at right along side the remains of the Winter Veil activities.

Have you picked up your presents yet? The trees in Ironforge and Orgrimmar have gifts with exclamation points over them for you to take and open. They range from meh to awesome and some are even BOU for your reselling profits if you aren't into keeping the fun stuff. I was hoping to find a Dragon Kite, but that was before I discovered that it is from the TCG and not something from Greatfather Winter. Dragons are cool.
