WoW Moviewatch: The Frostwolf

If you can't wait for Warlords of Draenor, this machinima from Nixxiom may be the next best thing. It takes inspiration from some of the amazing scenes and settings we find in Draenor to tell the story of a young orc -- but not just any young orc -- being brought before the shaman of his tribe. And though this isn't an in-game event or cutscene, it fits so neatly into the experience of Frostfire Ridge that it feels like it could be a flashback.

Honestly, I'd pit this against the official cinematic: though the animation isn't nearly as slick, it packs a great emotional punch... and it focuses on the good things about World of Warcraft rather than the start of yet another war.

WoW Moviewatch: The Warlock -- Barrens Chat

There's no better way than to reminisce about the days of old than dragging The Warlock through very pit of despair known as Barrens Chat. Created by none other than Nixxiom, this episode has all the laughs, crass humor, and digs at our own gamer culture that you could ever hope to see.

The video struck a nostalgic point for me. Remember the days of infinite Chuck Norris jokes? These days, trying to crack a line about the Bearded One is no more hip than strutting down the mall in your Jams. Though, I suppose both could be saved by a hefty dose of irony. But still, let's hear it for Barrens Chat. It's an age gone by that no amount of pandering or cataclysming will ever truly bring back.

WoW Moviewatch: Where are they now? Darion Mograine

As you've been busily stomping on sha and bringing down vile red despots, have you ever stopped to wonder: where are the death knights in all this? Sure, plenty of player death knights are on the raid, collecting boar livers, and doing dailies. But what's the big NPC folks been doing? Not for nothing, but Mograine might have been helpful in that final epic battle.

Mooclucking and Nixxiom tackle this troubling absence in Where are they now? Darion Mograine. When they went looking into the missing leader, nothing could have prepared them for what they found. The shocking answer will surprise you.

WoW Moviewatch: The Second Cataclysm!

Work Warning: There's some mild cursing in here, but nothing terribly crazy.

Nixxiom Machinima over on Youtube is known primarily for films that border on the absurdly bizarre -- they're weird as all get out, but they leave you laughing from the sheer weird flavor of it all. The Second Cataclysm is no exception to this, offering an odd little story of inexplicable ... well, you'll just have to watch it and see. An Azeroth-themed riff on an old Klay World cartoon titled Glass of Water, Second Cataclysm delivers all the absurdity of the original with Azeroth characters playing the parts. The soundtrack adds a nice touch, the film itself is well done, and the good-natured poking at Varian Wrynn, as well as an unexpected and brief Thrall cameo, were more than enough to keep me laughing.

WoW Moviewatch: Family

Some stories are simple and beautiful enough that they barely need words. Told with a laconic, thoughtful pace, Family relates the heartwarming love of an unlikely adoption. You don't see many machinima like this. Not only is the animation pleasing and convincing (even if baby elves are a little creepy), but the entire piece is told with so much soul and reality that you almost wonder if something in real life inspired it.

As Nixxiom said when he suggested this movie, this is a video that hits you "right in the feels." It's an incredibly well done piece, and probably one of the best I've ever seen.

WoW Moviewatch: The Spirit of Winter's Veil

Nixxiom and Moocluck challenged one another to a season-off, with each machinimator creating a special holiday video. In this one, Nixxiom tries to educate Moocluck about the true meaning of Winter's Veil. And while Moocluck struggles with understanding The Spirit of Winter's Veil, we do get the opportunity to see Grandather Winter cruise along in the finest sleigh imaginable. We now know why you shouldn't leave brandy out for Santa, but the image of that sleigh will stick in my head for the rest of my life.

WoW Moviewatch: The Madness of Winters Veil

For a very special holiday gift, Nixxiom and Moocluck challenged one another to a machinima-off to create the best seasonal video. In Nixxiom's creation, two bad guys try to take advantage of The Madness of Winters Veil to get what they really want under the tree. Of course, things don't turn out for the pair, and they're forced to burst into song. This is probably the best use of "suffering" I've ever heard in lyrics!

WoW Moviewatch: The Culling of Arthas

When Nixxiom and Mooclucking tackle The Culling of Arthas, you can bet you're in for a good time. Of course, my mere Arthas can't possible do full Arthas to this Arthas, so I'd invite you to read their words about the video:

Hello, Arthas. It's been a long Arthas but at last I'm here with a brand new Arthas! I've been busy a lot with Arthas lately so I've been preoccupied with writing Arthas', making Arthas projects, and preparing for my Arthas finals. Nonetheless, that doesn't mean I have forgotten Arthas! So here is a short Arthas for your viewing Arthas. Hope you all enjoy Arthas!

So, I hope you Arthas this video and take the time to leave Arthas some feedback.

