WoW Moviewatch: Revenge (Act 2)

In Revenge (Act 2), we get a little more insight to why Nixxiom has launched his crusade against Arthas. We also get the hint that Nixxiom's pals might have somehow been involved in betrayal.

This video is technically a preview. But it clocks in at 10 minutes and has a more fully developed plot than many full machinimas I've seen. My hat's off to Nixxiom and Silverlined Productions for this.

Revenge (Act 2) is a very moody piece, featuring a lot of good old-fashioned brooding angst time. Considering the events in the main character's life, that's pretty justified. However, now that the story has been built up and framed, it should be exciting to see the action in the next release.

WoW Moviewatch: Not All Roleplay is Serious - Episode 3: 1N 3D

Nixxiom and Erunno have a series of hilarious shorts called Not All Roleplay is Serious. They're pretty awesome, and you can usually find them over at Myndflame. One of my favorites, though, is Not All Roleplay is Serious - Episode 3: 1N 3D. It's a very short video, clocking in at a minute and ten seconds.

I've missed out on most of the 3D craze hitting mainstream movies. The glasses just give me a horrible headache. So while all of you folks are out rocking to Avatar in eye-popping 3D, I wait for it come out in DVD. So I was totally cheering for Nixxiom and Erunno when the deer paused, looked to the screen, and told us to pop on our glasses now. (This does mean I don't know if that 3D method worked.)

Keep an eye out for further NARIS episodes. It's great stuff, and Nixxiom and Erunno are two of the best machinimators out there. You can't go wrong.

WoW Moviewatch: Revenge (Act 2)

Silverlined Productions has released the trailer for Revenge (Act 2). This is the follow up to the first piece of roleplay inspired work, called Revenge. In Act 2, Nixxiom is finally getting his chance to show down against the Lich King. That's pretty appropriate, when you consider the likely proximity of patch 3.3.

Interestingly, in the Myndflame post about the video, the author is pre-emptively defending his work against accusations of "god mode." That's a roleplay term in which the player considers their character so awesome, they win every encounter, and possess every virtue. Generally, in machinima and fan fiction, that dynamic is called "Mary Sue."

I'm not sure the trailer itself provides any defense against accusations of Nixxiom being a Mary Sue. You can't really make that call until you see the final movie. However, since it is a roleplay thing, and roleplay tends to be an escapist art, I think it's fair game to do a little idealization of the character. In the end, it really all comes down to how well the author can tell a story. Here's hoping the final film does the confrontation justice.

WoW Moviewatch: Two Fellas

Warning: Spoilers about this movie appear in the review.

Like almost everyone else who is regularly featured in WoW Moviewatch, Silverlined Productions are busily grinding away on their movie presentation for BlizzCon. However, Nixxiom took a break from that effort, and threw together Two Fellas to keep us entertained during the interim.

As the video itself warns, Nixxiom didn't spend an inordinate amount of time building the video. It's interesting to note, though, he said it took three hours on the long end. That's a good point for folks who are new to machinima. This brief, short clip took three hours. It's important to keep that in mind when evaluating how much effort machinima authors spend creating their work.

The story is pretty short. A pair of humans are chilling out in Lakeshire, talking about how a pretty good movie was spoiled at the end by some randomness that didn't make any sense. Then a nun appears, who turns into a worgen. And then, randomness occurs. The final line of the movie is something like "I'm gonna rape you."

I found the bit pretty funny and enjoyed the movie. But the politically aware person wonders about that final line. Since the whole point is "this is random and crazy," I don't imagine there's any harm meant. After all, a common PvP phrase is "I'm gonna own you!" You're not really referencing slavery with that phrase, and Nixxiom wasn't trying to make light of rape as a subject. It was just a phrase. Still, it stuck out in my head, and I thought I'd mention it.

Overall, this video was actually a lot of fun, and I totally tip my hat to Nixxion. Thanks for the taking the time to put something out there, even while working hard on your BlizzCon efforts.
