WRUP: Someone should make a Warcraft movie MMO

So there's this Warcraft movie that's getting made? And they showed off the logo and some props from it this week, and there's apparently going to be a big panel at SDCC where Legendary Pictures may or may not reveal some details about the movie. And so now I'm thinking about it, and I think we totally should make an MMO based on this Warcraft property, if the movie does well enough.

So this week, in addition to asking about what our friends are playing, I asked what they thought about this Warcraft movie and if it would make a good MMO.

WRUP: And now, our feature presentation

This week saw a release date announcement for Curse of Naxxramas, the first adventure pack for Hearthstone. Release dates are fine and all that, but in more relevant WoW news, this week also saw the launch of a brand new beta build that opened up four new levels to obtain, two new PvE zones worth of quests, two model revamps, one PvP island, a mysterious portal, and a whole mess of new places to explore.

Sure, we already have a list of things to expect from Warlords, and a list of features we'll be seeing in the new expansion. But this week, in addition to asking everyone what they are playing this weekend, we decided to ask what one feature they'd like to see added to Warlords. How about you guys -- and what are you playing?

Alex Ziebart (@AlexZiebart) This weekend I'm taking it easy for the most part and spending time outside. When I am playing something, I'll be on the Warlords beta checking out Talador. As for new features? Real player housing is still something I really want after seeing it in action in Wildstar -- the amount of creativity some players pour into their lots is incredible. Though I'd accept a Karabor comeback as an alternative.

WRUP: A lonely time of playing

This week was a complex mix of big news and no news. Weeks like this are weird. Your intrepid WoW Insider staff assembles itself, ready to lay down the big news smackdown... and then nothing else comes to light. It's a weird mix of hurry-up-and-wait and "Oh, please, let something happen."

But the reality is that WoD approaches closer with every day. While there's obviously no release date yet, we're getting lots of information from the beta. So when we asked the WoW Insider staff what they're playing this weekend, we also asked them to opine on the state of the beta. Are we looking forward to the expansion as a whole new playground, or are we feeling like the not-time-travel expansion is perhaps a bit lackluster?

WRUP: How's that honeymoon doing?

WRUP How's that honeymoon doing
It's always a little funny when new patches come out. You start off just loving it... new stuff, new challenges. But then you get bored and start hating life. So, how about you guys? Is the honeymoon over?

Join our staff by telling us how you feel about the new patch in the comments. And, of course, read on in What Are You Playing to see what we're doing this weekend!

Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey) I'll hopefully be spending the weekend on my new server. If not, then I'll be spending the weekend not really logging into WoW aside for dailies. As for 5.2 -- I love the patch, I love the content, I haven't really gotten bored with anything yet. However, the re-structuring and subsequent splintering of my guild has put a bit of sadness over the whole thing. On the other hand, the Isle of Thunder is tremendously entertaining, and every time I see a tree or structure struck by lightning I stand there marveling and hoping it will happen again because it looks really, really pretty.

Are the forums necessary?

Here's something I'd like to hear all your thoughts on. Glue from Nagrand quotes the fact that "only a small portion of the playerbase read the forums," and he claims that those people are the most important players Blizzard has-- they care enough about the game to visit the forums and voice their opinions. But I'd like to play the devil's advocate on this one. What if (and stay with me here) Blizzard deleted the official forums completely?

Do we really need the official forums? They do help-- besides giving us all kinds of fun reads and, yes, occasional insight, they're the main link between the CMs and the player base-- patch announcements and upcoming changes all are made known mostly through the forums, and day-to-day player feedback and questions are centered there. But they don't have to be-- Mythic's Dark Age of Camelot actually runs a daily blog featuring community news and game updates and changes. And it would be just as easy for Blizzard to announce things on their own website, and get player feedback and questions from sites just like this one.

And getting rid of the forums would wipe out all of the lunacy that appears on there-- all the insensitive comments, the jeering and rickrolling, the flaming, the drama (well, actually I'm down for keeping that one), and all of the other wackiness that goes down there every day. If the CMs didn't have to deal with that stuff, wouldn't they be able to spend more time communicating player ideas to the devs? If Blizzard didn't have to pay Timbal to ban rickrollers, couldn't they use that money to come up with a new 5man, or Heroic Deadmines, or any number of other ideas they've had but couldn't carry out? If we lost the forums, wouldn't we have a better game?

Food for thought. It's highly unlikely (at the very least) that Blizzard would ever shut down the official forums. But, even though they may have been necessary in the beginning, WoW's community survives in many other places now. Are the forums really necessary?