WoW Moviewatch: The Day of the Cataclysm

And now for something a little different. Nixxiom and MozQ sheds an alternative light on The Day of the Cataclysm, highlighting the various moments and scenes of horror as Deathwing ran roughshod over Stormwind. Or statue building. You know, whichever is appropriate.

Remember, statues are not effective against dragons. Make sure to watch all the way through.

WoW Moviewatch: Under the Sea

Not every Nixxiom video includes explosions, destruction, and rage. In this charming video about a little crab in a big sea, we get to see a whole other side of Nixxiom. This is an incredibly cute little tale. If you only watch one video this week, I'd probably have to say this is the one to watch. Adorable, fun, and quick-to-the-point, Under the Sea proves why Nixxiom is one of the masters.

WoW Moviewatch: Revenge (Act 2)

In Revenge (Act 2), we get a little more insight to why Nixxiom has launched his crusade against Arthas. We also get the hint that Nixxiom's pals might have somehow been involved in betrayal.

This video is technically a preview. But it clocks in at 10 minutes and has a more fully developed plot than many full machinimas I've seen. My hat's off to Nixxiom and Silverlined Productions for this.

Revenge (Act 2) is a very moody piece, featuring a lot of good old-fashioned brooding angst time. Considering the events in the main character's life, that's pretty justified. However, now that the story has been built up and framed, it should be exciting to see the action in the next release.

WoW Moviewatch: Not All Roleplay is Serious - Episode 3: 1N 3D

Nixxiom and Erunno have a series of hilarious shorts called Not All Roleplay is Serious. They're pretty awesome, and you can usually find them over at Myndflame. One of my favorites, though, is Not All Roleplay is Serious - Episode 3: 1N 3D. It's a very short video, clocking in at a minute and ten seconds.

I've missed out on most of the 3D craze hitting mainstream movies. The glasses just give me a horrible headache. So while all of you folks are out rocking to Avatar in eye-popping 3D, I wait for it come out in DVD. So I was totally cheering for Nixxiom and Erunno when the deer paused, looked to the screen, and told us to pop on our glasses now. (This does mean I don't know if that 3D method worked.)

Keep an eye out for further NARIS episodes. It's great stuff, and Nixxiom and Erunno are two of the best machinimators out there. You can't go wrong.

WoW Moviewatch: Revenge (Act 2)

Silverlined Productions has released the trailer for Revenge (Act 2). This is the follow up to the first piece of roleplay inspired work, called Revenge. In Act 2, Nixxiom is finally getting his chance to show down against the Lich King. That's pretty appropriate, when you consider the likely proximity of patch 3.3.

Interestingly, in the Myndflame post about the video, the author is pre-emptively defending his work against accusations of "god mode." That's a roleplay term in which the player considers their character so awesome, they win every encounter, and possess every virtue. Generally, in machinima and fan fiction, that dynamic is called "Mary Sue."

I'm not sure the trailer itself provides any defense against accusations of Nixxiom being a Mary Sue. You can't really make that call until you see the final movie. However, since it is a roleplay thing, and roleplay tends to be an escapist art, I think it's fair game to do a little idealization of the character. In the end, it really all comes down to how well the author can tell a story. Here's hoping the final film does the confrontation justice.

WoW Moviewatch: Two Fellas

Warning: Spoilers about this movie appear in the review.

Like almost everyone else who is regularly featured in WoW Moviewatch, Silverlined Productions are busily grinding away on their movie presentation for BlizzCon. However, Nixxiom took a break from that effort, and threw together Two Fellas to keep us entertained during the interim.

As the video itself warns, Nixxiom didn't spend an inordinate amount of time building the video. It's interesting to note, though, he said it took three hours on the long end. That's a good point for folks who are new to machinima. This brief, short clip took three hours. It's important to keep that in mind when evaluating how much effort machinima authors spend creating their work.

The story is pretty short. A pair of humans are chilling out in Lakeshire, talking about how a pretty good movie was spoiled at the end by some randomness that didn't make any sense. Then a nun appears, who turns into a worgen. And then, randomness occurs. The final line of the movie is something like "I'm gonna rape you."

I found the bit pretty funny and enjoyed the movie. But the politically aware person wonders about that final line. Since the whole point is "this is random and crazy," I don't imagine there's any harm meant. After all, a common PvP phrase is "I'm gonna own you!" You're not really referencing slavery with that phrase, and Nixxiom wasn't trying to make light of rape as a subject. It was just a phrase. Still, it stuck out in my head, and I thought I'd mention it.

Overall, this video was actually a lot of fun, and I totally tip my hat to Nixxion. Thanks for the taking the time to put something out there, even while working hard on your BlizzCon efforts.
